PREVIOUSLY.....
Ann is in the hospital car park, and as she is getting into her car Roy gets out of his, and Ann sees him going into the hospital. Judging by her facial reaction, she has just clicked that he is the father of Lisa's baby.
Joyce hears Mervin returning home and is quite cool with him. She tells him that a woman phoned but wouldn't leave a name. Mervin pretends he doesn't know who it was but she can sense he's lying.
Joyce: Mervin Pringle. Don't you dare lie to me. Now tell me who she is or I'll leave now and never return.
Mervin: I'm sorry Joycie but I can't.
Joyce: You're having an affair aren't you? Well that's it, you're welcome to each other.
Joyce storms out and slams the door behind her.
Mervin: Joycie, come back.
Rodney goes in the shower block and finds Edwina lying there covered in blood.
A police officer turns up at reception and asks Meg if he can speak to Cynthia Leach.
Cynthia and a non-speaking officer are conducting the cell-searches and the women are waiting noisily outside.
Cynthia: Shut up. This is a prison not a social club.
Kath: Well if you told us what you were looking for....
Cynthia: You know darn well what we're looking for Maxwell so you can drop the act. Right it's your cell next.
They turn over Kath and Merle's cell, and Cynthia finds a bag of drugs in Kath's mattress.
Cynthia: Well well, what have we here? Drugs? Looks like you're going to be out of action for quite some time Maxwell.
Merle: Kath, are they yours?
Kath: Of course they're not Merle. Any fool can see I've been set up.
Cynthia: She's calling you a fool Merle, that's not very nice is it? Right Maxwell, you're off to the pound, and I wouldn't be surprised if they threw away the key. (starts laughing as they drag Kath off).............

Episode 753
Cynthia is in the staffroom bragging to the other officer about getting Kath Maxwell out of the way. As Cynthia turns to face the door, Meg walks in with the police officer.
Cynthia: What's this?
Meg (turns to other officer): Brenda, could you come and help me with something please? Inspector, this is Cynthia Leach.
Meg and the other officer leave the room.
Cynthia (sarcastically): Let me guess, you're here to congratulate me for stopping the drug racket here.
Ann is on the phone in her office when Rodney comes barging in without knocking.
Ann (on phone): OK Janet I've got to go, I'll see you tomorrow then.
Ann: If you ever enter my office again without knocking then I'll make you wish you hadn't.
Rodney (out of breath): Sorry governor there wasn't time. Edwina's been badly bashed. I just found her in the shower block.
Ann: What!? Damn those women. Has an ambulance been called?
Rodney: Yes. I dealt with it myself governor.
Ann: We'll give out the pats on the back later if you don't mind. Right now I want to get to the bottom of this.
Brumby and Helen are in the cell discussing Cynthia.
Helen: That Cynthia really scares me.
Brumby: You stay away from that one, she's a right evil cow.
Helen: It's that big long scar down the side of her face that gives me the creeps. Do you know how she got it?
Brumby: Yeah I know, but my life won't be worth living if I tell anyone about it.
Helen: I won't say nothing. I promise.
Brumby: OK but if you mention it to anyone then we'll both be dead.
Helen: I won't.
Brumby: About 6 years ago there was this prisoner called Marcia Kennedy, she was a bit backward like Merle, and the Leach used to give her a real hard time. Anyway, she got hold of a knife, and one day she just went mad and sliced the Leach's face with it.
Helen: Strewth! What happened to her?
Brumby: She got beaten to death in her cell that night. Everyone knew it was the Leach that did it, but Craven said she'd been with him the whole time, so they set up another girl called Tania Layton to take the rap.
Helen: You're joking? Where is she now?
Brumby: She was transferred straight after her trial. It hasn't been mentioned since, and if she finds out I've told you then I'll end up like Marcia.
Back in the staffroom, Cynthia denies hiding Joan and tells the Inspector that he's welcome to search her house if he likes, but he won't find anything.
Inspector: That won't be necessary at the moment. You will let us know if you hear from her I take it?
Cynthia: Of course, but I don't see why she'd come to me. I hardly know her.
Inspector: Very well. I'll see myself out.
Meg returns and tries to explain to Cynthia why she had to inform the police of her suspicions. Cynthia tells Meg she's going to be very sorry for sticking her nose in, and then storms out of the room.
Ann enters the recroom with Rodney and tells all of the women to be quiet.
