Episode Details

Vera shows Lynn into reception and comments that she has made a mess of everything. Lynn tries to leave and Vera tells her that she isn't going anywhere as the Governor will want to see her. Vera picks up the phone and dials a number.

Jean and Erica are in Erica's office when the phone rings. Erica tells Jean that Lynn has returned and Jean leaves, as she does so Erica tells her that she wants to see Lynn first.

Vera tells Erica that she will search Lynn first and Erica tells her that she wants to see her straight away, before she has been checked or searched. Vera puts the phone down and leads Lynn out.

There is a knock on Erica's door and Vera brings Lynn in. Erica asks Lynn where she has been and asks for the truth as she had no right to walk out on Mr Butterfield, she asks her what she thought she was doing and Lynn tells her that he accused her of stealing and she hadn't done anything wrong. Erica tells her that she knows what happened as he telephoned her. Erica tells that she can't understand why she has been so stupid and selfish and Lynn asks her why as she isn't late in being back at the prison. Erica asks her what she has been doing and Lynn tells her that she had been walking around until it was time to come back. Erica tells her that the Work Release Scheme wasn't introduced so that prisoners could wander off sight seeing. Erica explains that she has been given something which carries a high privilege and she has a duty to uphold that privilege for the sake of herself, her employer and the other women who would have loved to have had the same opportunity. She tells Lynn that Jean is trying to make things better and asks Lynn to go and see Jean and explain her behaviour. Lynn leaves Erica's office. Vera can't believe that Lynn is getting a second chance and Erica tells her that she doesn't think Lynn did anything to intentionally defy them. Vera tries to interrupt but Erica tells her that they may have to increase supervision but there is no reason why Lynn's mistake should ruin the chances of the other women doing the same thing. Erica tells her that if they can continue with the work release scheme then they will and she asks Vera to leave.

The women are putting decorations up in the rec room to congratulate Karen on her achievement in court. Bea puts up a sign which reads 'congrats Karen' Vera walks in and asks what's going on [CLICK HERE]. Bea tells her that they are celebrating Karen's good news. Vera tells them that she was charged with manslaughter which still puts her on the wrong side of the law along with the rest of them. Bea comments that she is being unkind and Vera tells them to take the decorations down as there will be no celebrations. Bea tells her that there will and Vera tells Bea that she will go and see the Governor about it. Bea tells her that she's already done it and the Governor is fine with it. Vera storms out of the rec room.

Lizzie comments that Vera gets worse and worse and Doreen agrees. Bea turns the sign round and writes 'rack off Vera!' on it and asks them what they think and then laughs.

Lynn is talking to Jean in her office. Jean asks her if it's correct that she didn't tell Mr Butterfield where she was going or what she was going to do. Lynn agrees and Jean tells her that she is astounded that she thought it would be alright. Lynn tells her that she thought it wouldn't matter as she made it back to the prison on time. Jean tells her that she didn't think and that she has made it harder for the other women to go on the scheme. Jean asks her where she went and Lynn tells her that she went to see Doug's grave. Jean gets annoyed, telling Lynn that they don't normally let convicted criminals of armed robbery go roaming around the countryside; she was a special case and she has blown it. Lynn apologises and Jean accepts, then asks Lynn where they go from here, Lynn comments that there isn't any chance of her going back and Jean tells her that they are suspending her for a week as Mr Butterfield has agreed to take her back. Jean comments that she thinks that he is taking some of the blame himself so she is lucky. She warns Lynn that if she does it again, she will wring her neck.

Erica is sat in her office when there is a knock at the door. Meg shows Susan Rice in and when Erica asks her name she says nothing. Erica tells her that they have checked her fingerprints so they know who she is and she would appreciate an answer. Erica goes on to tell her about her previous convictions and her family and her last known address. Erica reminds her that she is allowed one phone call and asks Susan if she would like them to contact her husband. Susan tells her that she wouldn't. Erica asks about her children and she comments that they are with her mother and allows Erica to contact them. Erica explains that she will be dealt with by the magistrates court the following morning where the matter will be dealt with immediately or she will be sent for trial. Erica asks her if she has any questions and she tells her that she doesn't. Erica tells her to give her mother's contact details to Meg and sends her out. Erica asks Meg to get Jean to talk to Susan as she seems strange.

