Episode Details

Jean is on the phone to Steve as Meg enters, she is clearly annoyed as she puts the phone down and Meg asks her what the problem is; Jean tells her that Susan Rice’s husband has been granted custody of their children and that she has been in one court charged with shoplifting and then had to go to another to have her children taken away from her. Meg tells her that they thought it would happen and Jean agrees. Jean tells Meg to make her own way home as she is going to visit Susan’s mother much to Meg’s disappointment. Jean tells her to phone Greg to cancel their dinner date.

Anne is walking down the corridor and is met by two of the women, luckily for her Vera is walking down the same corridor from the other end and tells the two women to carry on walking. Ann tells her that the women, including Bea, know why she inside as she had Ann’s file. Vera tells her that Bea probably knew all along and now must know for sure. The dinner bell goes and Vera tells Anne to go to the Dining Room like everyone else. Ann asks her who is on dinner duty and Vera tells her that she is.

The women are waiting outside the Dining Room and Doreen tells Bea to calm down as she might hurt herself. Bea tells her that she wont be the one getting hurt. Lizzie warns her that she will have every officer in the building looking after her so there is no point in getting angry. Bea asks her whose side she is on and Lizzie tells her that she is on her side. Doreen assures Bea that they are all on her side and Bea tells her that they had better be because if they aren’t then they are on the side of the officers and worse.

Monica walks up to them and wonders why they haven’t gone in for lunch. Bea tells her about Anne just as Vera brings her to the Dining Room. Vera tells them all to get inside and is taunted by Monica as they start to walk into the Dining Room. Bea tells Vera not to snap at Anne as she knows the rules and Anne agrees as Bea walks into the Dining Room. Vera tells Anne to go inside.

The women sit down and taunt Anne as she sits down to eat her meal. Monica asks Bea what she is going to do to Anne and Bea tells her that she would like to kill her or something as equally slow and painful. Bea tells Monica that they are out of salt and walks over to Anne’s table, threatens her and then empties the salt pot over her food and then walks back to her table. Vera tells Anne to get another meal.

Jean arrives at Susan’s house; her mother answers the door and asks if there is anything she can do. Her mother tells her that Susan and the children have left. Jean asks her where Susan has gone and she tells her that she doesn’t know. Jean asks her why Mr Rice didn’t collect the children himself and she tells Jean that he had some TV show to do and had to be there. Jean asks her if Susan would have gone to the TV station and her mother tells her that she doesn’t know.

The women are leaving the Dining Room and Doreen and Lizzie argue about what they are watching on TV. Anne and Bea are still sat down and Vera tells Bea to leave. Bea comments that the officers really stick together. Vera tells her to get moving. Bea asks her if she knows what Anne is in for and Vera tells her that she does but asks her how she found out. Bea leaves, laughing. Anne gets up and tells Vera that it is just going to go on. Vera asks her what she should do and Anne tells her to jump on them as Bea is desperate to have a go at her and has got all of the women on side. Vera tells her that she knows and Anne tells her that if anything happens to her there will be a few people who will be very sorry. Anne asks Vera to get her a knife or something that she can use to protect herself. Vera tells her that she can’t do it and she knows it and then assures her that nothing will happen to her as the officers will be looking out for her as it’s their job. Anne isn’t convinced and Vera snaps, telling her that she got herself put inside. Anne tells her that she is supposed to be looking after her and has been useless so far.

Vera locks Anne in her cell and Anne tells her that she might as well be in solitary. Vera tells her that she is safe and asks her what she has done with the file. Anne asks her what she is going to do with it and Vera tells her that she is going to put it back where it belongs. Anne tells her it was stolen by Bea and that she should be her in solitary for stealing. Vera tells her that the women would then hate her even more for lagging on Bea. Anne asks about George and Vera tells her that he has left town.

Lizzie and Doreen argue over what to watch on TV and take a vote, Doreen wins and they have to watch Jason Richards. Doreen is delighted and both Bea and Monica tell her to shut up. Martha walks into the recroom and tells Bea that Vera has locked Anne in her cell. Bea tells her that Anne still has to eat, wash and go to the toilet. Vera walks in and tells them that they can relax as she is going off duty. The women taunt Vera over her friendship and protection of Anne. Vera sends Lizzie back to her cell as she has been denied all privileges and then leaves. Doreen sits down to watch Jason Richards.

Jean walks into the flat and Meg is watching the Tonight Show with Jason Richards. Jean tells Meg about her day and Meg notices Susan in the audience. They both wonder why she is there and watch the interview. Susan gets up out of her seat in the audience and throws acid in Jason’s face. Bea comments that Susan will be back inside the next day.

Vera arrives home to an empty flat and George has let himself in. He tells her that he has come back because he has missed her and tells her to sit down and he will get her a drink. He asks about Anne and she tells him about what has happened and tells him that she can’t do anything about it. Vera tells her that one of the prisoners would definitely kill Anne as she is already in for murder.

The women taunt Anne during the night.

The next morning, Meg is getting the women out of bed and walks into Anne’s cell and persuades her to get to the shower block. As Anne walks out of her cell, Bea and Monica are waiting and Meg tells them to move. They taunt Anne even more as they walk down the corridor.

Vera is late for work. George tells her to watch over Anne as she leaves.

