Episode Details
Jean is sat in her office when Steve Wilson walks in. He asks her if she can help him find Karen's mother as she has sold her shop and her home and disappeared. Steve tells her that the trial is going to be long and hard and that he needs to talk to Karen's mum. Meg walks in and asks Meg to talk to Lynne as it's her trial the next day. Jean agrees, Steve leaves and she tells him that she will him to find Karen's mother. Lynne bursts in telling Jean that welfare people only screw up everyone's lives.
Ted Warner asks an old friend Syd to give Lynne a job on work release from the prison and he agrees.
Lynne asks Jean if she has heard anything from Lynne's father. Jean tells her that she hasn't and isn't surprised after what Lynne and Doreen did the last time he visited. Lynne complains that he can't be much of a father if he won't help her when she needs it. Jean tells her that he cares but she won't give him a chance. Jean reminds Lynne of all the things that he has had to deal with and Lynne tells her that she didn't want to hurt him. Jean asks her what she wants her to do and Lynne asks her to talk to her father again and she agrees. Lynne tells her to tell her father that she is sorry.
Barbara's Uncle questions Barbara, telling her that her parents are very worried. She tells them that worrying wont get her out. He tells her that she is only making things worse. Barbara tells him to try living in a cage and that Erica is not all she makes out to be. He tells her to live by the rules. Barbara tells him that Erica had it in for her when she stepped inside Wentworth. He tells her that none of this is Erica's fault and she tells him that it's not her fault that she is related to Erica. He tells her that she has been put in an awkward position. Barbara tells him that she has done nothing to help, that the conditions are terrible and that she has been in solitary since she arrived then blames her Uncle again.
Vera is in reception with Steve. She comments that he is spending lots of time in the prison. He tells her that he's become involved and doesn't know how or why. He leaves as Erica enters telling Vera that she asked to see Barbara and Vera tells her that she is still with her visitor. When Erica asks who it is, Vera tells her that it's Barbara's Uncle. Erica asks that she be sent straight to her when she has finished her visit.
Erica leaves and an officer comments on Erica's bad mood. Vera tells her she isn't surprised as the visitor is Erica's husband.
Meg walks into the office and tells Erica that Mr Davidson wants to see her. Erica sits behind her desk and tells Meg to show him in after being unable to think of an excuse. He walks in and she tells him that she hasn't much time. He comments on her office then she asks him what he wants. He tells her that he thinks that she has treated Barbara terribly. Erica tells him that she is receiving the usual treatment that a drug smuggler would. Michael tells her that Barbara didn't mention that to him. Erica tells him that she doesn't care what he or Barbara thinks. He tells her that Barbara is frightened and she tells him that it is all an act.
Doreen and Martha push Catherine into a door as she walks along a corridor. She walks to the recroom, looks in and is about to leave when Bea invites her in and she sits down. Bea tells Doreen to turn the radio down and then shows Catherine a picture of her daughter. Bea then reminisces about Debbie and tells Catherine that she misses her. Bea then comments on Catherine's daughter and lifestyle then tells her that she never had anything like it. Catherine asks Bea what she has done and Bea tells her that she has done no worse than her as they are both paying for it, Bea adds that it was worth it.
Lynne is in her cell when Barbara walks in complaining about her relatives. Barbara tells Lynne that the trouble will start when her parents get back as she has ruined the family name. Lynne tells her that her family deserted her and Barbara tells her that she is lucky. Barbara tells her that she had a second chance to get out of Wentworth but she blew it.
Erica and Meg walk into her office. Erica comments that Barbara is causing more trouble for her as the Department and Michael are unhappy with Erica's treatment of Barbara. She is annoyed as she tells Meg that she deals with the problems in the prison first and the Department only find out once she has conducted a full enquiry into the matter. Erica asks her why the VJ found out so much and Meg tells her that she told him everything. Erica asks if she was implicated and Meg tells her that she wasn't. Erica then asks who informed the VJ that Barbara was her niece and deducts that it was Vera. She adds that with her niece in the prison it gives Vera the opportunity she has been waiting for to take over as Governor of Wentworth.
The women are in the laundry moaning about Catherine. Bea tells them to shut up. Catherine enters the laundry and Doreen and Lizzie tease her further. Bea reminds them of what she said as Barbara walks in. Doreen asks her if she has any cigarettes and Bea comments that she only deals in hard drugs. Doreen tells Bea that Barbara does smoke and takes her cigarettes off her, then tells her to give her any more she might have or receive a bashing.
Bea laughs as Vera walks in and tells Catherine to get out of the laundry as she isn't supposed to be working there and Vera leaves the laundry. Catherine tells Bea that she is going to report Vera for ignoring the violence. Bea tells her that if she knows what's good for her she will ignore it too. Catherine leaves. Doreen comments on the fact that the screws aren't being nice to Barbara any more.
