PREVIOUSLY.....

Ann gets a phonecall in her office. Afterwards she tells Meg that their problems are just about to start again. Cynthia Leach is starting at Wentworth from tomorrow. Meg looks horrified.

Merle pokes her head round the shower block door and sees Lisa throwing up in the toilet.

Helen tastes some of her new home-made 'grog' in the reward cell, and smiles.

Meg and Delia are doing paperwork in reception:

Delia: Oh I bet you had a good holiday Meg. I'd love to go to Florida.

Meg: Yes it was wonderful. Although, one day back here and I feel like I've never been away.

Delia: You're not happy about all these changes they're making here, are you?

Meg: No I'm not. It goes against everything Ann's worked for years to achieve. All those new reforms she fought for, well they'll be out of the window now.

Delia: Will we be like Blackmoor?

Meg: Not if I've got anything to do with it, it won't. And not while Ann's got any breath left in her body. I really hope she gets this head of department job, at least it will be run fairly then. Depending on who gets the governorship here of course.

Delia: Will you apply?

Meg: I think I'll have to. If it stops people like Cynthia Leach getting it. I can't believe they're allowing that woman to come to Wentworth. I mean we just get rid of Ferguson and we get another one ten times worse!

Delia: Is she really that bad?

Meg: She makes Joan Ferguson look like Joyce Pringle.

(Delia laughs)

Delia: I can just imagine Joan Ferguson in Joyce's glasses.

(Meg starts to chuckle)

Meg: Oh it just makes me wonder why we all bother really.

Delia: Let's talk about something nicer. Tell me more about your holiday. Did your friend, Colleen isn't it?, Did she have a good wedding? What's her new husband like?

Meg: Graham? He's really nice. I'm really glad she's found someone at last. She's so happy. She even asked me to stay in Florida with her.

Delia: What? I'd have snapped up her offer.

Meg: Well don't think I wasn't tempted, but I just don't know what I'd do over there. I'm not the type to be sunning myself all day. I need something like this place to keep me sane.

Delia
(chuckles): You'll be here till you retire Meg.

Meg: I wouldn't bet on it. This place has been my life for longer than I care to remember now, but I'm starting to think there's got to be more to life than....

(Suddenly a police escort enters reception with 2 new inmates. Meg and Delia look in amazement and then look at each other. They are identical twins.......)

Episode 751

Meg inducts the new twins, Cindy and Roslyn Simpson - they are both 21. Cindy is really loud and outspoken, and Ros is really quiet - she barely says a word. They are in for shoplifting, so are only in for a couple of weeks. Delia can only watch in bemusement.

Ann interviews the twins and welcomes them to Wentworth. She tells them they can share a cell. Cindy is really cocky and tells Ann that she won't let anybody tell them what to do. Ros just keeps her head down and nods when Ann talks to her.

Meg takes the twins to their new cell and tells them to make their beds. When she has gone Cindy sits down and lights up a fag.

Cindy: I think we're going to have it really easy here.

Ros: We'd better make our beds. They could come back to check.

Cindy: You worry too much. What's the worst they can do?

(Lisa enters the room)

Lisa: Hey what have we here? Twins? You 2 just arrived?

Cindy: What's it to you?

Lisa: Hey I was only being friendly. This could be just the story I need for The Stir.

(She goes up to Ros)

Lisa: Are you interested in doing an interview for the prison paper?

Cindy
(butts in): No she isn't.

Lisa: Can't she speak for herself?

Cindy: Why don't you rack off?

Lisa: Fine have it your way. Learn the hard way then.

(Lisa leaves the cell)

Ros: What did she mean by that? Oh you shouldn't have been aggressive towards her, I don't want any trouble.

Cindy: Don't you worry about them. We've never needed no-one else. Never have, never will.

Ros: But she seemed nice.

(Cindy puts her fist close to Roslyn's face)

Cindy: I said no-one!!

Most of the other women are in the recroom. Kath is playing 'snap' with Merle, while discussing Wally.

