Episode Details

Karen and Greg run down the corridor and into Lynn's cell. Greg asks Meg to press hard on Lynn's wrist. He tells Meg that Lynn has cut superficial veins but has lost a lot of blood. An officer arrives to tell Greg that the ambulance has arrived and he instructs the officer to tell Mrs Davidson not to hold up the ambulance and to get Lynn's blood group.

The officer is in Erica's office as she on the phone, telling the gateguard to let the ambulance straight through to get Lynn Warner to hospital.

Officer Manson [CLICK HERE!] enters and tells Erica that the new arrivals have been checked in but one of them is asking to see her. Erica tells her that they will have to wait until the next day; Officer Manson tells Erica that she was adamant and Erica tells Officer Manson that even though she is new to the prison she should be able to deal with a routine matter like that. Erica opens the door and is greeted by a girl with the words "Hello Aunty Erica".

Barbara is waiting for Erica and is reprimanded by Miss Manson, a siren is heard and Erica walks back into her office telling Miss Manson to leave. Barbara asks what has happened and is told that it is no concern of hers. Erica tells her that she has got herself into a right mess and Barbara tells Erica that it was all a mistake. Erica tells Barbara that she wont be taken for a fool as she must have known exactly what she was doing as it is in her file. Erica cant understand why Barbara needed to commit a crime as she had a good education and doting parents who gave her everything she wanted. She tells Barbara not to expect the same treatment inside the prison. Barbara tells Erica that she knows that Erica doesn't like her and that it isn't her fault that none of the family will speak to her. Erica tells her that that is beside the point and that whilst she is in the prison she will be treated exactly the same as any other prisoner and advises Barbara not to tell anyone that she is her niece. When Barbara asks why she cant say anything Erica tells her that if she does the women will make it impossible for her throughout her stay to do anything. Barbara apologises to Erica and again tells her that she has made a mistake. She tells Barbara that being caught with 5kg of Mara was no mistake and tells her not to tell the women that she is her niece or why is in the prison as she will find their reaction hard to live with.

There is a knock at the door and Meg walks in, apologising for interrupting then tells Erica that Greg has called from the hospital and will call again when there is any news. Erica introduces the new prisoner and asks Meg to show her to her cell. Barbara leaves and Erica tells Meg to look after her as she is her niece and she would like that information to be known by as few people as possible.

Karen is cleaning Lynn's cell, Bea and Monica are talking to her. Bea thinks Lynn is a silly little fool as she was put in prison for months for no reason then gets a second chance and wastes it. Monica tells her that some people just cant handle it, Bea tells her that she should never have got involved with the bloke she did. Karen asks Bea what she would have expected after losing her child and her husband, Bea tells her that doing herself in isn't the answer, as Meg walks past with Barbara Davidson. She asks Karen why it is taking her so long to clean up and Barbara asks what has happened. Meg tells her that she will hear about it soon enough and then tells Bea and Monica to get out. They leave and Meg introduces Karen to Barbara and tells Karen that she wants her to look after Barbara whilst she settles in. Meg leaves and then Barbara asks what happened and Karen tells her that one of the girls tried to kill themselves. Barbara tells Karen that she will be in her room when she has finished.

Barbara walks into her cell and puts her things down on her bed when Bea and Monica walk in. Bea introduces them to Barbara and asks her what she is in for, she replies with 2 years and Monica asks if she has killed someone, telling Barbara that some people deserve it and Bea should know. Bea asks her if it was an accident, manslaughter and tells Barbara that there are no secrets in the prison. Barbara tells them that it was a mistake and Mrs Davidson is going to help her to get out. Bea and Monica joke about it and then Barbara tells them that Erica is her Aunt.

Meg is leaving the prison and Jean follows behind her. Jean asks her what's wrong and Meg tells her that Lynn Warner tried to kill herself by slashing her wrists. Jean asks if she is going to be alright and Meg hopes that she will be. Jean blames herself for not noticing the state that Lynn was in. Jean offers Meg a lift home and asks Jean to stay for dinner.