Merle: When's Kath coming back? She hasn't done nothing.
Rodney: Shut up Merle, Maxwell won't be coming back for a long time so you'd better get used.....
Ann (interrupts): Thank you Mr. Adams. Kath will have to go before the Visiting Justice Merle. Then it will be me who decides when she comes back. (Looks towards Rodney, who looks sheepish.)
Merle: It's not fair.
Ann: I'm not here to discuss Maxwell. There's been another bashing and quite frankly I'm sick and tired of it.
The women start to talk and they all seem genuinely surprised.
Rodney: Quiet!
Ann: Thank you Mr. Adams.
Helen: Who was bashed Mrs. Reynolds.
Ann: Edwina Steele. It happened in the shower block, so if anybody knows anything I hope they will have the good sense to come forward.
Brumby: What makes you think it was one of us?
Ann: I'm well aware of your feelings towards Steele, and I'm warning you, I won't tolerate any more of this behaviour. There will be an early lock-up tonight as punishment, and all privileges will be cancelled until the culprit owns up.
There are cries of: "That's not fair" as Ann leaves the room. Rodney tells all the women to get to their cells. "That includes you Jones".
Cynthia stops Amanda in the corridor and pulls her to one side.
Cynthia: Well, Maxwell's out the way. I expect you to keep your end of the bargain. Tomorrow you will take over as top dog.
Amanda: I told you, the women won't accept me. Anyway, I don't need the hassle.
Cynthia (grabs her collar): I don't think I heard you correctly Spencer. You'll do it.
Amanda: OK OK but what about my appeal. You said you'd sort it.
Cynthia: Don't worry, your solicitor will be here tomorrow.
Amanda: And how will I get the women to accept me?
Cynthia: Oh you tire me Spencer. Don't worry, I'll make sure they accept you. I can be very persuasive when I want to be, and when the drugs start coming in most of them will follow you anyway.
Amanda: I can't get drugs in here. Forget it.
Cynthia: I didn't hear that Spencer.
Mervin is sat at home, worried sick about Joyce. He phones the mystery woman and tells her she'd better not call him at home again, but he'll meet her somewhere. He hears the door open and hurredly tells the woman he's got to go.
Mervin: Joycie. Where have you been, I've been worried sick?
Joyce: Who was that on the phone? Her I suppose.
Mervin: Oh come on Joyce. Surely you don't think I could be having an affair. Not when I've got someone as beautiful as you.
Joyce: Stop it Mervin. I know you were talking to her, so please don't treat me like a fool.
Mervin: OK I was, but she's......
Joyce: I knew it.
Joyce goes to the bedroom and starts packing. Mervin follows her in.
Mervin: Please Joyce. This is ridiculous.
Joyce: Oh so now I'm ridiculous am I? Well you and your girlfriend are welcome to each other Mervin Pringle. Goodbye.
Joyce grabs her bag and leaves the flat. Mervin tries to stop her.
Mervin: She's not my girlfriend. Please let me explain.
Joyce: Oh get off me Mervin.
Joyce hits Mervin round the head with her bag and walks out.
Meg cooks Marty a meal for his last night at home, and they talk about old times and have a laugh. Then Marty gets serious.
Marty: You will be OK on your own won't you mum? I do worry about you, you know.
Meg: Oh stop it. You're getting me depressed now. I have been on my own before, I'm a big girl now you know.
Marty: I know mum, but I am allowed to worry you know.
Meg: Well you can stop. Now go and pour the drinks before I die of thirst.
Marty gets up to pour the drinks and Meg's face changes to sad. Marty comes back with the drinks.
Meg: Actually I'm quite looking forward to some time on my own. Being able to do what I want without having to consider anyone else.
Marty (laughs): That's lovely. If I'd known that I would have gone sooner.
There is a sudden loud knock on the door. Meg answers it and finds Joyce there in tears.
Joyce: Oh Meg. I've left Mervin. I had nowhere else to go.
Joyce cries into Meg's arms, and Meg looks at Marty.
The next morning, Joyce has made some coffee and tells Meg she's very grateful for letting her stay. Meg tells her she'll be glad of the company as Marty is moving out today. Joyce tells her it will only be for a few days until she finds somewhere else.
Meg: Are you sure Mervin's been cheating on you. It doesn't sound like him. Perhaps it was innocent like he says.
Joyce: No Meg. I gave him every opportunity to explain to me, but he just acted all guilty. No, I never want to see that man again.