The women are in the Dining Room. Meg is watching over them and Lizzie wonders why Vera hasn’t arrived and then comments on how scared Anne looks. Monica gets up and walks into Anne’s table with Bea right behind her. Anne tells Meg to do something and Meg tells them both to sit down as the bell goes and Vera walks in, telling them all to get to work. Meg tells Bea that she knows how she feels but warns her that if she does any more she will end up in solitary and Vera tells them that Monica will too and tells them both to get out. Anne slips a knife under her jumper and leaves. Meg tells Vera that her friend isn’t very popular and Vera tells her that they aren’t friends.

Outside, Lynn is leaving for work and meets Erica who asks her if everything is alright. Lynn tells her that it is and Erica tells her that she needs to get moving or she will be late.

The women are listening to the news about Jason Richards on the radio. Doreen tells her that she is going to kill Susan for what she did to Jason. Monica tells her that she will be able too as the brought Susan in during the night and has gone mad.

Susan is in solitary, talking to Jean about Jason Richards. Susan tells Jean that she meant to hurt Jason. She tells her that she did it so that Freddy would pay more attention to her. Meg walks in with Susan’s meal and Susan tells her that she will need to start packing soon as Freddy is coming to pick her up with the children. Meg shows Jean a newspaper; Freddy and Jason are the same person. They leave Susan’s cell and Jean asks her why they didn’t tell her that they were the same person. Meg tells her that no-one knew and that he thought having a wife and children held him back so he changed his name and image. Jean tells her that he was leading a double life and that Susan eventually saw him as two different people. Jean is furious that no-one would listen to her or do anything. Meg tells her that Susan will probably end up in a mental home.

Lynn is at work. Sid reminisces about the war and her parents. Lynn’s Dad was a Sergeant and good at his job. He was at her parents wedding and her Mum has always been a really nice person. Sid tells her that she will be alright if she puts the effort into her work. Lynn tells him that she wants to do something on her own for a change without being watched over by her parents. Sid tells her to serve a customer.

Anne is in the garden being supervised by Vera. Anne complains about the work and Vera asks her if she would prefer to be in the laundry. Meg comes out to give Vera a break. Vera tells her what happened with Anne and Meg suggests transferring her to another block. Vera tells her that it wouldn’t make any difference and that they are in charge, not the women. Joyce comes out and tells Vera that the Governor wants to see her and she goes inside. Joyce comments on Vera and Anne’s relationship. Anne tells Meg that she needs the toilet and Meg lets her go, as she walks back into the prison two of the women walk past her, then follow her back inside. Meg sees this and rushes after her.

Erica is questioning Vera over the discovery of Anne’s file. Vera explains that the women resent them as officers which is why there have been so many incidents involving Anne and the other women.

Meg finds Anne in her cell and Anne asks to be locked in her cell. Meg refuses. Meg tells her that she will be treated like anyone else, as she is just another prisoner. Meg escorts Anne to the Governor’s office, telling her that she might be able to transfer her. As they are walking down the corridor, Joyce is walking with Susan Rice, Doreen sees her and then starts a fight with her. Meg helps to break it up and Anne walks down the corridor. She is grabbed from behind and thrown into a cell with Bea and Monica. Bea tells Monica to look out for the screws and starts fighting with Anne. Anne stabs Bea with the knife and then runs off down the corridor. She runs into the laundry and hides. Monica shouts for help. Vera and Meg rush into the cell and Monica tells them what happened. Vera tells her that she was probably defending herself. Vera tells Meg that they will lock the women in and will sound the alarm. She tells Monica to get back to her cell. Monica leaves.

Doreen and some of the women walk into the laundry and Vera walks in after them, closing one of the drier doors. She tells them to get to their cells as she carries on searching for Anne.

The officers are telling Erica what happened. Vera tells her that they haven’t found Anne anywhere. Erica enquires about Bea and Meg tells her that Greg is going to contact them with any news. Erica asks for a policewoman to supervise Bea. Vera tells Erica that she is going to carry on looking for Anne as she might be dead. Erica tells her to stay calm as Anne knows the prison as well as they do.

Lynn is helped by Geoff, Sid’s son to move some compost. He offers to help her further and she agrees. Sid appears and tells Geoff to put down the compost as Lynn is being paid to work. Lynn walks off and Geoff asks about Lynn.

Doreen and Monica are shouting to each other from their cells about where they think Anne is. Meg walks past Monica’s cell and Monica asks about Bea. Meg tells her that she doesn’t know anything and Monica tells her that Anne should be in solitary for what she did. Meg tells her to mind her own business and walks off. Monica tells the women in her cell that Anne must have escaped as the officers don’t know where she is.

Sid is talking to Geoff when Lynn appears and tells Sid that she is leaving to catch the bus. Geoff offers to give her a lift and Lynn tells him that she will be alright as it’s a long way. Sid asks him if he likes her and Geoff tells him that she is alright. Sid tells him to leave her alone and when Geoff asks him why he changes the subject. He asks her if she is married and Sid tells him that she is a widow. He then tells Geoff that Lynn is a criminal and is doing 12 months for armed hold up as she drove the car.

Vera is out in the prison grounds looking for Anne, Meg and Joyce are doing the same on the inside. Vera is then telling Erica about what happened when Meg walks in and tells them that they can’t find Anne. Vera looks worried.