Later, Meg and Greg and Jean are in Meg's flat and Meg opens a bottle of champagne and pours everyone a glass. Jean toasts them both then apologises to Greg for being funny with him earlier. He tells her that she needn't apologise as it was just one of those days. Meg tells him to accept Jean's apology as they are few and far between. Greg then toasts them both and there is a knock at the door and Meg tells them that it will be Steve, Jean asks him to come in and he does with 2 bottles of bubbly. Steve sits down and Jean and Meg congratulate him on his success with Karen's trial. Steve tells them that he didn't think they were going to be successful at one point as he thought they were doing her more harm than good. Jean tells him that she had every faith. Meg comments that Karen can't be doing much celebrating. Greg then tells Jean that she is going to have to work with Karen to rehabilitate her. Jean tells her that she will work with her and that Steve can hand Karen over to her. Steve refuses telling them that he hasn't finished with Karen and that they will have to work together, much to Greg's disappointment. Steve tells them that as a school teacher she must have a lot of opportunities ahead of her and Jean agrees. Steve tells her that with his help they will be able to get something better for her than the usual. Greg looks disappointed and Meg suggests toasting Karen which they do.

Vera brings Karen into the recroom and the women cheer and burst into song. Vera tells them to keep their voices down. They toast Karen and Bea tells her that they are all proud of her. Bea tells Vera to leave as she doesn't belong in the recroom and she doesn't want Vera's sour face spoiling their party. Vera tells her that she will leave when she she finishes her shift and Bea tells her that it's in 5 minutes and to leave early for a change. Vera tells them that she thinks they are all pathetic. Bea agrees with her telling her that they wouldn't expect anything else from her and then tells her to get out and she leaves the recroom.

Later Vera is in a bar when Anne Yates turns up and gives the barman a package, telling him to give it to some people when they come in. Vera recognises her and they discuss Wentworth, Vera tells her that the system is getting worse and is becoming too lenient, telling Anne that she wouldn't recognise Wentworth any more. Vera tells her that Erica is worse than ever and comments on how awful the women are. Vera then apologises for not offering her a drink. A man approaches the bar as Anne refuses Vera's request. Vera tries to persuade her but Anne still refuses, looking at the man at the bar. She then asks Vera to go back to hers for a drink and Vera accepts. They leave and the man looks at them both.

Later, they arrive at Anne's place; she tells Vera where the bathroom is then leaves her in the lounge as she goes into another room. Vera is clearly envious of Anne's very stylish apartment. Anne comes back out and Vera tells her that it is lovely and that she must be doing well. Anne tells her that she is as she pours her a drink from the mini bar. Vera tells her that she has always wanted a place like Anne's. Anne tells her that it was just pure luck and too good to turn down. When Vera asks her what she does Anne tells her that she works for some friends in a small privately run business and it suits her a lot. They sit down and Anne asks her if she is still living with her mother and Vera tells her that her mother passed away earlier on in the year, just after Anne left. Anne apologises then asks her if she is on her own. Vera tells her that she is and Anne tells her that she must be having lots of parties to make up for lost time and take advantage of the situation. Vera tells her that she isn't and Anne is disappointed. Vera tells her that it isn't easy as she works at the prison all day. Anne tells her that she is glad she doesn't work there any more and goes on to tell her that if she knows how to make money on this inside then she can make a lot more on the outside. Anne asks her what she does in her spare time and Vera tells her that she does nothing. Anne tells her not to sound so miserable and Vera comments that she is miserable most of the time. Anne tells her that she can show her a good time if she lets her and invites her to a party the next night. Vera accepts, telling her that she most kind. Anne tells her that they would be interested to meet her.

The next day, Vera is getting everyone out of bed. Susan is still in her bed when Vera walks in, telling her that she should be out of bed, showered and dressed for 7 o'clock muster then tells her to get a move on and leaves. Susan gets out of bed.

