Episode Details
Two schoolgirls, Sarah and Beth are walking home from School in the rain. Beth tries to persuade Sarah to go to a party at Bill's house and she refuses, telling Beth that she is going to see a movie with her parents. Beth tells her that she will never meet boys or get a boyfriend if she doesn't go out with them and Sarah tells her that she doesn't want a boyfriend. Beth tries again to convince Sarah to go out but she still says no. Beth leaves her by telling her that she will tell her all about the party the next day. A car pulls up next to Sarah and a man who tells Sarah that she is a friend of her Dad's asks her if she wants a lift home as her Dad has invited him round their house. Sarah tells him that she didn't know anything about it as they are supposed to be going out tonight. The man tells her that he Dad must have forgotten to tell her that he would be tagging along. He offers her a lift home and at first she refuses but he convinces her to get into his car, which she does.
The car is then seen next to some run down buildings and the man comes out of one, shirt out and tie undone, looks around sheepishly, then gets into his car and drives off. Sarah's bag and umbrella are lying in the grass and Sarah comes out of the same building, no skirt on and shirt undone, crying, she puts her schoolwork inside the bag and picks it up with her umbrella and stands on the grass crying. Vera is waiting outside the prison when Barbara appears. Vera asks her if anyone saw and her and she tells Vera that she told them she was going to see Aunty Erica. They walk around the side of building and Vera asks her if she has anything. Barbara tells her that Monica has asked her smuggle things into the prison by making a phone call to one of her friends asking them to bring in Monica's special things, she tells Vera that doesn't know who she has to call, she only has a number. Vera is wary of letting Barbara call the number until Barbara reminds her that Vera wanted to get her own back on Bea and Monica.
Vera walks back into the prison and the receptionist tells her that there is some mail to check through. She asks Vera if she feels bad reading the women's letters and Vera tells her that if she doesn't like it she shouldn't be working in a prison. Vera sends her to the Governor with letters and ushers Barbara in to make the phone call and tells her to hurry up. Barbara speaks to someone called Alec and asks him to bring a parcel in addressed to Barbara Davidson, she tells him he will get paid and then ends the call, telling Vera that the parcel is on its way and she tells her that when it comes she is not to check as thoroughly as she would and then wait until she hands it over to Monica so that she can get her revenge on Monica. Barbara walks out and Jean walks in and asks if there is any mail for Lynn, Vera tells her that there isn't any and that she should stop running round after the women as they already think she is a soft touch. Jean explains that Lynn is in hospital and is very sick and that a letter might cheer her up and Vera replies that Lynn is nothing but a waste of time!
Sarah's mother is on the phone to a woman called Mabel and she finishes the call and looks at the clock- it's 4:30pm, her mother looks worried. At 5:15pm, her mother is on the phone to one of her friends and finds out that she didn't tell her where she was going or what time it was. She ends the call as someone walks in- its Sarah's father. Her mother tells him that she is worried as Sarah is not home from school yet and that her friend Beth told her that she left Sarah over an hour ago and told her she was coming straight home. Sarah's mother thinks that something has happened to her. Her father, Ken, thinks that she must have got side tracked by something and her mother isn't convinced, asking him if they should call the police. Ken tells her to get ready and reassures her that she will be back before she has finished. Her mother is still worried and Ken tells her that they will give it another half an hour and if Sarah still isn't home they will call the police.
Lynn is in hospital. Jean has come to see her and uses reverse psychology to try and get Lynn to talk to her, telling her that she might as well end it all as she has nothing to live for. She also tells her that she is only on remand and that she might only have to serve a few more months, or none at all if she appeals against her conviction and asks her what her parents would think if she killed herself. Lynn replies by telling her that they would be pleased and Jean disagrees. She thinks that Lynn loves them but Lynn doesn't think that they love her after what she has done. Jean tries to reassure her by telling her that they are, at most, shocked and disappointed but it doesn't mean that they have stopped loving her. Lynn isn't convinced. Jean asks if she has written to them and she hasn't. Jean offers to write to them for her and tells her that she has arranged for her to see Steve Wilson again, he has agreed this time to defend Lynn. Lynn tells her that she doesn't like him and she tells Lynn that that is beside the point, he is a good barrister and with his help she has every chance of being free. Jean tells Lynn that she is trying to help her and Lynn asks why anyone would want to help her. Jean tells her that it is her job and that she deserves another chance at life. Lynn tells her that she already tried doing that and Jean tells her to try again as she doesn't think Doug would want Lynn to give up.