Merle: Wally said I'm getting really good, and he really likes me too.

Kath: That's brilliant Merle. You know he's only your teacher though don't you.

Merle: Snap!
(chuckles)

Kath: Oh you got me again. Seriously Merle, I don't want you getting too attached to Wally. I'd hate to see you get hurt.

Merle: I won't get hurt Kath. Wally and me are going to get married.

Kath: Merle!! He didn't say that to you, did he? You've got to get that idea right out of your head now.......

(Lisa comes in)

Lisa: Guess what we've landed ourselves, a couple of identical twins.

Kath: You're joking? Have you seen them?

Lisa: Too right I have. Right up 'emselves too they are.

Brumby: You'll sort them out won't you Kath?

Kath: What do you want me to do, Bash them? Give them a chance to find their feet for God's sake.

Brumby: So you're not going to do anything?

Helen: Give her a chance Brumby. They're probably just scared.

Kath: Helen's right. I'll have a talk to them later.

Lisa: Well I'm just telling you. One of them won't say boo to a goose but the other one is a spoilt mouthy cow.

Merle: I'm going to go and say hello.
(she gets up and goes flying out - almost knocking over Pat Slattery)

Pat: Careful Merle. You'll hurt someone one of these days.

Kath: Yeah herself if she's not careful.

Lisa: What?

Kath: Oh I'll tell you about it over tea.

Merle is told where to go by Cindy, and leaves the cell in tears. Roslyn tells Cindy that she liked Merle and feels sorry for her. Kath enters the cell.

Kath: What did you say to Merle, I just saw her crying outside?

Cindy: I just told your retard mate I didn't want to read her comic that was all.

Ros: Cindy, don't.

Cindy: Oh shut up you, you're too soft.

Kath: Well I'm going to teach you a lesson you won't forget. Nobody upsets Merle and gets away with it.

(Kath goes over to them, and Cindy pulls out a knife)

Cindy: Come anywhere near us and I'll slice your head off.

Kath: You stupid girl. Give that to me now.

(Kath holds out her hand and Cindy slashes it)

Kath: Ow, you bitch. You're going to be very sorry you did that.

(Kath leaves the cell)

Kath goes back to the recroom and tells Lisa (who is busy writing an article for 'The Stir') that Cindy slashed her hand with a knife - she has bandaged it up with some old material. Lisa tells her she'd better get it seen to, but Kath explains she can't do that without lagging. Kath says they have to get that knife off her before she does any real damage though.

Meg is in Ann's office. They are discussing Ann's application for head of department. The minister has told her that she has a very good chance of getting the job, but Ann is worried about who will get the Wentworth job.

Ann: Cynthia Leech is back tomorrow and I'd hate to see her get the job.

Meg: Surely they wouldn't give the job to someone like that.

Ann: They gave it to Joan, and Murphy.

Meg: Well I'll apply naturally, but I think Vera will apply, probably Jim too.

Ann: Well if one of you get it then I shouldn't have to worry. Naturally I'd prefer you to get it though Meg.

Meg: Well we'll see. When do the workmen start the rennovations on the place?

Ann: Tomorrow. There's no way we can hide them from the women, so they'll have to be told something.

Meg: Well Maxwell's not stupid. She'll know something's going on.

Ann: Yes. I'm hoping we won't have to tell them the full story yet though. By the way, the reward cell will be out of bounds.

Meg: That will be the end of that I suppose.

Ann: Along with all the other reforms I've achieved. Oh Damn the department, I've got a good mind to just resign.

Meg: If you do that, then it does leave the way open for people like Cynthia and Rodney.

(telephone rings)

Ann: Ann Reynolds.....What?....Oh my God....When....Ok...Thank you.

Meg: Whatever's happened?

Ann: Joan Ferguson has escaped from prison!

During tea, Kath and Lisa go through Cindy's belongings and find the knife. Kath tells Lisa to go and hide it in the reward cell 'for now'.