The women are in the Dining Room when Susan walks in. Bea tells her that she has saved her some breakfast. Doreen comments to Bea that she didn't say anything the night before. Bea tells her not to worry as they will make her. Susan sits down and thanks them. Bea tells her that the food isn't much but it won't kill her. Lizzie tells her that she can rely on it and Doreen tells her that she would know Bea tells her what Lizzie is in for and asks her what she is in for. Susan tells them that she is in for shoplifting and Doreen is surprised. Bea asks her if its her first time and she tells them that it is her third. Bea tells her that she is making a habit of it and that the screws will try and make her see the error of her ways if they get the chance. Bea warns her against Doreen as she is not as innocent as she may seem, she is a hardened criminal. Bea comments on the fact that she seems really quiet and Susan tells her that she wasn't in the mood for talking when she first came in. Bea asks her if they have been getting on her back and she seems confused. Bea tells her not to let the screws push her around and if she needs any help not to call on Lizzie.

Meg and Jean rush into reception and Vera is there and tells them that they are late as the prisoners are already at work. Jean tells her that they had a flat tyre and it was all her fault and apologises. Vera comments that they are very clean for having a flat tyre. Meg reminds Jean that she is seeing Susan Rice and Jean tells her that she has a hearing this morning, so Meg offers to go and get her. Vera comments on how lazy she is and tells them that she had to do a lot to get her moving on Meg's round. Jean praises Vera for what she did and they leave reception.

Later, Jean is talking to Susan in her office. Susan tells her that because of her previous convictions she will probably be sent to trial so they will just have to wait and see what happens. Jean tells her to contact her husband and she refuses. Jean tells her that she will have to tell him sooner or later and may as well get it out of the way. She picks the phone up and Susan tells her that she isn't calling him. Jean asks her if they are separated and she tells her that they aren't. Jean comments that he must be wondering where she is. Susan tells her that he is away a lot and isn't at home at the moment. Jean asks her what he does and she tells her that he is in entertainment. Jean asks her if he is an actor or a singer and she tells Jean that she has already had her phone call and isn't going to break the rules. Jean tells her that she can phone him and Susan tells her that she won't. Jean tells her that she might have to if she won't. Susan tells her that she will ring him if she leaves the room and Jean refuses, she then asks Jean to turn away while she dials the number. Jean turns away and Susan dials the number. She has a pleasant conversation with her husband about what has happened then puts the phone down and asks Jean if she is happy. Jean asks her what happened and Susan tells her that nothing happened. Jean asks her if he is going to come and see her and she tells him that he isn't. Jean asks her why he isn't coming to see her and she gets angry, telling Jean that he is too busy which is what she already told her and then asks her why she doesn't ever listen and storms out. Susan runs down the corridor and Meg tells her to stop and asks where she is going in such a hurry. Susan tells her that she is on her way back to her cell. Meg tells her that she has to go to court and that the police are waiting for her in reception. Susan tells her that she has some things in her cell that she needs to collect as she doesn't think she will be coming back. Meg tells her that that's all been taken care of and tells her that they are waiting for her in reception. Jean catches up with her and Susan thanks her for her help. She tells Meg that she can find her own way out and walks off. Jean tells Meg is angry that Meg just lets her walk off and Meg tells her that she can't lost on the way to reception. Jean tells her to make Susan come and see her again when she gets back and Meg tells her that she probably wont be back as she is bound to get bail. Jean asks her how that's possible as she had just spoken to her husband and he didn't seem interested. Meg tells her that Susan's mother is going to be at the trial and then tells her that she has to go and see Greg to get something for her hangover.

Meg is searching through a drawer in the surgery when Greg asks if he can be of any help. Meg asks him to get her a new head. He gives her some aspirin. Meg tells Greg what happened when they arrived late for work. Greg asks if there is anything going on between Jean and Steve and Meg tells her that she doesn't know of anything. Meg tells him that Jean thinks he is a good lawyer and that she is not to ask her anything else. Greg asks her to do it for him.