It's 5:45pm and Sarah's mother offers to drive around looking for her, Ken offers to call the police and dials the number, telling her wife, Catherine, that she will be alright. He tells the police that Sarah has gone missing as Sarah walks in through the door. She apologises for being late and tells her parents that she was at a friend's house. Catherine asks Sarah about what has happened to her uniform and notices a bruise on the side of her face and asks Sarah what's happened. Ken goes near Sarah and she backs away. Catherine asks her what has happened to her. She tells them that she fell over on the way home and went to a friend's house to clean up; she didn't phone home as she had forgotten the time. Catherine tells her to go and get changed, ready for the film. Ken is angry that she didn't phone home as he finished work especially to go and see the film; he thinks Catherine is too soft and she thinks that he is being too hard, telling him to be thankful that she is alright. Ken hears Sarah in the shower and her mother tells her to hurry up. Catherine thinks that Sarah is upset about something and he tells her that she will be alright once she has seen the film.
Jean arrives at work the next morning and tells Steve Wilson that Lynn has agreed to see him.
Greg is in his surgery with the Sister, he tells her to order more antiseptic and do a stock check too. Karen knocks and walks in, telling Greg that he wanted to see her. He tells the nurse to leave and Karen doesn't think it's a good idea after he got a warning from the Governor. Greg refuses to be watched and she tells him that she doesn't want him to get in to trouble. He tells her that Steve Wilson has been to see him and asks Karen why she didn't tell him she had had an abortion. She tells him that it is none of his business. He tells her that he was the one who got her the lawyer in the first place and is angry that she has cast him aside now she has got what she wanted. She tells him that she appreciates his help. He is angry that she tells him nothing any more and she tells him that he is not her lawyer. He tells her that he has noticed that her lawyer has been in to see her a lot and that they can't have much to go over any more. He tells her that he is an attractive man and that she might not need Greg any more. Karen is angry and tells him that she is just another prisoner, incase he had forgotten.
Steve Wilson is talking to Lynn. He apologises for being hard on her the last time they spoke but he didn't want to get her hopes up as he can never be sure what the court will decide. Lynn tells him that she has been in court before. He tells her that he has been looking at her record and is sure that they will get a low sentence if they work on getting the court's sympathy. He tells her to plead guilty to being an accessory to armed robbery but they will be working on the reasons as to why Lynn got involved. Steve believes that he will be able to use some of the evidence from her last trial to make the court compassionate towards her. He tells her that they will argue that she wasn't properly reaccepted back into society and that the only person to show any understanding towards her was Doug, the man she married. He asks if Doug forced Lynn to help him with the robbery and Lynn tells him that Doug only wanted them to have a future together and that he loved her. Steve asks why she agreed to help Doug to do the job and she tells him that Doug said that he wouldn't be able to do anything without her help and that it would be too dangerous if she didn't help. Lynn tells Steve that she didn't want Doug to get hurt. Steve asks her if she still wants to be represented by him and she agrees. He tells her that she is getting the best in the business and Lynn tells him that Jean said exactly the same thing. Steve is shocked.
Greg signs out as Jean comes in. Vera is sorting through some mail. Jean tells Greg that she has been to see Lynn and that she won't be committing suicide again any time soon. Jean invites Greg round for dinner and he accepts. Barbara walks into reception and Vera tells her that a parcel has arrived for her. She tells Barbara that she will have to check it and looks at the receptionist. Vera opens the parcel and there is a shoebox inside it. She opens that and discovers a doll. She looks at it then puts it back and gives it to Barbara. Barbara then leaves reception.
Catherine is worried about Sarah acting differently and Ken thinks that she is just going through a phase. Catherine tells him to talk to Sarah and he tells her that he tried the night before and she didn't want to talk. Catherine worries about her not feeling well and thinks that she might be coming down with the flu. Ken agrees, telling Catherine that she doesn't normally want to miss school. Catherine wonders if she is in trouble at school and Ken asks if Sarah has said anything to her. Catherine tells him that she hasn't but she thinks she is frightened to go back to school. Ken thinks she might have got into trouble with one of the teachers, Catherine thinks that she might have had a fight with one of her friends and he disagrees. Ken rushes off to work, telling Catherine that one day off school wont do Sarah any harm. Catherine is tidying away the breakfast things when Sarah screams for her. She comes back into the living room and Sarah screams again. Catherine sits her down and asks her what's wrong. Sarah goes on to tell her mother about what happened when she was attacked, telling Catherine that the man raped her.