Lisa goes to the reward cell and goes to hide the knife in a kitchen cupboard, when she notices a strange smell. She investigates and finds a bucket of home-made grog. Lisa can't believe her eyes.

Kath goes back to the dining room and whispers to Cindy that her knife has been removed for health and safety reasons. Cindy calls her a bitch, then Kath says she hasn't forgotten the one she owes her and knocks her bowl of hot soup in her lap. Cindy cries out in pain, Joyce Pringle rushes over and Kath makes out it was an accident. Cindy tells her it was no accident but Joyce just tells her to get herself cleaned up and go and see the sister. Ros gets up to follow her out but Kath grabs her and tells her to finish her meal. Lisa rushes into the recroom and whispers to Kath that there is a bucket of home-made booze in the reward cell.

Kath: What?? What have you done with it?

Lisa: Well nothing, I thought I'd tell you first.

Kath: Well I'm going to find out who's responsible for it. Their stupidity could get the flat shut down.

(Helen comes over)

Helen: What are you 2 talking about?

Kath: What do you think we're talking about then?

Helen
(looks shifty): I don't know.

Lisa: It was you wasn't it. Don't you realise we could lose everything, just for a bit of cheap home-made plonk!

Kath: Well Helen's going to get rid of it, aren't you Helen?

(Helen nods. Joyce comes over.)

Joyce: Lisa. I've finished my article for the next issue of 'The Stir'. When do you want it?

Lisa: Whenever you like. I'm still struggling with mine.

Merle: You could write about me and Wally getting.....

Kath
(hastily interrupts): What did you write about Mrs. Pringle?

Joyce: Well it's an article on gardening. Oh dear I do hope it's interesting enough.

Kath: I'm sure it will be wonderful.

Joyce: Oh, and Mervin's done some more of his own recipes too, for his cookery column.

Lisa: Excellent. Now I just need to get mine sorted out.

Merle: Are you better now Lisa?

Lisa: Better Merle? What do you mean?

Merle: Well I saw you being sick in the toilet block this morning.

Lisa: Oh...that. That was nothing.

(Lisa shuts up and Kath looks at her)

Ann calls Kath to her office. Rodney escorts her, and taunts her on the way saying the picnic will soon be over. In the office, Ann tells Rodney she wants to speak to Kath alone.

Kath: Is there any news on Rita?

Ann: No nothing yet. Sit down Maxwell.

Kath: If it's about the accident in the dining room then I've already apologised....

Ann: It's not that, Maxwell..... What have you done to your hand?

Kath: Oh it's just a cut. I caught it on a nail in the shop.

Ann: Well you should see the sister, it could be infected.

Kath: Oh I'll be alright. What did you want to see me about Mrs. Reynolds?

Ann: Well it's 2 things. First the twins, how are they settling in?

Kath: Not good. I get the feeling we could get through to Ros, if Cindy wasn't talking for her all the time.

Ann: That was the impression I got too. What would you suggest?

Kath: Split them up. Put Ros in with Lisa, and Cindy in a different block. Then we can teach Ros to stand on her own two feet, and not rely on her sister all the time.

Ann: Yes that could work. I'm afraid Cindy will have to stay in H Block for now though, there just isn't the room anywhere else. We'll keep them apart as much as possible though, one can work in the laundry and the other can go on cleaning detail.

Kath: That solves that. What was the other thing?

Ann: Yes. Well, we're having a few rennovations made to the place so there will be workmen swarming the place as of tomorrow. I'm telling you this because I want your word that there will be no trouble.

Kath: I'll see that everyone behaves. What are they doing?

Ann: Just a few essential repairs. I'm afraid your movement within the prison will be restricted while this is going on. The reward cell and the shop will be out of bounds, and all security gates will have to be kept locked.

Kath: The women won't like that. How are we supposed to get our supplies?

Ann: We'll be reverting to the old buy-up system for the time being.

Kath: Well that won't go down too well. How long will it be for?

Ann: I'm afraid I can't answer that Maxwell.