Jean is in her office when Greg walks in and comments that she has had a busy day. Jean tells him that she cant work Susan Rice out as she isn't stupid but has had no support from her husband and has paid her own bail and been released before her trial which means that she doesn't need to steal. Greg tells her that is probably bored and Jean thinks that she is hiding her husband from her. She tells Greg that she has Susan's mothers address and that might help. Greg asks if he seems a bit strange. Jean tells him that she doesn't know all that much about him, other than that he is an entertainer. She asks Greg if Susan was the same with him when she was receiving her medical. Greg tells her that he is only a doctor and then asks her why she is as worried as she won't be seeing her again. Jean tells him that she has a feeling that she will be back. Greg invites her out for lunch and she accepts, telling him that she is too busy to go but will another day. Greg leaves, commenting that she is always so dedicated to her work, the phone rings and Jean tells whoever is on the other end that she is on her way.

Later Jean arrives at a house and rings the doorbell. Susan's mother answers the door and Jean talks to her about Susan. Jean is concerned that Susan hasn't contacted her and she tells her that Mrs Davidson rang on her behalf. Jean asks her if she has heard from her since and Susan's mother disagrees. She asks Jean if anything is wrong and Jean tells her that Susan was released on bail earlier that day and she thought that Susan might have contacted her. Jean tells her that she might be with her husband and Susan's mother disagrees, telling Jean that he sent her a letter containing an application for divorce 3 months ago and they haven't seen him since.

The phone rings in reception as Meg is leaving, the receptionist asks her to wait until she is admitted. Meg tells her that she will and a police officer brings Susan Rice into the prison.

Meg is showing Susan to her cell and is disgusted with her for being back in prison only 5 hours after she was released on bail. Meg asks her why she so intent on giving up her freedom and she doesn't say anything. Meg locks her in her cell, telling her that the lights will go out at 10pm. Susan opens a drawer in the bedside table and sees a picture of her husband in a magazine and rips it up into tiny pieces.

Anne Yates' party is in full swing later that night. Anne is telling one of the guests all about what Vera is like. She comments that Vera was probably making a bit on the side herself but not in drugs. The man asks Anne if Vera knows anything about their operation and Anne tells him that she hasn't told her anything. Anne tells him that she thinks he should meet Vera as from what she can gather she's dissatisfied with her own lifestyle as well as her job and might be a possibility.

The doorbell rings and Anne opens the door to Vera who apologises for being late. Anne tells her that she will get her a drink and then introduce her to everyone. Anne introduces her to George Lucas and he pours her a scotch. Vera comments on Anne's flat being so nice and George thanks her for the compliment. Anne explains that George is her landlord and he owns the whole block. Anne asks George if there are any vacancies and George tells them that there is a flat empty on the third floor. Vera tells them that she couldn't afford it and George tells her that they could come to an arrangement as she is friend. Vera thanks him and smiles.

Meg arrives home and Jean is cooking. She tells Meg that she needs help with it all. Meg looks in a pan and asks her what the contents are supposed to be and she tells her that it's spaghetti and that next time she will be making a sandwich. Meg tells her that she is pleased neither of her boyfriends Greg or Steve are coming for dinner as they would both be out of the flat very quickly. Jean is surprised and Meg tells her that she has heard that Jean is stringing them both along. Jean tells her that she thinks Steve Wilson is a pig and hands her the starter. Meg sits down with it and looks at it with disgust. Jean sits down and tells her to eat it and then comments that she didn't think Meg would have been back so late. Meg tells her that Susan Rice is back in prison. Jean can't believe it, telling Meg that she is a bit odd; Meg comments that she seems normal enough, a calm and quiet person. Jean tells her she is one minute and then she changes the next minute.

At Anne's party, Vera and George are getting to know each other, Anne offers them some food and they both decline. She walks off with it. George asks her about Wentworth and comments that it must be a tough, lonely job. Vera tells him that it is and that there is a feeling of being isolated as she doesn't get on with the other members of staff as they think she is too hard on the women. Vera comments that she doesn't see how else a prison can be run as they dealing with hardened, violent women. She goes on to say that Erica is unsuitable as Governor and Meg thinks that she is working for the Salvation Army. George agrees with her. Vera tells her that if she had her way then tells him that even as Deputy Governor, she doesn't get her way, she is powerless. George tells her that her time will come and comments on the perfume she is wearing. Vera smiles. George asks her to dance and she accepts.