Bea, Lizzie and Monica are walking down the corridor when they meet Vera. They ask her how she is and she asks Bea how it feels now that she isn't sharing a cell with Monica. Bea tells her that Vera has done her a big favour as she won't have to listen to Monica snoring any more. Monica tells Vera that she and Bea always got on much better when they weren't sharing the same cell. Vera tells Monica that she hasn't forgotten about them setting her up. Lizzie tells her that they were only joking and they carry on walking down the corridor.
Vera walks into Barbara's cell. She is sat with the doll, she takes something out of it and hides it under the pillow when Vera walks in and closes the door. Vera asks her why she hasn't given the parcel to Monica and she tells Vera that she was told to wait as Monica doesn't want the other women to know about it. She tells Vera that she was just going to deliver it and asks her to keep the women busy whilst she puts the doll in Monica's cell and asks Vera to arrange to have the cell searched afterwards. Vera tells her that she can't order a spot check without good reason and Barbara tells her that she will have to think of one. Vera tells Barbara that if it doesn't work, she will regret it and leaves the cell. Barbara pulls off the dolls head and takes out some tablets.
Doreen and Franky are walking through a park when Doreen wonders how Miss McBride is. Franky thinks she will be alright. Doreen is angry that her nephew turned up and thinks that he is only after her money. Doreen hopes that she isn't lonely. They sit down on a bench and Doreen asks Franky how much money they have left. Franky tells her that they have nothing left as she needed some cigarettes. Doreen complains, telling Franky that she could have got something to eat with the money. Franky takes out on of the cigarettes and lights it, telling Doreen that it would take loads of money to feed her. Doreen thinks the same of Franky. Doreen gets up and pulls a newspaper out of a nearby bin then sits down again and starts looking through. Franky asks her what she is doing and Doreen tells her that she is looking for a job. Doreen tells her that if they can get a job in a big place, like a factory, no-one will check up on them. Franky thinks it's a waste of time. Doreen finds a vacancy for packers and tells Franky that they could do that. Franky tells her that it's too risky. Doreen tells her that it would be less of a risk if they spilt up until one of them finds a job. Franky tells her that she has heard enough about working in factories and Doreen tells her to wait on the bench and she will go and check it out. Franky asks her if she is running out on her and Doreen tells her that they are a team and throws her the teddy bear.
Meg walks into Erica's office, Vera is already there. Erica tells Meg that Vera has just told her that some of the women are planning to break out of the prison. Vera tells her that she overheard them talking in the laundry. Erica asks Meg if she has heard or noticed anything similar and Meg tells her that she hasn't but is sure that they wouldn't. Erica tells her that they probably think that as Franky and Doreen got away with it then will be able too as well. Vera tells them that some of the women already have knives hidden in their cells. Meg asks Vera if she knows who is involved and Vera tells her that it's Bea and her friends but they could have been joking. Erica tells them that they can't afford to take any chances and orders spot checks of the cells immediately. They all leave the office and Vera smiles.
The women are lined up outside the gate and Erica is stood outside one of the cells as it is being checked. Vera comes out and tells two of the women that they are next. They follow Vera and Erica follows them. Barbara smiles at Erica and she smiles back. Monica asks Bea what's going on and Bea asks Lizzie what she has pinched. Lizzie tells them that she hasn't stolen anything and is going straight. Bea laughs and Erica tells them to be quiet. Meg and Vera come out of the cell and Vera tells Monica that her cell is next. They all follow Meg and Vera to Monica's cell. Bea asks Erica what they are looking for and is then called into Monica's cell. Meg gives Erica the drugs and tells her that they were found under her pillow. Erica asks where they came from and Monica tells her that she doesn't know as she didn't put them there. Erica reminds her of the penalty for possessing drugs. Vera and Barbara smile, Bea looks angry.