The women are in the rec room. Bea and Monica are watching TV, Karen is reading the newspaper, Barbara is sat at the table. Bea complains about the movie on TV and Monica tells her that it wouldn't be so bad if it was in colour, Bea tells her that it would be if Franky hadn't smashed the last one and that it was about time they replaced it. Bea and and Monica ask Barbara what she thinks and she thinks it would be nice to have a new TV set. Monica asks her to ask Erica and Bea tells her that there is no point having an Aunty for a Governor if she can't swing a few privileges for her friends. Barbara tells them that she will ask her. Bea and Monica sit next to her and Bea comments to Monica that it's good to have a friend like Barbara as she is someone who looks after her friends. Barbara tells them that she can't promise anything but Erica will listen to her as she is close to her and used to spoil her a lot when she used to stay with her and her uncle when she was a child. Monica comments that it must be really nice to have a close knit family. In the background Karen shakes her head.

Jean is at Meg's house drinking a glass of wine when Meg brings in some salad, telling Jean that the food wont be too long. Jean tells Meg that she still feels guilty about Lynn Warner as it's supposed to be her job to help people like Lynn, she tells Meg that she should never have got involved with Steve Wilson and Meg tells her that if it's anyone's fault the officers are to blame for not keeping a closer eye on Lynn and they couldn't as they were short staffed, especially with Vera being suspended. Jean asks about Vera and Meg tells her that she is a senior officer at the prison, when Jean realises that they have met Meg tells her that Vera isn't that bad, she is just misunderstood, even by Meg herself. There is a knock at the door and Meg tells Jean that that will be Doctor Miller as she asked him to call round to tell her how Lynn was getting on. She lets Greg in and then asks how Lynn is and Greg tells her that she is going to be okay but it will be a while before she is let out of hospital. Meg introduces Greg to Jean and asks him to stay for dinner. Meg goes into the kitchen and Greg asks if it was her who tried to get Steve Wilson (but he calls him Steve Miller!) to take on Lynn's case.

At the hospital, Lynn is dreaming and calling out for Doug.

In Bea's cell, Bea is making them a cup of coffee, Monica wonders what Barbara is in for, commenting that she doesn't look like the violent type, especially as she is the Governor's niece. Karen asks them what difference it would make and how they know that she actually is the governor's niece. Monica comments that her name is Davidson and Karen asks her how many Davidson's she thinks there are in Melbourne, not all of them being related. Monica asks Bea what she thinks and Bea tells them that she doesn't trust her, she doesn't think Barbara is as sweet and innocent as she makes out. Karen tells Bea to leave her alone and Bea tells Karen that she can't as there are certain women in the prison who might try and take advantage of Barbara when they find out that she is the governor's niece. Bea asks Karen how she is getting on with her lawyer friend and is told that he is a barrister. Bea asks some more about him and is told by Karen that it is none of her business. Monica tells Bea that she has got some bad habits and Bea gets out of bed and asks Karen if she can teach her some new manners. A gate is heard opening and they hide their coffee, get into bed and pretend to be asleep. An officer opens the cell window, looks in and then closes it again. Bea tells Karen not to get too big for her boots.

Meg, Greg and Jean have finished eating and are drinking more wine, Jean asks Greg how being a prison doctor compares with private practice and Greg tells her that it's not favourable as he deals with a long queue of hypochondriacs, wanting everything from aspirin to valium. Greg wonders why he is bothering at all and Jean agrees but then she goes on to say that every now and then there is a success story like Mum and that makes it all worth while. Meg clears the plates and Greg tells Jean that he is happy that things worked out for Mum. Jean agrees saying that prisoners have no real contact with the outside world and are completely alone in the world when they are released. Greg asks her what the answer is and Jean tells him that they need more work release programmes to have some contact with every day life. Greg doesn't think it will work. Jean asks him if he thinks they should just give up and he doesn't think that is the answer either, he goes on to tell Jean about Helen Masters as Meg sets the coffee down next to a picture of Bill, Meg and Marty.

