On The Inside

A to Z of PRISONER
We proudly present the definitive A to Z guide to our favourite Aussie prison drama! With suggestions from our own team as well as dedicated fans, we've got something for just about every letter of the alphabet.

If there's anything you'd like to add, just get in touch!

A is for...

August 4th 1978 - The day that production began on Prisoner.

Actors - Prisoner broke the mould with a mainly female cast of actors.

Ann Reynolds - Governor of the prison when Erica Davidson was replaced.

Australia - The home of Wentworth and it's inmates.

B is for...

Buy-up - A weekly opportunity for the inmates of Wentworth to purchase luxury goods such as cigarettes, biscuits and shampoo, from their prison earnings.

Barnhurst - A medium security prison based in the countryside. It was governed by former deputy governor of Wentworth Vera Bennett. Barnhurst was set on fire during a prison riot which resulted in the death of Bea Smith and the transfer of 8 prisoners to Wentworth.

Bash / Bashing - A severe assault or beating administered from one prisoner to another and on some occasions from an officer to a prisoner.

Bell - Sounded to tell prisoners it was either time to get up, go to work, have dinner, finish work and to go to bed.

C is for...

Cigarettes - According to reports, over 1,000,000 cigarettes were smoked by the cast during filming. That's a lot of nicotine!

Charge - Prisoners were placed 'on a charge' if they had broken a rule in front of an officer or other member of staff. Too many charges often resulted in loss of parole.

Channel 10 - One of the channels in Australia that Prisoner was first premiered on.

Caged Women - The name which Prisoner was known as when it was shown overseas on Canadian television.

Casting - Someone had to be responsible for finding the right actors to play the right characters. Maura Fay, Vicki Popplewell and Jan Russ were the main Casting Directors.

Cast and Crew - Prisoner boasted one of the largest combined cast and crew during the 7 years of which the series was made, with over 2000 people involved.

Cuventry - A place where naughty prisoners are sent for a few episodes, which includes being ignored, pushed past or having references made about them smelling bad etc - very similar to the English "Coventry", but with more denim and hairspray.

D is for...

Department - 'The Department' was reference to the Department of Corrective Services. Equally loathed by the prisoners and many of Wentworth's custodians alike.

Diversion - Created by the prisoners to occupy the screws while they get on with their illicit plans. In Margo Gaffney's logic, this means starting an uncontrollable fire that guts the entire prison.

Doctor - The person the inmates go to when they are feeling unwell. In Lizzie Birdsworth's case this was an easy rest from work or an excuse to steal some of the surgical spirit to assist with her alcohol addiction.

DVDs - The first set of Prisoner DVDs released in Australia sold to Gold status.

Doreen Anderson/Burns - One of the first characters to be featured in the series. She was often seen clutching her teddy bear wherever she went.

Diaries - Barbara Fields died whilst trying to recover Officer Joan Ferguson's personal diaries which she had written about her life as a prison officer - in an attempt to blackmail her with the other women.