A police woman is talking to Sarah, with a detective, about what she has told her Mum. She tells the officer that the man's name was Jack Harris and Catherine tells them that she never heard Ken mention him before. The detective thinks that he was probably employed just to get Sarah in the car. Sarah tells him that Jack told her that he knew her father. The detective tells her that he could have found out about him in lots of different ways. The police woman asks her if she has ever seen him before and she shakes her head. The Detective asks her if she would recognise him again and she tells him that she would. He goes over the description she gave of him and tells her that it's a bit vague. Catherine thinks it's enough but the detective tells her that there could be hundreds of men who fit the description. The police woman asks her if she can remember the registration plate on his car and when she can't she apologises. She tells the police woman that the car was red but she doesn't know what kind it was. Catherine asks how she can possibly remember what kind of car it was when she was being molested at the time. The police woman tells her that although it isn't easy, they need all the information they can to help them to find the man. The Detective asks Sarah if she could find the place again and she thinks that she might be able to. He asks her if the man used force and Catherine tells him that the man hit her and that should be enough. He tells her that they have to ask. The police woman asks if he had a weapon and she shakes her head. She asks Sarah if she fought him or scratched him. Sarah tells her that she tried but he was too strong. She tells her that he hit her and said he'd kill her if she screamed. Sarah then starts crying. The Detective asks for Sarah's uniform to use as forensic evidence and Catherine tells them that she washed it as it was dirty and she didn't know what had happened to Sarah.
Monica is in Erica's office with Meg and Vera. Erica tells Monica that she won't ask her again and Monica swears that someone else has put the stuff there, not her. Erica tells her that she will be put into solitary until they find out what has happened. Monica tells her that she can't do it and Erica asks Vera to take her out. Vera does so and Monica cries out that she has been set up. She tells Vera to put someone on duty in the garden at all times as they could be thrown over the fence at any time. Erica tells Meg that she wants security tightened to avoid it happening again; she wants officers, staff, visitors and anything brought into the prison searched thoroughly. She tells Meg that that will stop any more from coming in. Erica asks Meg if she found any knives in the cells and Meg shakes her head, telling Erica that it was probably a joke, as Vera said.
Vera is watching the women in the garden when Barbara walks out. She asks Vera how she thought it went and Vera asks her where the rest of the stuff is. Barbara isn't sure as to what she means and Vera tells her that the doll would have held lots more pills than were found. Barbara tells her that Monica must have given them out. Vera then asks who Monica asked Barbara to call and she tells her that she didn't know, as she was just given a phone number and she tore it up and can't remember it. Vera tells her that Erica will work hard to find out how the stuff got it. Barbara tells her that she will only know if Vera tells her.
Catherine sends Sarah to bed, Ken has arrived home. The police woman tells Catherine that they are going to bring some photographs round for Sarah to look at. Ken asks about them and the police woman tells him that they will be of known sex offenders. Catherine is disgusted that they know of men who rape women and girls and they do nothing about it. The detective tells her that it is the court's job to send them to prison; all they do is try and catch them. Ken tells him that they want him caught and he agrees. The detective tells him that they have got very little to work on and finding him won't be easy. He tells them that it's unlikely if they do find him that he will be sent to prison. Catherine asks why that is and the policewoman tells her that in most rape cases the victim has to go to the police straight away. Sarah waited 15 hours before she told anyone had a shower and had her uniform washed. Catherine tells them that their own doctor confirmed that Sarah had been molested. The Detective asks if Sarah has a boyfriend and is told that she hasn't then implies that Sarah might have had intercourse with him then got scared and cried rape. Ken is angry, telling them that they believe Sarah. The detective agrees with him and then tells him they will be in touch and leaves. Ken wonders why she didn't tell them last night and Catherine tells him that is was because she was ashamed and didn't want them to think badly of her. Ken wonders why she would do that and Catherine tells him that if they hadn't expected so much of her then she might have found it easier to confide in them.
Franky is sat on the bench and has smoked a lot of cigarettes, she notices a man walking towards her and hides in the bushes, grabbing a stick as she does so, the man walks past her, without seeing her.
Erica, Meg and Vera walk into reception. Erica asks the officer on duty for the incoming parcels book and tells Meg and Vera that she wants every parcel checked, no matter how innocent it may look. The officer hands her the book and starts to look through it. Erica tells her that if they have any doubts then she will deal with it. She asks Vera if she put someone in the garden and Vera tells her that she been there herself and Officer Barlow has just taken over from her. Erica notices that Monica Ferguson hasn't received a parcel since she has been in the prison and Meg suggests that a visitor might have brought it in. Erica tells them all that she wants two officers on duty in reception and that they are to check all personal belongings of visitors and staff and that prisoners are no longer allowed physical contact with any visitor, she tells them she also wants spot checks on the cells at odd intervals and the officers agree with everything she has said.