Meg: Well you can't avoid him forever. You're bound to see him at work.
Joyce: Yes well it won't be for long. I'm going to see Ann today about getting a transfer to Helmslough.
Meg looks shocked.
Rodney and Lorna Young are doing the breakfast rounds in solitary. They enter Kath's cell.
Kath: When can I see the governor?
Rodney: When she decides she wants to see you Maxwell. You're more stupid than I thought, getting caught with those drugs.
Kath: You call me stupid? That's laughable coming from you Adams. Any fool can see I was set up by Leach.
Rodney: Don't be stupid Maxwell. Cynthia's a professional, she wouldn't waste her time setting you up.
Kath: She's really got you sucked in hasn't she. Not that that would be too difficult. You're pathetic Adams.
Rodney: Enjoy your meal Maxwell. You won't be so cocky after you've seen the VJ.
Rodney shuts the door. Then he goes into Cindy's cell.
Rodney: Here's your meal Simpson. I hope you like prison food because the VJ will be here to see you this morning and I doubt he'll be too lenient.
Cindy: Piss off. She throws her plate of food at Rodney, but he and Lorna get out in time. He opens the hatch.
Rodney: You're going to be in here for ever Simpson, so you'd better get used to your own company. Oh and by the way, your sister's being released today and she didn't even want to say goodbye to you before she went.
Cindy: You bastard. (lunges at the door).
Rodney shuts the hatch and goes off laughing. Cindy wrecks her cell.
Ann tells Meg that the VJ will be here this morning. She has to go out in the afternoon to Rita's funeral but should only be a couple of hours, she says she's not looking forward to seeing Dan again. Meg asks her if Joyce has spoken to her about a transfer to Helmslough, Ann says she has but is delaying putting the application in as she is sure Joyce and Mervin will sort things out. Meg says she hopes she's right. There is a knock at the door and Ann says: "Come in". Rodney enters and tells her that Maxwell is playing up and demanding to see her, also that Simpson threw her meal at him for no reason.
Ann: I suppose you didn't provoke her in any way.
Rodney (gets defensive): Of course not governor. What do you take me for?
Ann: Do you really want me to answer that? Meg tries not to smile.
Rodney: I'm getting pretty tired of this governor. I know you don't like me but you don't have to be rude. I have got feelings you know.
Rodney walks out of the office and slams the door. Ann and Meg look at each other and laugh.
Joyce is sat in the staffroom when Mervin walks in. Joyce gets up to leave but Mervin tries to talk to her. Joyce tells him she never wants to see him again, as Rodney enters the staffroom. Joyce walks out in tears and Rodney smirks and says sarcastically to Mervin: "Lover's tiff?"
Mervin: Oh shut up Rodney.
Mervin walks out and Rodney pulls a face.
Cynthia enters the laundry and tells the women that she has an announcement. Amanda looks uncomfortable.
Cynthia: I'm appointing a new top dog. (Nods towards Amanda)
Brumby: Her?! You must be joking.
Cynthia: I don't joke Tucker. You of all people should know that.
Merle: Kath's top dog.
Cynthia: Not any more. Maxwell was stupid. She didn't go through me. Ok Spencer take over the press.
Merle: I'm doing the press.
Cynthia: You were doing the press Jones. Now you're going to do a pick up. (She pushes the trolley towards Merle)
Merle (takes trolley): It's not fair.
Cynthia: Well Spencer, what are you waiting for? it's all yours.
Amanda reluctantly takes over the press and all the women give her an evil look.
Ann goes to see Kath in solitary and tells her that the VJ will be seeing her soon. Kath tells Ann she was set up but Ann tells her there's no proof, but for what it's worth she does find it hard to believe that she'd be dealing in drugs.
In the laundry the women are none too happy.
Brumby: OK Spencer, what's Leach got on you?
Amanda: I don't know what you mean.
Brumby: Well that bitch doesn't do anything without a reason.
Amanda: Look, I don't like it any more than you do.
Helen: yeah I bet. I didn't see you putting up much of a fight.
Amanda: She threatened to bash me if I didn't. What could I do?
Brumby: Well what do you think we'll do to you.
Roslyn: Oh don't please. No more violence.
Brumby: Get her. No more violence! Where do you think we are Simpson?
Helen: Ros is right. We've already lost all our priviliges.
