Episode Details
The prosecution is questioning Karen over the crime she committed. They detail the facts of the case and surmise that Karen murdered her husband because she felt guilty about aborting the baby he actually wanted. Karen denies this and tells them that she wanted the baby more than anything. The prosecution comment that she wanted it that much that she terminated its life and that of her husbands because she felt guilty and that there is no evidence to suggest that her husband forced her to have an abortion or treated her badly.
Back at Wentworth, Karen is lying on her bed. Bea is making them a hot drink when she tells Karen that they should start a petition so that they have the same rights as the people in Swedish prisons as they get everything. Bea tells Karen that she won't take her mind of tomorrow by lying on her bed and worrying about it. She goes on to say that Catherine has told her that her husband wont be able to look after their daughter unless she is around and then comments on how useless men are and asks Karen for her opinion. Karen replies that she wouldn't know. Bea tells thinks that she isn't the type to play around and asks Karen if her husband was her one and only and Karen nods her head. Bea tells her that she went with other men before she settled on her husband but was faithful to him once they were married, unlike him. Karen tells her to shut up and then the lights go out.
Bea lies down on her bed and asks Karen what Wayne was like. She tells Bea that she used to think he was the most wonderful man in the world and Bea agrees that she used to think that about her husband. Karen tells her that he changed after they were married and started to drink a lot. She tells Bea that she did kill him. Bea comments that she now thinks she is going to get away with it and Karen disagrees.
The next morning, Lynne is ready for work and sits with Doreen and Lizzie in the Dining Room. They ask her why she is so cheerful and then Lizzie comments that she is very lucky. Lynn tells them that she would like to take them all out. Lizzie tells her that she wishes she could go outside and Bea reminds her that she did when her brother died.
Vera walks in and tells Lynn that Jean wants to see her. The women ask her bring things back in with her and Vera tells them to stop as she escorts Lynn out of the Dining Room. Vera reminds her of what would happen if she did try and bring anything back in and the women wish her luck.
Jean is in her office. Vera walks in and brings Lynn with her. Jean asks Lynn if she is ready for the day ahead and reminds her that she is taking on a huge responsibility and if it goes wrong she will be letting herself down and Jean as she wont be able to suggest work release for the women again. Lynn tells her that she wont let her down. Jean offers to pick her up and Lynn tells her that she will make her own way back to the prison.
There is a knock at the door and Meg walks in and reminds Lynn to collect her lunch for the kitchen before signing out as the bus wont wait for her. Jean tells Lynn to go and tells her that she will pick her up. Lynn leaves. Vera comments that she hopes Jean knows what she is doing as she has picked the wrong person for work release. Meg tells her that they have to give her the benefit of the doubt. Vera tells her that she will be convicted several times over for different things in no time. She goes to say that most of the women don't want to be rehabilitated and that she is wasting her time and putting the public at risk and then leaves Jean's office. Meg tells Jean that she will never understand Vera.
Lynn is running down the corridor when Lizzie asks her to put some booze in a little bottle if she finds any. Lynn tells her that she can't as they trust her. Vera walks up to them and sends Lizzie back to the laundry and then reminds Lynn that if she makes one mistake then it will be the last time that any of the women get out on work release.
Steve and Karen are in a courtroom and Steve tells her that he can't understand why she didn't tell the court that her mother knew about Wayne beating her. Karen tells him that it wouldn't have done any good as her mother wouldn't have backed her up as she prefers to pretend that things like that don't happen in nice families. Karen tells him that she won't ask her mother for any help. The court official calls her case. Steve tells Karen not to be frightened and to tell the truth and everything will be alright.
Mrs Healy gets into her boyfriend's car to begin her new life in Queensland. He starts the car and the radio comes on with a news report about Karen. She listens and he asks her why she is interested and if she knew Karen. Mrs Healy tells him that she did, a long time ago. He comments that he remembers the original case and that he felt sorry for her as there always seemed more to what was going on. He tells Mrs Healy that she was the same age as his daughter and that he wishes Karen luck.