The next morning, Susan is still asleep. The bell rings and Meg opens the door, telling her that she should move faster. Susan asks her if she can have something to do whilst she is in prison and Meg tells her that they always need help in the laundry and that she will speak to the Governor. Meg walks off down the corridor and Susan collects the things she needs to take to the shower block.

In the laundry Bea is working hard, as are the other women, Doreen, however, is reading the paper. Bea notices and tells her that she could do with a hand when she has finished reading the paper. Doreen complains that she never gets to read the paper and everyone else does. Bea tells her that they are quicker at getting to it than she is. Meg brings Susan into the laundry and tells Bea that she can assign her to where she will be most useful. Meg leaves the laundry. Bea shows her to the sewing machine and tells her that she has a pile of mending to do. Susan tells her that isn't very good but Bea tells her that it doesn't have to be perfect. Doreen reads an article to Lizzie about Jason Richards starring in a new TV show. Susan looks annoyed. Bea asks her who Jason Richards and Doreen tells her that she is great. Susan tells her that he is vile and Doreen comments on how beautiful he is and Susan snaps, telling her never to say that again. Susan lunges at Doreen and Bea drags her away, telling Doreen to put the paper away.

Vera walks in and tells Susan that Jean wants to see her. Bea tells Vera that she has only just arrived and Vera tells Bea that she is following instructions and asks Susan to follow her. Susan follows Vera out and Bea comments that Vera must have had sex the night before as she was being so pleasant. Doreen tells them that she doesn't believe it as no-one would have her. Bea comments that there is someone for everyone in the world and that she is only starting to believe it.

Jean is talking to Susan in her office. Jean tells her that she can't understand why she broke her own bail and didn't go home instead. Jean asks her what is stopping her from going home and asks her if it's because her husband is divorcing her. Susan tells her that it isn't true and Jean tells her that it is and she knows it. Susan tells her that it is his work that keeps him away from home and Jean tells her that she doesn't believe her as he hasn't been living with her for 3 months. Susan asks how the children are and Jean tells her that she didn't see them. Susan tells her that she misses them and Jean asks her why she did what she did if she misses them. She goes on to tell Susan that she is going to contact her husband whether she likes it or not. Susan smiles.

Meg is in reception when Jean walks in and asks her if she has seen Susan Rice. Meg tells her that she has and that she seems much better and that she has asked for work and has been put in the laundry. Jean tells her that she has been really strange with her and Meg tells her that she is imagining things. Jean tells her that she isn't, as she didn't want her to have anything to do with her husband and then she tells her that she is contacting her husband whether she likes it or not and Susan looks really pleased. Jean tells Meg that Susan might need psychological help. Meg asks her what for and Jean tells her that she doesn't know, but she does know that kleptomania is a psychological state. Jean leaves as Vera walks into reception. Meg takes a call for Vera and tells her that it's a personal call from Anne Yates. Vera thanks Anne for the party and she tells her that George is taking her out for lunch. Anne tells her that she is delighted and to call her and tell her all about it. Then she ends the phone call. Meg asks Vera what Anne Yates wanted and Vera tells her that it's none of her business. Meg reminds her that they are not supposed to socialise with ex prison officers who have been dismissed over malpractice. Vera tells her that Yates wasn't dismissed as she resigned. Meg tells her that she did that before she was sacked. Vera tells her that she can think what she likes and she would appreciate it if she didn't pry into her personal life and leaves reception.

Vera tells her that Yates wasn't dismissed as she resigned. Meg tells her that she did that before she was sacked. Vera tells her that she can think what she likes and she would appreciate it if she didn't pry into her personal life and leaves reception.