Brumby: God if Rita was here she wouldn't take none of this crap.
Helen: Well Rita's dead.
Brumby: Yeah and we should show our respect by not letting them push us around. If Vicky was here she'd be in it.
Helen: Well she's not. She's out, and I don't want to spend the rest of my life in here either.
Roslyn: That's right. I'm getting out soon, and I'm never coming back.
Brumby: Not even to visit your sister?
Roslyn: I don't have a sister!
Amanda: Can we get on with some work please.
Brumby: Would you listen to her? Who are you to tell us what to do?
Amanda: I'm top dog, that's who. Unless of course you want me to tell Miss Leach you're causing trouble.
Brumby: You'll get yours Spencer.
Cynthia enters again and asks if everything's OK.
Amanda: Fine thank you Miss Leach.
Brumby shakes her head.
Cynthia: You have a problem Tucker?
Brumby: No miss.
Cynthia: Glad to hear it. We wouldn't want any more accidents would we?
Brumby: No miss.
Cynthia: OK Spencer, your solicitor's here.
On the way to see her solicitor, Cynthia asks Amanda if she's got in touch with any of her drug contacts yet. Amanda tells her to give her a chance but Cynthia tells her not to delay too long if she knows what's good for her, she could easily drop a hint to the others about why she's inside. Amanda tells her she'll ring a friend of hers later that day. Cynthia then announces to her that she wants 75% of the profits.
Amanda: No way. I'm not risking my neck for a measly 25%.
Cynthia shakes her head and then pins Amanda against the wall.
Cynthia: I'm getting pretty tired of you saying no to me Spencer.
Amanda: OK OK. It's a bit steep though. What about 60/40.
Cynthia: It's not up for negotiation Spencer. It's 75/25 and that's final.
They reach the interview room where Amanda's solicitor, Mr. Lang, is waiting. He tells Amanda that she has no chance whatsoever of an appeal as there was no doubt of her guilt. Cynthia terminates the interview and sends Amanda back. Then she moves really close to Mr. Lang and tells him that he's going to tell Amanda that he's working on an appeal but not to do anything about it, as she wants Amanda where she can keep an eye on her. Otherwise his wife will be paid a visit by an ex-prisoner she knows.
Amanda goes back to the laundry and announces to the women that she's getting drugs brought in. Merle tells her that Kath won't like it but Amanda reminds her that Kath isn't there. Brumby says she'll believe it when she sees it but Helen and some of the others seem excited by it.
Ann sees Roy in her office and asks him if he is the father of Lisa's baby. Roy denies it at first, until Ann tells him she saw him at the hospital. Roy admits that he thinks he is and tells her that he intends to marry Lisa when she gets out. Ann says she understands but Lisa will have to be transferred to another prison for the remainder of her sentence.
Cynthia comes into the laundry and whispers to Amanda that her solicitor has been persuaded to arrange her appeal. Then she tells her it's time she made the phone call.
The VJ is tough on Cindy and gives her an extra year. She starts giving him abuse and he sentences her to 2 more days in solitary. Pat Slattery escorts her out, and Cindy is unusually quiet. Kath gets an extra 6 months, even though Ann speaks up for her the VJ is more influenced by Cynthia's testimony. She also has to do another day in solitary.
Marty moves all his stuff into his new flat and he and Stu decide to celebrate with a few cans of beer and a takeaway that evening. Stu asks Marty if he can bring his new girlfriend round as well so he can meet her. Marty says he can't believe he's finally got a girlfriend and was starting to think he could be gay. Stu punches Marty in jest.
At the staff meeting, Ann announces that 6 women from each block are being transferred to Helmslough. Cynthia suggests Kath, but Ann disagrees, then she suggests Merle. Ann disagrees again as she wants to keep Kath and Merle together, which riles Cynthia. Cynthia announces that she saw Merle striking Wally across the head, Wally is at the meeting and has no option but to confirm it. Ann says she will deal with Merle but she is to stay at Wentworth. It is eventually decided that Helen will be one of the ones to go, and Lisa when she gets out of hospital. Ann announces that Lisa is getting better and should be out of hospital soon. Edwina's condition is critical though.
Roy notices that something is wrong with Trigger, and starts pumping him. Trigger finally confesses to Roy that he bashed Edwina, as he found out she once bashed his sister, Sheila, when she was inside. He didn't mean to go that far though. Roy promises not to say anything but he doesn't think it fair the women are being punished for it. Trigger tells him he can't own up as he can't go to jail. "They'll survive."