Kath goes back to the recroom and tells them the news. They don't like the sound of it but are quite excited by the thought of workmen in the prison. Kath reminds them that nobody is to try anything with the workmen.

Brumby: I wonder if that other one will be back, Roy wasn't it? You remember him don't you Lisa, you and him had a thing going.

Lisa: We never had a thing going. We were just mates. I knew him on the outside.

Kath: Lisa wouldn't be silly enough to risk all our privileges by having it off with a workman, would you Lisa?
(looks at her suspiciously)

Merle: What were you doing in the cupboard together?

Lisa: I wasn't. Merle, shut up.

Kath: You stupid fool Lisa. You're pregnant aren't you?

Lisa: No!

Kath: Well how come Merle, Tina and Ronnie have all seen you being sick at different times? and you were always hanging around him.

Lisa: Oh all right. So I'm pregnant. What's the big deal?

Kath: You idiot. Do the screws know?

Lisa: No!

Kath: Well how are you going to explain it to them?

Lisa: I don't know yet.

Kath: Well you'd better think of something. We're not losing all our privileges just because you couldn't keep your knickers on!

Roslyn is moved in with Lisa, despite fierce protest from Cindy. Rodney tells her she's quite capable of looking after herself. Cindy demands to see the governor but is told she'll have to wait until morning. Cindy warns Lisa if she tries anything on Ros then she'll be sorry. Lisa tells her she's shaking.

After lock-up, Lisa tries to get Ros talking, but Ros isn't saying much. Lisa sarcastically tells her to stop talking as she wants to get to sleep.

Next morning on the way to the showers, Lisa tells Kath that there's no way she can get through to Ros, and she's not sure she wants to anyway. Kath tells her to keep trying, and while she's at it to find a way to solve her other problem. Lisa goes on in front, Kath passes Amanda's cell and tells her she'd better get up. Amanda says she's feeling crook but Kath tells her to just get up as she doesn't want the screws down on them.

Cynthia Leach signs on for the first time at Wentworth. Joyce is there to welcome her, she tells her that the governor wants to speak to her before she starts.

Cynthia: Then take me to your leader.

Joyce: Right let's go.

Cynthia: I can see I'm going to really enjoy myself here.

Ann welcomes Cynthia to Wentworth, but she does explain to her that this isn't Blackmoor, so there's no need for any real harsh treatment.

Cynthia: I take it you want the prisoners to be disciplined if they fall out of line?

Ann: Of course! But I've worked hard to achieve a friendly working relationship between the prisoners and officers. I won't have anyone coming in and destroying all that.

Cynthia: With all due respect governor you don't know me.

Ann: I know all about you though. I know what happened to Rebecca Kean could never be proved but I've got my eye on you. The first sign of trouble and I'll have you removed.

Cynthia: Looks like Joan was right about you.

Ann: And look what happened to her! Well that's all we'll say about it for the time being. Mrs. Pringle will show you around. That will be all for now.

Cynthia: I'll look forward to more of these chats. Governor!

(Cynthia leaves the room and Ann lets out a deep sigh)

(There's a knock on the door and Marty enters)

Marty: I've got Mullins outside governor. She insists it's important.

Ann: OK bring her in.

(Marty tells Lisa to come in)

Ann: Now Mullins, what's all this about?

Lisa: Do I have to have Ros in my cell? She doesn't say a word.

Ann: Well she's new, give her a chance. Was that all you wanted to see me about? I am very busy.

Lisa: No there was something else.

Marty: Come on Mullins, spit it out.

Lisa: I'm pregnant.

(Ann has a look of shock on her face).

Lisa is back in her cell. Kath walks in and asks her if she's told Mrs. Reynolds yet. Lisa says she has, but she wouldn't tell her who the father was so she has taken her off the paper until she talks. Lisa is furious but Kath tells her she only has herself to blame. Cindy walks into the cell and tells Lisa not to try talking to Ros or she'll be sorry. Lisa loses her rag and punches Cindy, telling her to get out of her sight. Kath tells Lisa she shouldn't have done that.