George and Vera are having lunch, George gets Vera to try a new drink and he tells her that a friend from Capri recommended it to him and she needs to be careful as it's quite strong. Vera tells him that he seems to have been everywhere and that she would to travel. George asks her where she would like to go and she tells him that she would like to go anywhere as she hasn't even been to Tasmania. Vera tells him that she has thought about it but would need lots of money to do as it wouldn't be too much fun hitch hiking, she tells him that she would like to travel in style but it wouldn't be much fun travelling alone either. George tells her that it isn't difficult to meet people and she comments that it is for her and knocks her drink back. Vera tells him that she felt relieved when her mother died as she was a difficult woman to live with. She tells him that she misses her sometimes. George tells her that she is a unique lady and Vera comments that she talks too much. George tells her that he likes listening. Vera invites him round to her place for dinner and he accepts. He lights a cigarette for her and she comments on how beautiful his lighter is. He gives it to her as a present and she tells him that she couldn't accept it. Vera tells him that it's too beautiful. George tells her that if she doesn't take it he won't come to dinner. She thanks him for the lighter.

Jean is sat on the desk in reception as Meg is sat at it, she is reading the paper. Vera walks in smiling and signs on. Jean tells her that she is late and asks her if she had a flat tyre and smiles. Vera leaves again without saying a word. Meg and Jean laugh.

In the recroom, Bea and some of the women are playing cards. Bea tells them to deal again as she is on a winning streak and Doreen disagrees. Bea tells her that she used to beat all the people she played down at her local pub on a Friday night. Lizzie, stood behind them, tries to sneak a look at her hand and Bea notices. Bea tells her to move as she giving the other signals. Lizzie tells her that isn't but then comments on how bad the next card is that Bea picks up. Doreen tells them to shut up as she is watching TV and Bea tells Lizzie to go and bother someone else. Doreen tells them to shut up again and turns the volume up on the TV. Bea tells her to turn it down. The announcer introduces Jason Richards and Susan gets up and unplugs the TV set and runs out. Doreen comments that she has broken the TV and calls her a moron. Bea comments that Susan must be mad.

Meg is walking down the corridor when Susan runs into her and then into her cell. Meg follows her then asks her what's wrong as she lies on her bed. Susan screams that she is going to get him. Meg tells her to stop it then asks her what has happened. Susan tells her that no one is going to want him and that he has ruined her life. Meg asks her what she is talking about. Susan tells her that Jason Richards is the reason why she doesn't have a husband or her children don't have a father. Meg asks her if he works for him and Susan tells her that he does everything for him as well as working for him, he lives and breathes him day in day out. Lizzie has listened to every word and runs back to the recroom.

In the recroom Bea works out that Susan's husband is Jason Richards' boyfriend. Doreen tells her that she doesn't believe it. Lizzie tells her that it can't be right as he has children with Susan. Bea tells her that it doesn't matter as it has happened before. She then asks Doreen what she thinks about Jason Richards preferring blokes to young ladies. Doreen tells her that it isn't true. Bea tells Doreen to grow up.

Anne is wrapping up a package when the doorbell rings. She hides it in a tea towel and answers the door. Vera walks in and tells her that she hopes she hasn't come at an awkward time. Anne tells her that she is pleased to see her and asks her if everything is alright. Vera tells her that she has come to tell her how lunch went with George. Anne invites her in and tells her to sit down. Anne pours her a drink and Vera tells her that it went really well, apart from the fact that she talked too much, telling him her life story. Vera tells her that she hasn't ever met anyone like him as he has done so much and yet seemed really interested in what's happened to her. She tells Anne that she was scared that he would have been bored. Anne comments that he seems to have been taken by her. Vera shows her the lighter he gave her as a present. Vera comments that he can't afford to give her expensive presents like it and Anne tells her not to worry as he can afford all the gold lighters he wants. Vera tells her that he must earn a fortune and asks what he does. She comments that Anne knows and asks why it is such a secret. Anne tells Vera that when George started out he didn't have any money and no formal education and now he is a millionaire, being tough and clever with very few enemies. Vera asks again what George does and Anne tells her that she works for him and did so when she was at the prison.