Bea asks Karen if she is alright and then asks her if she is really going to appeal against her sentence, Karen tells her that she might and Bea then asks her why she kept quiet about what happened at her trial, Karen asks her what she means and then Bea goes on to tell Karen about her first trial, she told the judge that she had had an argument with that woman, saw red and bashed her and Karen works out that she didn't. Bea tells her that she had been thinking about doing it for weeks, since she had caught her carrying on with her husband. Karen then has flashbacks of her own crime and tells Bea that she killed her. Bea tells her that it was stupid and that she should have killed him instead. Karen then has a flashback of her husband in the shower, covered in blood. Monica gets in bed and goes to sleep. Karen asks Bea what happened. Bea tells her that she was at the beach as they used to go to the beach with Debbie every Sunday, she tells Karen that she caught him behind some sheds with a woman she used to work with, she starts crying, telling Karen that if it had been anywhere else it wouldn't have mattered as much but the beach was their special place, she was really close to Debbie and her father treated her alright but never spent much time with her, when Bea got put inside Debbie started to hang around with a bunch of weirdo's and that her husband never stopped her as he was too busy with his fancy women, she got hooked on drugs and couldn't stop, she used to visit Bea and ask for help and Bea tells Karen that she could do nothing being inside and that the screws wouldn't even let her go to Debbie's funeral. Monica starts snoring then Bea tells her to shut up and carries on crying.

The next morning Miss Manson is opening cell doors and comes to Barbara's, telling her to get up, as she opens her cell door. Bea and Monica appear and Barbara tells Miss Manson to leave her alone as it is far too early, Miss Manson tells Barbara that she will be in solitary if she doesn't move. Barbara tells her to leave her alone. Bea tells Miss Manson to leave her alone otherwise she will be for it, Miss Manson asks her what she is talking about and Monica tells her that Barbara is the Governor's niece and if she was to get upset Miss Manson would be in it up to her neck. Miss Manson leaves the cell and Bea and Monica laugh. Barbara asks if she has gone and Bea tells her that she has and that she was lucky it was a new screw and not Vera as she would have been hard to convince. Monica comments that now she has gone, things will be different and Bea tells her that with Barbara in and Vera out things are looking up. Meg appears and tells them to leave then tells Barbara to get up and get dressed as she is taking her to see the governor.

Meg leaves Barbara in Erica's office, who asks Meg to leave and Barbara to sit down. Erica tells Barbara that she has just been talking to Miss Manson who is an excellent officer with impeccable references, who has just recently joined them from Sydney and has told Erica that she would rather resign from the service than work for a Governor that allows special privileges for family members. Barbara explains that Bea and Monica told Miss Manson to leave her alone as she was the Governor's niece. Erica is furious that Barbara has told the women they are related and tells Barbara that while she is inside she will be treated like every other prisoner and that the officers have the authority to punish her like everyone else and that Erica will not stop them from doing so and if there is any more trouble she will be put straight into solitary. She tells Barbara to stay away from Bea and Monica and suggests that she washes her face and stays out of trouble. Barbara storms out telling Erica that she wont do as she is told as Erica doesn't care about her anyway.

The women are working in the laundry when Barbara walks in. Monica, Bea and Lizzie ask Barbara how things went with Aunty Erica; she tells them that Erica saw the funny side of what happened as she has a sense of humour. Bea isn't convinced. Barbara goes on to tell them that Erica wasn't happy about Miss Manson wanting to resign and tells Bea that she went too far. Bea tells her that she would know about it if she wanted to go to far. Bea asks her if she mentioned anyone else in her chat with Erica and Barbara tells her that she took full responsibility. Lizzie mentions getting rid of Vera and Barbara asks to know more about it when Bea steps in and tells Lizzie to shut up and then tells Barbara that she is still only new and will be told more when she's been in a bit longer. Lizzie carries on loading the dryer and Barbara walks over to her and convinces Lizzie to tell her what happened to Vera.

