Episode Details

Meg is opening the doors to the cells. Barbara is sat on her bed, still barricaded into her cell.

The women are eating their breakfast, Bea comments that Barbara won't last a day in her cell. Catherine asks Bea if she has ever read the Count of Monte Cristo and Bea tells her that she hasn't. Doreen walks over and takes the Jam from Catherine. Bea tells her that she needs to smack her in the mouth because if she doesn't out do her then Doreen will walk all over her. Catherine tells her that it's because of 'creatures' like Doreen that Barbara has barricaded herself into her cell. Doreen hears her and asks her who she is calling a creature, Bea tells Doreen to shut up. Karen walks over and comments on the fact that Barbara chose to barricade herself in to her cell but will have to face the music when she comes out as Vera wont let her get away with doing it. Catherine comments that it's because of Vera that Barbara has shut herself in her cell. Bea tells her that she wont be in there for long and Vera isn't going to let her get away with it. Catherine comments that Bea seems as though she is looking forward to it and Bea tells her that that's just the way things are and warns Catherine not to play at being a crusader when she does come out.

Meg walks in and tells Catherine that the welfare officer wants to see her before lunch. Catherine doesn't seem interested.

Jean is talking to Ted Warner in her office. Jean tells him that she may have found Lynn a job in a factory which is a job all the same. Ted tells her that she has done her best but Lynn is a country girl and probably won't like working in a factory. Jean asks him if he realises how hard it is to get a job for a prison inmate and he tells her that he didn't have much trouble. Jean is confused and he tells her that an old army mate of his called Sid Butterfield runs a nursery and has agreed to help out. Jean tells him that she doesn't think it's a good idea as there are too many wide open spaces, at least in a factory there will be a foreman to keep an eye on her. Ted tells her that she has nothing to worry about as Sid will keep an eye on her. He asks her to check the place out for herself and she agrees. He tells her that wont take up any more of her time and leaves her office.

Lynn is talking to her Dad in the interview room. Lynn asks him if he asks to go back and he tells her that he has work to do on the farm. Lynn tells him that she will never be able to say thank you or be sorry enough for all the trouble she has caused him and her Mum. Ted tells her that she had better as her Mum is hopefully going to be out of hospital soon and that he has been talking to Jean about the job at Sid's nursery. Lynn asks him if he thinks she will approve it and he tells her that she might as she isn't too bad. Lynn tells him that that's it. She only has 12 more months to serve and then it will all be over, just like a nightmare. Her Dad tells her that that's the way they want it to be as they have always stood by her and will always be waiting for her if she needs them. Lynn hugs him and smiles.

Jean is walking into her office with Catherine. Catherine tells her that she has never done anything and Jean tells her that she finds it hard to believe that a woman like her has never done anything with her life. Catherine tells her that she never wanted to go to University and when she married Ken she just wanted to make a nice home for him, apart from doing the usual things like being on various committees and playing tennis once a week with the ladies. She tells Jean that there was never any need to do anything. Jean tells her that there is every reason to do something now because if she carries on doing nothing in prison she will just sink lower and lower. Catherine asks her if she always tells everyone that and she tells her that she needs to save it for someone far more deserving like Barbara Davidson as she has locked herself in her cell because the women are terrorising her, with the approval of one of the officers. Jean asks her what she means and then Catherine tells her that it feels more like active encouragement. Jean tells her that she has made a very serious statement and Catherine tells her that it was meant to be. Jean asks her to repeat what she has said to the Governor and Catherine tells her that she has seen enough of life on the inside to know that doing that would be fatal. Jean asks her if she would mind her going and not mentioning Catherine and Catherine tells her that that would be her decision to make.

Meg and Vera are in Erica's office and tells Erica that they have already had one suicide in the prison and the way things are going they are about to have another. Erica tells them that Barbara has always been difficult but she didn't think she would hold out as long as she has. She asks if there is any way that they could force their way in and Vera tells her that there is. Meg tells them that that carries the risk of her setting fire to herself and her room. Vera asks her how else they are going to get in and then tells Erica that the women will hold them in contempt the longer Barbara stays in her cell, commenting on the fact that the women will suggest that if Erica cant control her own family then there will be no way that she can control the prison.