Erica [ ] and Jean are in Erica's office. Erica gives her a cup of tea and tells her that she agrees with Vera in that she would hate anything to go wrong. Erica sits down. Jean [ ] tells her that they can trust Lynn and Erica agrees, adding that the press are sensitive about prisoners working on the outside. Jean tells her that it's down to isolated incidents and Erica tells her that isolated incidents sell papers. Jean tells her that she wishes they would realise that they are letting them work on the outside to rehabilitate them as people rather than prisoners. Erica tells her that she doesn't have to convince her as she has been converted and that some people on the board think that her ideas are too liberal. Jean tells her that she would like to extend the scheme to include other girls and Erica tells her that she doesn't want to rush anything and to see how Lynn gets on first. Jean tells her that Lynn will be fine and she will stake her job on it. Erica tells her that she already has and hers as well.
Lynn arrives at work and meets Mr Butterfield who praises her for being on time. He tells her where to put her stuff and then gives her her first job, to plant some seedlings, label them and date them. He tells her that he is going out for a while but Mrs Grant, who is half an hour late will be in soon to look after things. He asks her if she will be alright on her own and she tells him she will.
A woman walks into a shop and looks around before putting a clock into her bag. She tries to leave the shop but is stopped by the manager who asks her to go back into the shop and take her bag with her.
Greg is in his surgery when Jean knocks and walks in and asks him if he has time for a break. He tells her that he is busy and she asks about Karen's trial. He tells her that it's not going well and is turning into more of a farce. He tells her that she won't stand a chance and that it was a stupid idea. He asks Jean how she is going to take it if the jury goes against her. Jean tells him that it wont be easy but it cant be any worse that the situation she is in now. She tells him that Steve is a very successful lawyer and that he wouldn't have taken on the case if he didn't think he could win. Greg agrees and Jean leaves.
A customer arrives at the Nursery and asks for an order. Lynn tells him that she doesn't know anything about it and goes to find someone that does. She shouts for Mrs Grant who doesn't respond. The customer finds the note left with his order and tells Lynn that he has found it. She checks it and then he pays her for it. She asks him for the right money as the office is locked and she can't get him any change. He tells her that he is in a hurry and leaves Lynn with the money.
Vera is in reception when Meg walks in with a new prisoner, the girl who was previously seen shoplifting. Meg tells Vera that she is on remand until tomorrow and shows her the charge sheet. Vera tells her that she will handle it and Meg tells her that it could be difficult and points to the sheet. Vera comments that no name was given and Meg tells her that she refuses to give it but the police have taken her fingerprints and are checking her records.
Vera asks her to turn around and she does so. Vera tells her that she won't gain anything from being un co-operative as she can still be charged and convicted without a name. She asks her to empty her pockets and put her belongings on the desk. Vera checks through her belongings and Meg writes them down on the sheet. She then asks for her watch and tells her that they tell her what time it is. Vera then tells her to sign the sheet and she does so. Vera then tells her that if she is hoping that her friends and family wont find out then she is wasting their time and hers. Meg takes her to the showers and Vera tells her to have a good think whilst she is in the showers as trouble makers aren't welcome.
Steve is giving his closing statement to the Jury when his assistant interrupts him. He asks the Judge if he can talk to him and the judge allows it. The judge asks him if it has relevance to the case and he tells the judge that he has received new evidence and that it would influence the Jury's decision. He asks permission to call once more witness and the prosecution objects. The judge over rules the objection as Steve tells the judge that the new evidence is vital to the case.
Mrs Healy, Karen's mother, is sworn in and Steve questions her. He asks her to confirm that she is Karen's mother. He asks her if she was aware that Karen's husband used to beat her and she agrees, telling him that Karen came to her on several occasions showing her bruises he had given her. She tells him that Karen was looking forward to starting a family, something which Wayne didn't want as he told her that if she wanted grandchildren she would have a long wait. She tells the court that Karen told her when she was pregnant that she was worried what Wayne's reaction would be. He asks her what the reaction was and the prosecution objects, which is sustained. The judge tells Steve not introduce evidence on hearsay. Steve asks him if September 14th 1978 means anything to her and she tells him it does. She tells him that she visited them and that they were rowing and that she heard him say that he wanted her to get rid of the baby and she left without them knowing she had even been there. Steve ends his questioning.
The prosecution then question Mrs Healy. Mr Proudfoot asks her if she and Karen are close and she tells him that they are. He comments that she didn't come forward and give evidence at the original trial. Mrs Healy tells him that there didn't seem to be much point as Karen had already admitted to being guilty. He asks her if she ever spoke to Wayne about him abusing her daughter. She tells him that she didn't think she should come between them. He then comments that she has come forward with evidence which she thinks is important enough to change the result of the trial which she didn't come forward with at the original trial. He goes on to tell her that she expects them to believe that she knows the exact dates of which the statements were made and asks her if she thinks she is stretching the credibility of the court a little too far. Mrs Healy tells him that she doesn't as she wasn't feeling well and that's why she called round to see them. She adds that September 14th is her birthday. Steve smiles.