Bea is talking to Lizzie and Barbara and she can't understand why Monica would be caught with drugs as she would only ever go as far as aspirin and nothing more. Barbara suggests that she might have wanted to make some money and Lizzie agrees. Bea tells them that she has known Monica for years and she wouldn't do that either. Barbara tells her that some people would do anything for money. Bea tells them that she is annoyed that they aren't going to get any privacy now because of the person that brought in the drugs, which might not be Monica and that they are going to be having their cells checked all the time from now on. Lizzie asks why the person couldn't have brought in booze instead. Lizzie tells them that anyone can get hooked on drugs but drink didn't do anyone any harm. Bea tells her to shut up and slams the press down.
Doreen comes skipping across the park and finds Franky gone and her teddy bear on the seat. She calls out to Franky and runs over to a bush. Franky comes out and asks Doreen where she has been. Doreen tells her that they gave her a test run packing some fruit. Franky asks her if she got the job and Doreen tells her that she was doing really well until she got hungry and started eating the fruit. She got caught and booted out. She tells Franky that she has found them somewhere to stay as she met a bloke she used to know as she was coming out of the factory. She tells Franky that he said that they could go and stay with him for a while. Franky asks her why she didn't think of him before they broke out; she told Franky she didn't know anyone. Doreen tells her that she didn't know where he lived and his name is Toddy. Franky asks her if he is at his house and Doreen tells her that he works on a night shift and they could move in because he won't be back until the morning. Franky tells her that she just met him today and she tells Franky that she didn't. She then tells Franky that she did and Franky asks her why he is letting them move in and Franky asks her if she had sex with him and she tells her that she did, but she only did it to get a roof over their heads and she tells Franky that she wasn't coming up with any better ideas. Doreen tells Franky that she is sick of running and wants to stop for a few days until they think of something else.
Catherine is crying when Sarah comes in. She asks Sarah if she has slept. Sarah asks her what is wrong and she tells her that she was remembering a time when Sarah wanted to join a pony club, she had an accident, fell off and hurt herself. Sarah tells her that she didn't want to go back and Catherine reminds her that she told her that she had too otherwise she would be too scared to ride a horse again. Sarah tells her that her Dad didn't want her to go back either and she asks Sarah if she was glad that she did, as she is good at it. Sarah asks her what will happen if she catches the man. Catherine tells her that there will be a trial and Sarah asks her if she will have to go. Catherine tells her that she will, as they will want to ask her some questions and she will need to tell them that that was the man who attacked her. Sarah tells her that she can't face him again and Catherine tells her that the man has to be punished. Sarah tells her that she doesn't want to as they don't believe her and she starts crying. Catherine tells her that her parents believe her and that they won't let her be hurt any more.
Vera is supervising in the garden again when Barbara runs over to her. Vera asks her what she doing outside and Barbara tells her that it won't be comfortable, being watched all the time and Vera tells her that it is the same for everyone. Barbara tells her that she is used to privacy and home comforts and tells her that she would like a colour, portable television in her cell. Vera tells her that it would be impossible. Barbara tells her that she could arrange with Aunty Erica and that she wouldn't be able to pay for it but as Vera is a friend she could organise it. Vera tells her that she won't be blackmailed; Barbara tells her that it is payment for services rendered and asks for it as soon as possible and walks away. Vera tells her not to count on it.
The women are in the laundry. Meg is bringing Bea back as she has spotted her hanging around Monica's cell and warns her that if she is caught again then she will be put in solitary. Meg asks where Barbara is just as she walks into the laundry. She asks Barbara where she has been and Barbara tells her that she has been to the toilet and Meg leaves. Lizzie asks Bea if she has found anything out and Bea tells her that she thinks Monica is innocent. Barbara asks her if she knows who did it and Bea tells her that that is what they are going to have find out and the person that did it isn't going to get away with it if it's the last thing Bea does. Barbara blames Vera and Bea agrees, telling Barbara that the person that did it is going to be very sorry.
Catherine is at home when Ken walks in and apologises for being late. He asks her how Sarah is and Catherine tells her that the doctor has been and given her a sedative. She asks Ken if he had to go back to work. He tells her that he had done all he could and felt that she could cope better with him out of the house, telling her that the sooner things get back to normal, the better it will be for all of them. Catherine asks him if he means that they should forget what has happened and he tells her that he didn't mean that. She asks him what they are going to do and he tells her that the police will handle it now, he tells her that they won't catch him and that if they do Sarah will have to go through everything again. Catherine tells him that they must catch him as he has got to be punished, made to suffer. Catherine tells Ken that the man won't get away with it as she won't let him.