Jean is on the phone, trying to get in contact with Ted Warner as Steve walks in. She tells whoever is on the other end of the line to get Ted to contact her as soon as possible and puts the phone down. Steve comments that he handles nothing but hopeless cases inside the prison. First Catherine then Lynne as she doesn't want to help herself. He wishes he hadn't taken her case on. Jean tells him that she has put a lot of effort into her case. He tells her that for him to carrying on helping Lynne she must drop the hardened crim act. Jean tells him that she is reverting back to her old self. He tells Jean that she had better be. Jean tells him that if they could get Ted to talk to Lynne then she might change. Steve informs Jean that they came into the prison together and Ted is talking to Lynne now.
Ted is talking to Lynne in the interview room. He tells her that his friend Syd is willing to give her a job in his nursery if Mrs Davidson grants her the work release. Ted tells her he helped her not knowing whether she wanted him to or not. Lynne tells him that she did and she apologises for everything that she has put her parents through. Ted tells her that he had to help her.
Jean leaves her office, wishing Steve good luck with Lynne's trial as Ted knocks on the door and walks in and asks her if he can talk about Lynne's work release. She tells him that she is busy, then asks if he has seen and spoken to Lynne. He tells her that he has and that Lynne is a good girl. Steve asks him to sit down and Jean leaves.
Later, Steve and Ted leave Wentworth together and he tells Ted that he needs to ask him some questions about Lynne's background. Lynne is put into a police car and smiles at Ted. He leaves with Steve, telling him to do something to help her.
Erica is questioning Vera in her office about what happened when she was left in charge. Vera tells her that she didn't start any nasty rumours but she did tell the VJ that Erica was Barbara's Aunt. She tells her that she knew Erica didn't want the prisoners to know but she didn't think it applied to the VJ as well. Vera goes on to tell her that she denied the fact that Erica was giving Barbara special treatment. Erica then sends Vera out.
Barbara is scrubbing the floor in a corridor when Doreen approaches her and asks her for more cigarettes. Barbara tells her to piss off and Doreen pours the contents of the mop bucket over her head and laughs. Barbara attacks Doreen and they start fighting. Bea and Catherine come out and watch and when Catherine asks Bea to do something, she refuses. Vera walks down the corridor and breaks up the fight. She blames Barbara as Doreen tells her that Barbara attacked her for no reason. Vera tells Barbara to clean up the mess or go back to solitary. Catherine then lags on Doreen and Vera tells her to shut up and leaves. Doreen tells Barbara that she is still going to collect the cigarettes.
Later, Catherine sees Barbara sitting on her bed as the lunch bell rings. She asks Barbara if she is going to eat anything and she tells Catherine that she isn't hungry. Catherine tells her that she should let the Governor know what happened and Barbara comments that she wouldn't care. Catherine tells her to tell Erica about Vera and she tells her that Erica is behind it all and is trying to make her life hell. Catherine tells her that she should still tell her.
After lunch, Bea and Catherine are walking down the corridor. Bea complains about the food then tells Catherine about the time they invited Erica to eat with them and put salt in her food so that they could change it. She tells Catherine that it worked for a while as the Governor even let them cook their own meals, until they got bored. Catherine tells her that Barbara didn't eat anything and Bea tells her that she doesn't care. Catherine comments on how young Barbara is and that she shouldn't be in prison, she would hate it if Sarah was. She tells Bea that she still has lots of things that she wants Sarah to do with her life and she feels helpless. Even though husband is a good man, she tells Bea that she feels that he wants Sarah out of the way. She asks who is caring for Bea's daughter. Bea tells her that she is dead. Catherine apologises. Bea tells her what happened to Debbie and how Vera wouldn't let her go to her own daughter's funeral, as Vera approaches them. She tells Catherine that she has a visitor- her daughter is in the garden and tells her to leave. Catherine does so as Vera tells Bea to get back to the laundry where she belongs.
Catherine is out in the garden with Sarah. She tells Catherine that she took a day off school and hitch hiked to the prison. Catherine is horrified after everything that happened to Sarah. She tells her that her father doesn't care and just wants to get rid of her. Catherine tells her that everything will be alright as she will talk to her father. Sarah tells her that they just want to get rid of her after everything that's happened. Catherine disagrees, telling her that they love her. Sarah tells her that all her father cares about is how the business will suffer and that she is being sent away by him so that business will pick up again. Catherine tells her that she doesn't have to go and Sarah tells her not to worry and leaves.
Steve is interviewing Karen. She comments on his good mood and he tells her that Lynne's trial went very well- she got 12 months with remission. He asks her where her Mother is and she tells him that she doesn't know. He tells her that her Mother has sold everything and asks if she knows anyone who might know where she is as she wants to call her mother as a witness at Karen's retrial. Karen thinks that she will make a good witness- for the prosecution. She tells him that Madge Whitton may be able to help.