Jean knocks and walks in and Erica asks her what she wants as they are in the middle of an important discussion. Jean tells her that she wants to discuss her niece, in private. Erica sends Meg and Vera out and Jean tells her that her niece has had to barricade herself into her cell for protection against one of them women who is terrorising her. Erica tells her that she will stop that by calling together all the prison officers and Jean advises her against doing it as Vera is actively encouraging it. Erica asks her if she has any proof and Jean tells her that she has. Erica asks her where she is getting her information from and Jean tells her that she cant say anything but if she talks to Doreen then she will find out that Jean is telling the truth. Erica buzzes down to ask for Doreen to be brought to her office at once.

Jean is leaving the office when Meg and an officer are bringing Doreen to see the Governor. Doreen comments that she can't be left to do anything as she will get behind in the laundry. Meg tells her that the Governor is more important as the officer escorts her to Erica's office.

In Erica's office, Erica comments that Doreen thinks she is tough and Doreen grunts. Erica comments that she must speak to her properly, which Doreen then does. Erica then repeats her question and Doreen shrugs her shoulders. Erica comments the Franky was tough and now she is dead. She asks Doreen how many more people she would like to die before she stops acting tough. Doreen comments that she never killed anyone as it was the cop that killed Franky. Erica asks Doreen if she has any idea of the damage she has caused. Erica tells her that if Barbara goes through with her threat of setting fire to her cell then she could die and it would be Doreen's fault. Doreen tells her that it wasn't just her as all of the women were in on it, even Bea and Lizzie. She also tells Erica that Vera was there and saw what was happening.

Karen is in the Courthouse, waiting in a room when Steve Wilson enters and tells her to relax. Then asks her how she is feeling, she signals that she is feeling alright and he comments that she looks beautiful. He sits down and she thanks him, telling him that she feels it as there is a big difference between a uniform and real clothes. Steve tells her that she looks beautiful but vulnerable. Karen asks her if that's a good thing and he agrees, telling that she must look sad for the jury and she tells him that she wont have to try very hard. Steve tells her that she is going to be alright. She comments that it is going to be rough and he tells her that it will be okay. She asks him how bad it's going to be. He tells her that the prosecution are going to try and convince the jury that she is a cold blooded and vindictive murderess. Steve tells her that it will be rough when he gets to her side of the story and asks her if she can take it. Her case is then called. Steve tells her that it is time.

Erica is reprimanding Vera, telling her that her behaviour cancels out any rights she has. Vera tells her that she can talk as she sits in her safe office and doesn't have to handle the rabble day after day. Erica tells her that if she did she would do a much better job than she does. Vera tells her that she has been with the Department for years and no one has ever found fault with the way she does her job except Erica. Erica tells her that she cant call it finding fault when she has evidence that she stood by and watched one prisoner beat up another. Vera asks her what evidence she has, just the word of one of the sluts. Erica tells her that she is going to report what has happened and Vera tells her that she cant as the women do anything they can to get at her, citing the example of Bea and the women trying to frame her for the bashing charge. Erica tells her that it was Barbara's statement that cleared her and tells her to look at the way she is repaying her. Vera comments that Erica told her to treat Barbara like any other prisoner, Erica tells her that if she treats the other prisoners the same way then she deserves to be reported. Erica tells her that she will let her know what she decides and in the meantime wants her to stay as far away from Barbara as possible. Vera tells her that she will do it with pleasure and leaves, slamming the door. Erica sighs.