Cindy finds Ros and tells her they're going to get their own back on Lisa. Cindy whispers to Ros what they're going to do. Ros: No, I'm not doing it.

Cindy (grabs Ros's hair): Oh you'll do it. You know you will.

The women are now at work in the laundry. Merle is working the press while Kath is sat at the sewing machine writing an article for the prison paper about contraception. Lisa scorns her. Brumby tries talking to Amanda.

Brumby: You don't say much do ya?

Amanda: I mind my own business. Perhaps you should give it a try.

Brumby: Ooh get little miss up herself. You're just a common criminal like the rest of us, lady.

Amanda: I'm nothing like you. I'm not stupid for a start.

Brumby: What did you say?

Kath: That will do. I'm trying to think.

Amanda: Well she started it.

Kath: And I'm finishing it.

Brumby: Credit card fraud. You must think we were born yesterday. You're a cop aren't you?

Amanda: I am not.

Brumby: Well I think you are, and when I find out for sure you'll find out what happens to undercover cops.

Amanda: I am not a cop.

Lisa: Well you're hiding something that's for sure.

Kath: For heaven's sake you lot.

Brumby: Well you said yourself she was hiding something.

Kath: I'm prepared to give her the benefit of the doubt. For now. If she's hiding something it will come out in the end. We'll just wait until it does.

(Helen comes in with the laundry trolley)

Kath: Did you get rid of that booze?

Helen: I couldn't get to it. The place is cordoned off and there are workmen everywhere. Your mate's here.
(nods towards Lisa)

Lisa: Roy??

Helen: Unless you've got any other fella's hidden away.

Kath: Damn it. They're sure to find it now. Well if they do you'll have to own up to it, we're not all taking the blame for your stupidity.

Helen: They won't find it.

Brumby: Wanna bet?

Lisa: Bugger the booze. How am I going to tell Roy I'm pregnant with his baby? It was only a one off.

Brumby: That's your problem.

Lisa: Want me to make it yours?

Cynthia Leach enters the laundry and all goes silent. She doesn't say a word, just smiles, looks at Brumby, and walks out again.

Helen: Who the hell was that?

Brumby: Bloody Cynthia Leach.

Merle: Who?

Brumby: She makes the Freak look like a pushover.

Lisa: That's all we need, another bent screw!

Brumby: You ain't seen nothing yet. With her here we'd be better off at Blackmoor!

Ann has been having regular meetings of all staff, and this time the meeting is attended by Meg, Joyce, Marty, Pat, Rodney, Delia and Cynthia - plus a couple of non-speaking extras. Ann apologises for being late and then gets round to business. She announces that work has commenced on the prison and certain areas will be out of bounds. Some of the prisoners will be moved to Helmslough when the more extensive work begins. Little does she realise that Edwina is listening outside. Edwina does nothing but smile. Cynthia remarks that it would be a good time to get rid of some of the troublemakers, but Ann says it will be her decision who goes. Then she announces that she'll find out soon if she's got the head of department job, but she understands there have been several applicants.

Cynthia: So the position of governor here will be vacant then?

Ann: That is correct. Any senior officer may apply.

(Cynthia just smiles)(Meg looks at her then looks at Ann)

Rodney: I hope it goes to someone worthy.

Ann: Thank you Rodney. That'll be all on that subject for now.

Ann goes on to mention that she's allowing a bit of contact between the workmen and inmates, they will be allowed to eat their meals together.

Cynthia: You've got to be joking. That's ludicrous.

Meg: I think it's a good idea. it will boost morale.

Marty: I agree.

Rodney: Well I agree with Cynthia. You only have to look at Lisa Mullins to know what's likely to happen if you let them mix.

Meg: I don't see how we can avoid it altogether. At least this way we can keep an eye on them.

Delia: Exactly.

Pat: I must admit I've got my reservations though governor. Any contact with male prisoners has always caused trouble here in the past.

Ann: These aren't prisoners though. They'll have the same responsibilities regarding security as the officers do. Anyway my decision's final.