Joyce brings Merle to see Ann. Ann tells Merle that she can't dismiss the fact that she struck Wally. Merle says she's sorry and starts crying. Ann tells her to apologise to Wally and she'll leave it at that. Joyce takes Merle out and asks Ann if she can have a quick word.
Ann: Yes of course.
Joyce: Have you heard anything about my transfer yet? I'm sorry to push you but I just can't work here seeing Mervin every day. Oh! (Joyce starts weeping and Ann tells her to sit down.)
Ann: If you really are sure you want a transfer then of course I can arrange it, but I don't want you doing anything rash. I mean you and Mervin could sort this thing out.
Joyce: We're not going to sort it out Mrs. Reynolds. It's over.
Merle apologises to Wally at the pottery class. Wally says it's ok. Merle breaks down and tells him that nobody will ever want to marry her. Wally is upset by this and goes and tells Ann he's going to fight for Merle's release. Ann tells him he'll have a big fight on his hands but she'll back him.
Helen tells the 2 workmen that she's being transferred so she won't be able to do them any more favours. Helen goes off and they decide to hand the grog over to the screws, but pick Cynthia, who tells them it will just be their secret for now. A smile appears on Cynthia's face.
Ann returns from Rita's funeral and tells Meg that it was awful. Alice was a wreck, and Ida and Dan were there, both crying. Nancy also turned up along with Julie and Steve Ryan. Lexie couldn't make it as she's heavily pregnant. Then Ann tells Meg that Pippa turned up and tried to talk to her. Meg says to Ann that perhaps if she talked to her, but Ann interrupts and tells Meg to stay out of it, and she's got nothing to say to Pippa. They are talking in reception when Cynthia enters carrying the latest edition of 'The Stir' and asks Ann if she's read this. Ann looks at it and sees the main headline is: "Ex-screw gets bashed in shower block and prisoners are wrongly blamed". Ann gets angry and tells her to have Tucker brought to her office. Just then Janet Walsh enters the prison and tells Ann she wants to do an inspection of the prison. She notices Cynthia and they recognise each other from years ago. Ann and Meg look at each other in horror when they realise that they are old friends.
Roslyn and Helen say goodbye to the women in the laundry, as Roslyn is about to be released and Helen transferred. Roslyn announces she's never coming back. Helen tells Brumby that she's glad she's getting away from Cynthia. When they are gone Brumby asks Amanda when the drugs are coming in, and Amanda announces it should be any time now.
Roy visits Lisa and asks her if he is the father of her baby, she says he definitely is. Then he tells her she's being transferred. Lisa is upset until he asks her to marry him. She says yes, and they share a hug. He tells Lisa she'll be transferred tomorrow but she only has a couple of weeks left to serve so to stay out of trouble. Lisa says she's not doing anything to muck things up this time.
Ann, Meg and Cynthia are in Ann's office with Janet. Cynthia asks Janet if she have a word in private, and Ann is irritated when Janet sends her and Meg out of the office. Cynthia then tells Janet that she's heard rumours of Meg doing deals with the prisoners, and she saw one of them giving her cash. Janet tells her she needs more than rumours, so Cynthia suggests she does a locker search. Meg and Ann are called back in and Janet announces that she wants to conduct a locker search of all staff. Ann tells her that isn't necessary but Janet tells Ann she has to learn to follow orders.
Edwina is in her hospital bed asleep, when a mystery hand picks up a pillow and puts it over her face.
Marty returns to the flat with some cans of beer and a takeaway. Stu is sat on the sofa and tells Marty that his girlfriend is in the kitchen and can't wait to meet him.
Stu (shouts): Mags, could you come here a minute please.
Stu's girlfriend enters the room as he introduces them: "Mags this is Marty." Marty's eyes meet with hers and they both look shocked... it is Spike Marsh!
Janet opens Meg's locker while Meg, Ann and Cynthia are stood there. Cynthia is looking smug. Janet produces a wad of money and a bottle, which Janet opens and smells.
Janet: Alcohol. Can you explain this please Mrs. Morris.
Meg: No. I've never seen it before in my life.
Janet: OK there will have to be an investigation. In the meantime you are suspended from duty Mrs. Morris. Cynthia, you can take over as deputy governor.
Ann and Meg look at each other in despair..........