Meg is stood outside Barbara's cell. She tells Barbara that she isn't doing herself any good as they cant help her if she wont discuss it sensibly. Bea, Lizzie and Martha are walking down the corridor and Bea shouts out to Barbara, telling her that she is on the wrong side of the bars. Lizzie comments that in all the years she has been in prison she has never seen a screw trying to get into a cell. Bea laughs. Meg asks them if they have got work to do and Bea tells her that they came to get the dirty washing out of her cell. Erica walks down the corridor and asks Meg to get the women moving. Meg does so and the women move down the corridor. Erica stands in front of Barbara's cell. Erica tells Barbara to listen and tells her that she has spoken to Doreen who told her everything and has since had a long session with Vera. Barbara comments that Vera was probably lying about her Erica guarantees that Barbara won't have any more trouble with Vera and Barbara tells her that she doesn't believe her. Erica asks her if she has ever lied to her and tells her that she cant think of a single time, even throughout all the difficult times within their family. Barbara tells her that the women will tear her apart as they hate her. Meg walks back down the corridor and Erica tells Barbara that if she comes out and does as Meg tells her to do then she will protect her and promises her that she wont be hurt by anyone. Barbara stands up and moves the furniture away from the door and walks out of her cell. Erica hugs her and tells her to go with Meg as she will look after her.

Later, Erica is pouring coffee in her office when Meg walks in. Erica asks her how Barbara is and she tells her that Greg has given her a sedative and she is resting. Erica offers her a cup of coffee and Meg accepts. Meg tells her that the coffee smells good(!) and then asks her if she has come to a decision about Barbara. Erica tells her that she is going to transfer Barbara as soon as possible. Meg tells her that it's a bit drastic and Erica asks her if she meant an admission of failure to which Meg replies that she wasn't saying that. Erica tells her that she will never get any peace from the women knowing they are related and that despite what she said she can't protect Barbara. She tells Meg that she will be better off in another prison. Meg tells her that the women will accept her in time and Erica comments that during that time they would have nothing but trouble, Meg tells her that it would be a pity and she agrees. Erica tells Meg that she has always tried to run the prison with rehabilitation and reform and it is highlighted that she can't when she can't rehabilitate someone like her own niece. Erica comments that Vera might be right, stamp down and keep on doing it. Meg tells her that she can't believe that. Erica tells her that she will transfer Barbara as soon as possible.

Karen is stood in the dock. Steve stands up and tells the judge that he is representing Karen. He then goes on to tell the jury Karen's story. The judge asks him if they are still pleading guilty. Steve tells him that he is but with mitigation. Steve asks the jury to ask themselves what they would have done if they had been Karen.

Catherine is talking to Ken in the interview room with Vera's supervision. Catherine asks him to understand how Sarah feels. Ken tells her that he does understand how she feels but is wary of the things she might pick up if she stays. He tells Catherine that he went to the club for a drink and overheard Ted Matthews telling his friends that Sarah was having an affair with Bert Warren and that she lied about him raping her and that Catherine ran him over because she thought Bert was going to tell the court what Sarah had done. Catherine is disgusted and then Ken asks her what she would prefer; Sarah to go or stay. Catherine tells him that Sarah will be alright if he spends more time with her. Ken tells her that he has sold the business and she is shocked. He tells her that he got it for a good price and she tells him that he did it because of the expense of Catherine's trial. Catherine asks him what he is going to do and he tells her that he has been offered a job in Sydney. She tells him not to take it and he tells her that there aren't many jobs for men of his age. He goes on to tell her that he isn't going to sell the house he is going to let it out. He tells Catherine that Sarah will be fine with Viv and that she can spend the holidays with him and he will fly down once a month to visit Catherine. Catherine is disgusted that tenants might be using her things and asks Vera to take her back. Catherine tells Ken that he probably did what he thought was best.

In court, Steve is questioning Karen and Wayne's doctor as Greg walks in and sits down. He smiles at Karen and she smiles back. Steve asks her doctor if he examined Karen within the last 12 months and he tells her that he did and that she was pregnant. He asks what the reaction was and he tells Steve that she was delighted as she had always wanted children. The prosecution object to the doctor knowing how Karen felt and the judge agrees. Steve asks him to look at Karen and try and confirm that looks 7 months pregnant. He tells Steve that she obviously isn't. Steve then tells him to confirm that she terminated the pregnancy because she was forced and the prosecution objects again. The judge tells Steve that his witness has confirmed that Karen isn't pregnant and can't ask him his opinion of how this has happened. He goes on to tell him that if he doesn't stick to the rules then he will be advising Karen to seek another lawyer. Steve tells him that it won't be necessary and is asked to carry on examining his witness. Steve asks him if ever treated Karen for any physical injuries. He tells Steve that he didn't but when she came to collect the results of her pregnancy test she had a black eye. Steve ends his examination and the prosecution ask him if Karen came to him for treatment for a black eye. He tells him that she didn't. He is then asked if he knows how her eye was injured and replies that he has an opinion. The prosecution tells him that they are not interested in his opinion and asks the question again to which the doctor replies that he doesn't know how her eye was injured. The prosecution gets the doctor to admit that as far as he knew Mr and Mrs Travers were a perfectly normal, happily married couple.