Steve Wilson is on the phone in his office, asking Mrs Campbell to come in and talk to him to give him information on Karen Travers when his secretary buzzes through, telling him that Jean Vernon has arrived to see him and he asks her to send Jean in. Steve finishes his conversation as Jean walks in.

Jean tells him that Lynn Warner has slashed her wrists and is in a bad way. Jean tells him that she thinks they are both to blame for what's happened and that it was probably his advice that made her do it as he didn't show any amount of care towards her. He tells her that he gave Lynn Warner the facts as he is running a legal practice, nothing more. Jean asks him why he didn't give her any hope. He tells her that he is very busy and she leaves.

Meg and Barbara are stood in front of Erica. Erica tells Meg that Barbara has told her that Vera didn't strike Monica and that Bea set the whole thing up. Meg tells her that she thought it happened like that and asks if Erica wants them brought it. Erica tells her that if she does that then they will know how they found out and Barbara won't be safe. Barbara thinks that, as Erica is her Aunty and the Governor, then she will be able to protect her. Erica tells her that the women don't like laggers and that they wont thank her for what she has done. Barbara is annoyed that Erica isn't thanking her either and tells her that she only told her to make up for what happened with Miss Manson. Erica sends Barbara back to work. Erica tells Meg that they need to get Vera back straight away and asks Meg if Bea and Monica were in prison together before, when Meg tells her that they were, Erica tells her that she is going to make some enquiries.

The women are working in the laundry when Barbara and Lizzie walk in. Lizzie is carrying a book. Bea asks them where they have been and Barbara tells her that they have been to the toilet. Bea tells them to get on with some work. Lizzie tells them that the Doctor wouldn't see her and complains that she is covered in lumps. Meg walks in and tells Bea, Monica and Lizzie to go with her, when Bea asks what for, she is told that the Governor wants to see them and Monica looks worried. They leave the laundry and Barbara asks Karen what's going on. Karen tells her that they will soon find out and smiles.

Lizzie, Bea and Monica are in Erica's office with Meg. She tells them that she knows that they set up Miss Bennett and that it was Bea who struck Monica, not Miss Bennett, when Bea asks how she knows she tells them that she has found out that they all did exactly the same thing the last time they were in prison together to an officer called Miss Watson and tells Monica that she can move out of Bea's cell straight away. She also tells them that if they are in any more trouble they will be dealt with severely. She tells them to leave the office and think themselves lucky. Meg walks out with them and Erica looks annoyed.

Franky is writing a note to Karen when she asks Doreen to read it, she does and then tells Franky to sign it and send their love to Bea and the others. Franky tells her that if they do that the police will catch them and that she has no love for Bea Smith; the note is just for Karen. Miss McBride walks in and asks them what they are doing. They tell her and then ask her why she is all dressed up. She tells them it's her birthday and Franky asks her if she will be going out on the town. She tells them that she can't afford and that she treats herself to putting on her best clothes and drinking sherry. Doreen asks her how old she is and Miss McBride tells them that she is 71. Doreen asks to have a party and Miss McBride asks them to invite some friends, to which Franky replies that they haven't got any friends. Miss McBride asks them about the girl they are writing to, they could get her on the phone. Franky tells her that she met her when she was inside and that she will be 71 too by the time she gets out.

Steve Wilson is talking to Miss Campbell, the woman Karen's husband was having an affair with, he asks her why she didn't come forward at the trial and she tells him that she didn't need too as Karen had already pleaded guilty and she didn't want her husband to know that she had been having an affair with his best friend. He asks her to tell him everything that happened and she does so. He asks her what Mr Travers was like and she tells him that he was good in bed. He asks her what Mr Travers thought of his wife, and she tells him that she was a teacher and a very religious one, she thinks he was bored with Karen and that Karen was crazy. He asks if he was ever violent and she tells him that she wouldn't have been with him if he was. He tells her that he used to beat up Karen and that cigarette burns were found on her body. She tells him that Karen should have left, as she would have done had it been her, not killed him.