Lizzie walks into the laundry. She tells Bea and Doreen that Lynn has picked a good day for going out. Doreen tells them that if she has any sense she wont come back as anything is better than the boring dump they are in. Bea asks her what she is talking about as she came back of her own free will. Lizzie tells Bea that when they were over the wall it was different. Doreen tells her that they had the guts to give it a go. Bea asks her what she is trying to say and she tells her that she is saying nothing. Lizzie tells them that she wouldn't mind a day out every now and then and that she must think of her heart first. She asks Bea what she thinks about her going to the Governor and asking her as she has got nothing to lose. Bea laughs and tells them that she can just see the Governor suggesting that Lizzie go out two mornings a week to help out in the canteen at the local brewery and they all laugh. Lizzie comments that that would be her dream job and asks Doreen what hers would be before telling her that she could work the floor in a department store. Doreen comments that it would be good as she could steal lots of things.
Mr Butterfield returns and asks Lynn how things are going. She tells him that she is doing fine and he looks at the work she has done so far. He asks about the plants that were nearby and asks if someone called for them. Lynn tells him that the customer picked them up. He asks if he paid for them and Lynn tells him that she forgot to give him the money. He asks her if she was trying to make some money on the side and tells her that $40 dollars wasn't bad for her first day. Lynn tells him that she simply forgot and that there is no need to call her a thief. Mr Butterfield tells her to stop getting high and mighty with him and to keep a civil tongue in her head as she needs to remember that he is letting her work there as a favour to her Dad. Lynn tells him that if she has to put up with comments like that then she doesn't want any favours. She tells him to take the money and throws it at him and then runs off.
Greg is in his surgery when the phone rings. Steve tells him that they may be in with a chance as Karen's mother has shown up to testify. Greg asks him what made her change her mind and he tells him that what he must have said might have got through to her. He tells Greg that the important thing is that this is the evidence they have been looking for. Greg asks him what the verdict will be and he tells him that he is only optimistic, the jury is out and they shouldn't have to wait too much longer. Greg tells him that he had almost given up hope. Steve tells him to trust him and keep everything crossed and then puts the phone down.
Karen meets her mother and they hug. Karen thanks her for coming and she tells her that she should have been there the first time. She tells Karen that she was on her way to Queensland, her fiancé is outside in the car waiting and that she told him everything and that he didn't say anything about it, he just turned the car round and headed to the court. She tells Karen that she thinks he felt upset that she wasn't doing anything as he has a daughter the same age as Karen. Karen asks her if everything will be alright and Mrs Healy tells her that she thinks so. Karen tells her that she hopes that her efforts haven't been in vain.
Jean is at the nursery talking to Mr Butterfield. She tells him that Lynn wasn't to go anywhere without his permission. He tells her that she just walked off. Jean tells him that this could cost Lynn any chance of an early parole. Mr Butterfield tells Jean about the incident with the money and that he had been mistaken. Jean tells him that he should have reported her going missing. He tells her that he doesn't want her to get into trouble. Jean asks him if he has a telephone and he points her in the direction of it.
Vera and Erica are in her office. The phone rings and Vera is just about to leave when Erica asks Jean if she has notified the police, Jean tells her that she hasn't and when Erica asks her why, she tells her about the incident with the money. Jean then tells her that she will come back once she's calmed down. Erica tells her that she had better as they can't afford another scandal, especially after Franky Doyle escaped. Erica tells her that she must know anything as soon as it happens and is to be kept informed. She puts the phone down and tells Vera that Lynn has disappeared. Vera tells her that she knew Lynn shouldn't have been allowed out alone. Vera asks her if she now believes that Jean has no idea what she is doing. Erica tells her that they have to try. Vera tells her that Lynn is a dangerous criminal who has already been involved in an armed hold up. Erica tells her that she has work to do and Vera leaves.
Lizzie is walking down the corridor when she bumps into Vera coming out of Erica's office. She asks Lizzie what she is doing when she is supposed to be in the laundry. Lizzie tells her that she isn't feeling well as she keeps going dizzy and getting black spots behind her eyes. She tells Vera that she needs some fresh air and a day out would do her the world of good. Vera tells her that the only thing wrong with her is malingering and when Lizzie asks her what it is she is told to go back to work.