Later, Steve visits the address of Madge Whitton and bumps into Karen's Mum. Steve introduces himself and she tells him that she is moving to Queensland to forget all that has happened as no one can help Karen now. She doesn't care what is happening to Karen as long as she isn't involved. Steve wants to ask her a few questions and she refuses as she has a lot to do before she leaves. She tells Steve that Karen admitted she was guilty and only sees an appeal as dragging it all up again. She tells Steve that she doesn't want to get involved and walks off. He questions her about Karen's husband Wayne and she refuses to listen to the idea that Wayne was violent towards Karen. She tells him that she wont be bullied by him. When he asks if she ever saw any physical marks on her body, she tells him that she did and that she threatened to leave Wayne several times. He asks her why she didn't tell them any of this at her trial and she tells him that she didn't see any point as Karen had already admitted to killing him. He then tells her that Wayne forced Karen to have an abortion and she is shocked. Steve asks her to testify in court and she refuses and drives off.
Michael walks into Erica's office. She has received flowers from him. He tells her that Barbara is refusing to see him and he doesn't know what to do as her parents arrive back that evening. Michael then invites Erica out to dinner that evening to discuss what to do.
Lynne walks into the recroom. Bea comments on the fact that she got 12 months and Lynne tells them all that she is going on work release. Vera walks in and tells Karen that she has a visitor. Karen leaves and Doreen comments that work release is crap as they give you the jobs that nobody else wants to do. Lynne tells her that she is happy to do it and Bea comments that Doreen will be playing heavy all on her own from now on.
Karen's visitor is her Mum who tells her that Steve visited her and she asks Karen why she is appealing. Karen tells her that she is doing it as her life is miserable. Karen's mum tells her that she wants to talk to her. Karen leaves, telling her Mum that she doesn't need her help.
Mrs Healy- Karen's mum- is in reception signing out with Vera present as Steve walks in. He tells her that he needs to talk to her.
Later, they are having dinner in a restaurant and Steve asks her to help as no-one else knew what Wayne was like. She tells him to use her doctor as he would have examined her. He tells her that they can't use her doctor as Karen lied to him about how she got her bruises. Steve tells her that she is the only one that can help. Michael and Erica arrive at the same restaurant.
Steve asks Mrs Healy to help and refuses and leaves the restaurant.
In the recroom Doreen takes Barbara's cigarettes from her and Barbara leaves. She meets Vera in the corridor who walks past her smiling. She walks into her cell and shuts the door.
Vera walks into the recroom as the bell goes. She turns off the TV and escorts the women out.
Sarah tells her Dad that she doesn't want to leave and her Dad tells her that she has to leave as everyone is talking about them and taking their business elsewhere. He tells her that he is missing her Mum as she always kept everything together and she tells him to go and see her.
Barbara has barricaded herself into her cell and refuses to let Lynne in who is banging on the door. Vera walks along the corridor and asks Lynne why she isn't in her cell. Lynne explains what Barbara has done. Vera bangs on the door and tells Barbara to let her in. Barbara is sat on her bed and pours petrol all over herself and her mattress, telling Vera that if she tries anything, she will set fire to her bed and burn the prison down.
Michael is reminiscing about their marriage with Erica. He tells her that her ambition split them up. She agrees, telling him that his dollybirds looked after him enough time. He tells her that she should be doing everything she can to help Barbara. Erica tells him that Barbara has caused her nothing but trouble and that the reputation is has worked hard to build up is on the line with the department.
A waiter arrives at their table and tells Erica that there is a call for her and she follows him.
The women are in Bea's cell. Doreen asks if Barbara will burn her cell down and Bea tells her that she might. Catherine asks her if they will get to her in time if she does and Bea tells her that they won't. Doreen comments on the fact that she didn't think it would go this far. Bea tells her that she should have expected it with the way she has been pushing her around and that Barbara deserves everything she gets as she is a drug pusher. Doreen comments that not everyone that does drugs is bad and reminds Bea of her daughter Debbie. She tells Doreen to shut up as Vera walks in and tells them to leave, telling Doreen to help Lynne to move a bed into her cell. Lynne protests but Doreen tells her that she will be fine.
Erica tells Michael that she must leave as there is a problem at the prison. He tells her that it's just like old times and then asks her to help Barbara. She tells him that she will, but only if there is any prison left when she gets back.
Back at the prison, Vera is telling Erica what went on with Barbara and asks her what she is going to do about her. Erica tells her that she is going to do nothing and Vera is shocked. Erica then tells her that Barbara will soon get tired of the act once she gets hungry and she asks Vera if she agrees and Vera smiles.
Barbara is sitting in her cell, looking around it.
Trivia
Carmel Millhouse who played Mrs Healy, Karen's Mother, later goes on to play the manager at the half way house Suzie Driscoll stays at.