Bea, Monica and Lizzie are back in the laundry. Bea tells them that Erica has done her a favour as she won't have to listen to Monica's snoring any more. Barbara asks how Erica found out and Bea tells her that there are ways of finding out. Monica tells her that they did the same thing to another screw in the old jail and that Erica found out by checking up on them. Barbara tells them that Vera can't be as bad as they are making out and they sarcastically agree as Vera walks in behind them and tells them to get back to work.

Steve meets with Karen's Doctor and asks if he had ever treated her for burns or bruises and he tells him that he never did. Steve asks if she had ever come to see him looking like she had been hit and he recalls one time when she had a black eye. She told him she had a black eye but was more concerned about the baby she was carrying and he referred her to a specialist. He is shocked when Steve tells him that Karen isn't pregnant any more. He asks if she might have had an abortion and he tells Steve that there is no way as she really wanted the baby.

In the recroom Vera tells Karen to turn the television off as the Governor ordered no privileges for 2 days. Bea tells her that it was only her, Monica and Lizzie that lost their privileges, no one else. Vera tells them that they don't run the prison and they will do what they are told when they are told and at once. She tells Monica to get her things out of Bea's cell and then tells them to move. Bea, Lizzie and Monica move out of the recroom. Meg walks in and asks Vera if everything is alright and Vera thanks her for helping her out with the mess she got in to. Meg tells her that she needn't thank her and Vera asks who it was, Meg nods in the direction of Barbara and Vera smiles.

Steve is talking to Greg in his surgery and asks if she was pregnant when she arrived and Greg tells him that she was examined but not for pregnancy, he tells Greg that she should have been 7 months pregnant. Greg tells him that she isn't and hasn't said anything about it. Greg tells him that Karen wanted children more than anything and she would never have had an abortion. Steve finds out that Greg knew Karen well before she was put in prison and is told that it is none of his business as it has nothing to do with Karen's appeal. Steve then leaves to meet with Karen and thanks Greg for his help. The Sister walks in, telling Greg that Lizzie is waiting to see him and he refuses as she is imagining things that are wrong with her with the help of the medical dictionary she has been reading.

Steve is talking to Karen in the interview room and he asks her to tell him the full story. He tells him that he wants to help as she has a very good chance with her appeal but he must know everything if he is going to help her. She agrees and tells him that she was pregnant but her husband wasn't happy with it and started to beat her, she had an abortion as she thought that in a year or two things would be different; Wayne would stop beating her and they would be happy again, when she returned home after having the abortion she found Wayne in bed with another woman.

Miss McBride is teaching Doreen how to dance when there is a knock at the door. She tells them to hide in the kitchen and answers the door to her nephew. He walks into the living room and she asks him to leave. He walks into the kitchen to get a drink and discovers Franky and Doreen. Miss McBride tells him that they are her friends and that they have been having a party.

Jean is leaving the prison when Steve catches up with her. He tells her that he knows a lawyer who would be willing to help the women when they need it. He agrees to see Lynn Warner again and they call a truce.

Barbara is reading a book on her bed when Vera walks in and asks her if she is getting no trouble from the other women and Barbara tells her that she isn't. Vera tells her that she knows she is the Governor's niece and that it is because she did the right thing that Vera is back at work. Barbara tells her that she did and Vera tells her that she thinks that they are going to get on well.

Miss McBride tells Trevor, her nephew that she met Doreen and Franky when they were working for charity knocking on doors, she asked them in for some tea and they have been friends ever since. He offers to change the record as Doreen and Franky are lighting the candles on Miss McBride's cake. Trevor announces that he needs to phone his boss and tell him he is going to be late the next day. He goes out and picks up the phone and begin dialling a number and asks for the police when Franky cuts him off and threatens him with a knife. Trevor tells them that he knows who they are as he has seen their photos in the paper and that they are holding his aunty prisoner, Doreen agrees. Franky tells him that it was really easy and Doreen suggests locking him in a cupboard, which Franky does.

Franky and Doreen leave Miss McBride's house and she starts crying.