Cynthia: Well it's your neck.

Ann: Quite!!

The women are shocked when they enter the dining room and see the workmen sat eating, they are warned by Cynthia that it's not an excuse to be noisy. Merle spots Wally in the corner and goes and sits by him.

Wally: Hello Merle. How's my star pupil?

Merle: Good thanks Wally. When's the next pottery class? I really enjoy making them pots and things.

Wally: You only had one a couple of days ago. I'm only allowed to do one a week you know. Otherwise I'd never get all the other little jobs done that need doing.

Merle: Oh that's a shame. I really like you Wally.

Wally: I like you too Merle.

(Kath comes over)

Kath: Could I have a word please Wally? Merle could you go and keep Jacko company for a minute.

Merle: Oh I wanna sit by Wally.

Kath: But she's all alone over there. Go on I'll be over there in a minute.

Merle: Oh all right then.
(Merle leaves the table)(Cynthia warns her not to keep moving about)

Cynthia: It's not musical chairs you know.

Kath: I need to speak to you Wally.

Wally: Sure fire away.

Kath: Merle's somehow got it into her head that you and her are going to get married.

Wally: What?? I don't know how she could have got that idea.

Kath: Well you're going to have to put her straight, and please do it gently, she's very fragile, especially after that Tom Lucas business.

Wally: Sure. I don't for the life of me know what I'm going to say to her though.

Lisa is sat with Roy, but she can't tell him she's pregnant. He senses something is up but she says she's just crook. Helen tells a couple of the workmen about the 'grog' and tells them to keep it safe, but they want sexual favours in return. Helen reluctantly agrees and tells them to meet her later.

Edwina enters the dining room, and one of the workmen shouts out:

Workman (Trigger): Bloody hell it's old Steele claws.

Brumby: You know her?

Trigger: Sure as hell I do. This bitch was a screw at the prison where my sister was doing time, about 3 years ago. She supervised a couple of our visits. She was a right hard-faced bitch, according to Sheila.

(There is a gasp across the dining room and they all stare at Edwina.)

Brumby: She's a bloody screw.

Everyone: Screw bitch, screw bitch, screw bitch..................................................

Cynthia
(to Edwina): Aren't you going to get your food? (smirks)

Ann is on the phone in her office discussing Rita:

Ann: I see. When did she die?.... Well at least she's in no pain now..... What about Jenkins?.... She's requested to go to Barnhurst?.... Ok It might be best if she goes there straight away....

(Joyce rushes into Ann's office)

Joyce: It's all kicked off in the dining room. They've found out about Edwina, and they've started throwing things around.

Ann: Have you locked them in?

Joyce: Yes, but they grabbed Edwina. I'm afraid they're going to kill her.

Ann arrives at the dining room gate and tries to talk the women into letting Edwina out. Kath shouts at them all to be quiet. Then she tells Ann that she should have kept her in isolation. Just then, Edwina opens her mouth and tells them everything she overheard during the officers meeting. This causes an uproar and tables start flying across the room. Kath calms them down again and tells Ann that nobody is being transferred. Just then Amanda screams, a workman is lying on the floor with his head cut.

The women are all taken to their cells and locked in. Ann tells them there will be no recreation tonight as punishment. She announces that they're lucky the workman isn't going to die.

Cynthia is on the phone in the staffroom, telling someone they'll have to leave by tonight. Meg walks in and asks who she was talking to. Cynthia remarks that it was a friend who's staying with her, but has outstayed their welcome. Meg goes to Ann and tells her she suspects Joan might be staying at Cynthia's. Ann says it probably was just a friend but perhaps they should call the police anyway. She then informs Meg that Rita has died and they'll need to inform the women in the morning.

Lisa gets into bed and tells Ros it will probably blow over in the morning. Lisa is surprised when she answers back - she then realises that Cindy has swapped places with Ros to get her own back on punching her earlier. Cindy jumps on Lisa and kicks her in the stomach. Lisa falls to the floor in pain. Cindy kicks her again..........