Doreen is in the laundry showing Bea a picture of a naked man and fantasises about what she would like to do to him. Bea tells her that she wouldn't know what to do with him if she fell over him. Bea looks in the magazine with two other women and opens out the poster then comments on the fact that they didn't show him in all his glory. Bea asks her where she got the magazine and Doreen tells her that one of the screws gave it to her. Bea tells her that that would be right and throws it back to her [ ]. Lizzie walks in and tells Bea that Greg has told her that she needs glasses. Lizzie Bea that there is nothing wrong with her that fresh air wouldn't fix. Doreen tells her that she was wasting her time. Lizzie tells them that she is not sure how long he has been practising as a Doctor but he isn't going to get it right. Bea laughs and tells her that if she was on the outside she wouldn't be able to sit around with her feet up all day. Vera walks in and comments on what Bea has said telling them that the break was over 10 minutes ago and that she wants to see some work. Bea asks her who she needs to see about the work release program and comments that it can't be her. Vera tells her she is right and she needn't bother seeing anyone about it. Bea comments that she knew no-one would do her a favour. Vera tells her not to take it personally as there will be no more work release for anyone as Lynn Warner has taken off. Doreen comments that its only just started. Doreen drops the magazine and it falls showing a naked man. Vera picks it up and tells them that they are disgusting and walks out. Doreen asks her what she would know and then asks Bea if what she said about Lynn was true. Bea tells her that she doesn't know and calls Lynn a stupid little bitch.
In court, the Jury have agreed that they find Karen not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter. The judge asks Steve if he has anything to say. Steve makes a final plea for leniency. Karen stands up and the judge orders that her sentence be reduced to two years.
Jean runs into her office and calls Mr Butterfield. She asks him if Lynn has any friends or relatives in Melbourne then puts the phone down as Vera runs in. Vera tells her that they have to call the police in now. Jean tells her that that is Erica's decision to make. She asks Vera if she is trying to hang her, Lynn and Erica on one rope. Vera tells her that it's not a girl guides camp but a prison for convicted criminals. Jean tells her that she isn't due back yet as Greg walks in. Vera comments that she is missing. Jean tells Greg to stay as Vera was just leaving. Vera leaves. Greg tells Jean the good news about Karen's trial. He asks her out to dinner to celebrate and she tells him she has a lot to do. She picks up the phone and realises Vera is listening at the door and she tells her to leave again. Vera walks off and Greg shuts the door and walks out with Vera. He asks her what's wrong with Jean and she tells him that the work release program has fallen apart on the first day as Lynn Warner has run off. Vera tells him that she told them it would be abused and comments that if she was in charge the police would have known hours ago. Greg tells her that Erica has a lot of problems.
Jean is talking to Ted and asks him if he has any friends or relatives in Melbourne. She is told that he hasn't and she puts the phone down.
Greg signs out and tells Meg that he is pleased about Karen's news. She asks him to go to hers for dinner as Vera walks in, Meg tells him that Jean wont mind them both being there and then asks Greg to ring Steve and ask him to join them too. He agrees and she offers to cook French food, he leaves. Vera comments that she didn't know Meg could cook French food. Meg tells her that she can't but Jean does it well. Vera comments that she should be as good at her job as she is at her cooking. The officer on duty tells Meg that Erica wants to see her in her office. Meg leaves and Vera comments on how friendly they all are before adding that she is glad that they didn't invite her.
Erica is in her office when Meg enters. Meg asks if it's about Lynn and Erica tells her that she wants to see the new girl as the police have traced her fingerprints and found out that she has previous convictions. She asks Meg to bring her in as she wants to talk to her.
Jean knocks and enters. Erica tells her that she was talking to the police about another matter and had to tell them about Lynn. She apologises and Jean comments that she isn't due back yet. Erica tells her that it should have been reported a long time ago. Meg and Jean both leave Erica's office.
Vera is in reception when another officer asks her to go outside. They walk into the grounds to see Lynn walking towards them. She walks past them and goes into the prison.

Trivia
The magazine [ ] that Doreen shows Bea the picture of the naked man in is called Cleo. It is still in print today and was the first Australian women's magazine to feature non-frontal nude male centrefolds. (Which explains why in the picture she shows you can see the man's bum!) Mel Gibson and Daniel MacPherson have appeared as centrefolds in the magazine!