Vera and Barbara are in reception. Vera is giving Barbara her belongings and signing them out. Barbara says goodbye to Erica and Erica tells her that she will come and visit. Barbara asks her if it will be the same as Wentworth and Vera asks her to sign for her property. Barbara does so as Doreen enters reception. Erica asks her why she is there and she tells Barbara that she is sorry and that she didn't mean anything. Barbara picks up her case and Doreen walks off. Barbara apologises and Erica tells her to go out to the van. Barbara walks past Doreen and she tries to talk to her but Barbara keeps on walking. Erica stands next to Doreen and Doreen tells her that no matter how hard she tries she will never be Franky.

Bea is sat in the Dining room waiting for her food when it is wheeled in on a trolley and comments that they are having cabbage again. Vera brings Karen into the dining room. Bea asks Karen how things are going and Vera tells her to be quiet and that she is not to discuss anything until after the trial. Bea comments that Vera cant stand it when the good guys win. Bea then asks Karen again and Vera tells Bea that she won't have it discussed. Doreen sits down and calls Vera 'Vinegar Tits'. Bea laughs and Vera asks Doreen to stand up. Doreen tells her that she didn't do anything and Vera asks her what she just called her. Doreen tells her that she called her Miss Bennett. Vera asks her what she called her before that and she tells Vera that she was simply asking Lizzie to pass her the vinegar as it goes well with cabbage. She asks Vera to try it.

Bea asks Karen how things are going with her lawyer and comments that he had better be doing a better job for her than he did with Catherine. Karen tells her that it isn't going well at all. Bea asks her what she is trying to prove as she has been in the prison six months and said nothing to anyone.

Ken is at home with Sarah, telling what he plans to do. Sarah asks him to take her with him and he refuses. She tells him that she wants to be with him and he tells her that she will be, during the school holidays. He tells her that he is trying to the best for her.

Catherine is writing a letter to her husband in her cell when Bea walks in. She tells Bea that there are a lot of things that they need to sort out. Bea tells her that she sorted her old man out by shooting him and she comments that she won't ever forget the look on his face. Bea asks her what the problem is and she tells Bea of Ken's plans. Bea tells her that he is typical man; first sign of trouble and they leave. Catherine tells her that he has never been the sort of man who wouldn't face things and Bea comments that that happens until the going gets tough. Vera walks past and tells Bea to get to her own cell as lights out is in 5 minutes. Bea leaves and Catherine tells Vera that they were only having as chat, to which Vera replies that they are in a jail, not a conversation club and locks Catherine in her cell.

In court the next day Karen wonders if it's all worth it and Steve tells her that it is. He tells her that they are going to win and she agrees. He tells her that when they are finished she will have her sentence reduced a lot. She tells him that she hopes so and he tells her that he believes in her and then tells her to believe in herself.

Sarah is visiting Catherine. She tells Catherine that she wishes that things were back to the way they used to be and starts crying. Catherine tells her that she had better go and asks her to promise that she will come and see her as often as she can. Sarah promises that she will and then hugs her, crying even more.

Jean visits Sid in his nursery. She introduces herself and he comments that Ted has already spoken about her. Jean tells him that she has to check all places of work for prisoners on work release and Sid tells her of his good and honest reputation. She tells him that she is concerned for Lynn's welfare. Sid tells her that she will have nothing to worry about as he will be standing over Lynn all the time.

The women are in the laundry. Lizzie and Doreen are folding sheets when Catherine walks in. Bea tells them that they both know her and that she has been promoted so they had better be decent to her or they will be bashed. Doreen asks her for some fags and Bea tells her to go away. She tells Catherine not to worry about Doreen as she is only as tough as they will let her be. She asks Catherine if she has every folded sheets and Catherine tells her that she has. Lizzie comments that she thought Catherine would have had servants to do things like that as she is so rich. Catherine tells Lizzie that she isn't. Bea asks Catherine to hold the other end of the sheet and they fold it. She tells her that Vera is particular about the way the sheets are folded and Catherine thanks her. Bea tells her that it makes her look good when Catherine is around. Catherine comments that she is really a kind person despite the façade she puts up. Bea agrees but tells her not to tell the other women.

Jean walks into Karen's trial as Greg takes the stand to testify. Steve questions him on the examination he gave her when she was admitted to the prison. Greg tells him that she was in good health apart from the burn scars they found on her back. Steve asks him what caused them and he tells Steve that they were caused by someone stubbing out cigarettes on her back. He asks Greg who was responsible and Greg tells him that he thinks it was her husband. Steve asks about her mental health and Greg tells him that she was suffering severe depression. Steve asks him if she was mentally stable to appeal against her sentence within the given time and he tells Steve that she wasn't. Steve asks him If Karen was pregnant and he tells him that she wasn't and that there was no evidence to suggest that she had terminated the pregnancy before entering the prison. Steve asks him if her depression was the cause of her abortion and Greg agrees. The prosecution raise question over Greg's authenticity as a psychiatrist when he is simply a general practitioner giving his opinion on Karen's mental state. He asks Greg if he sought specialist help for Karen and Greg tells him that he didn't. The prosecution then go on to comment how he, as a general practitioner, managed to diagnose her specialist psychiatric state. Greg tells him that he felt capable of doing so. He is then asked if he saw Wayne inflict the cigarette burns on Karen and Greg tells him that he didn't, Karen told him that Wayne had done it. The prosecution comments that she was insane and of a psychiatric state. Greg tells him that he believes what she said. The prosecution then get Greg to admit that he knew Karen before she entered Wentworth and that they were once lovers and contemplating marriage. They then go on to ask Greg that he is assuming that the court will believe that he has no feelings for Karen any more. Greg tells him that he does but that he in not committing any act of purgery. The prosecution tells Greg that they think he is manufacturing his testimony to protect the woman he is still in love with. Greg tells him that he is lying, he comments that Karen emotionally and mentally unstable when she entered the prison and he felt only pity for her as he doesn't love her. Karen looks shocked.

Jean brings Lynn to the nursery and she comments on how beautiful it is and how happy she will be. Lynn asks what Mr Butterfield is like and Jean comments that she thinks he is alright. Jean tells her not to think that everyone is going to be so understanding as she might meet other people who work there that are prejudiced towards her as she is a convicted criminal. Lynn tells her that she won't do anyone any harm and Jean tells her to keep her cool. Sid walks over to them and Jean introduces Lynn. Sid tells Lynn that he is expecting a lot from her and that she must do a decent day's work for a decent day's pay. Lynn tells him that she won't let him down. He asks her if she knows anything about plants and she tells him that she worked in the garden at the prison. He tests her on her knowledge and is impressed. Sid comments that she doesn't look like a hardened criminal and Jean asks him what one looks like.

Karen is being questioned by Steve about her story. She tells him that she thought being pregnant would bring her marriage back together. She tells him that Wayne didn't think the same thing and was violent towards her when he found out, giving her the black eye. Steve asks her if it was unusual for Wayne to beat her and she tells him that he was a violent and cruel man and she stayed with him because she was married to him in a church. Karen then recalls how the priest came to visit after an argument and they talked. He told her that she would be committing murder if she had an abortion and she decided only to go ahead with it to keep Wayne. She tells them that it hurt then and will do forever. She tells Steve that she went straight home and found her husband in bed with another woman. She tells him that she went downstairs, sat down and saw a knife, she went upstairs with it and the girl ran away and she stabbed her husband, while he was in the shower. Karen starts crying and Steve asks for the court to be adjourned. The judge agrees and the prosecution doesn't object as Karen is led away crying. The prosecution comment that her performance was very touching and the jury loved it and goes to ask if they will be as impressed when the prosecution have finished with her.
