PREVIOUSLY.....
Ann has called Cynthia to her office.
Ann: I've just had a very interesting chat with the governor of Helmslough.
Cynthia: I take it there's some relevance to this, governor.
Ann: Does the name Marcia Kennedy mean anything to you?
Cynthia: Rings a bell, but I meet lots of people in this job. I can't remember everybody.
Ann: Oh I think you'd remember this one, she was murdered at Blackmoor 6 years ago.
Cynthia: Oh yes. I remember now. Very sad. At least they caught the person responsible.
Ann: Did they? I wonder.
Cynthia: What exactly are you getting at governor?
Ann: An ex-prisoner from here has been spreading rumours around Helmslough that you murdered her, and Craven helped you set the other girl up.
Cynthia (gets angry): Who was it? I'll sue her for slander.
Ann: That won't be necessary. I'm inclined to believe the story.
Cynthia: That is a very serious accusation governor. I hope for your sake you've got some evidence to back it up or I'll take you to the cleaners.
Ann: Not yet, but I intend to find the evidence, and believe me when I put my mind to something then I get it done.
Cynthia picks up the phone in the staffroom and dials it.
Cynthia: Sid? It's Cynthia. I need you to return that favour I did for you.
Wendy is in reception with Pat, when Ann comes through.
Ann: Pat, Edwina Steele is being brought back here. She could be here any time now, we're also expecting an old friend from Barnhurst. Can you process them please, I've got to go out for a bit.
Pat: Yes governor, but surely you're not putting Steele back with the others are you?
Ann: I've got no choice I'm afraid. Janet Walsh has insisted that we should be able to cope now that the new security measures are in place, but we'll have to keep a very close eye on that one.
Ann signs out and leaves.
Pat: I get the feeling Ann's not in favour with the department at the moment.
Wendy: I know. That Janet Walsh seems like a right ogre.
Just then Edwina is brought in by a police escort. Behind her is Chrissie Latham.
Cynthia finds Brumby in her cell and asks her if she's been spreading rumours about her.
Brumby: No, of course not. I know what would happen to me if I did.
Cynthia: You'd better believe it Tucker. I know it was you, I've found out that it was Helen Stevens who talked, and you shared a cell with her.
Brumby: Please Miss Leach, I'll do anything you like. Don't hurt me please.
Cynthia: I'm not going to hurt you Tucker.....Yet! But it is coming, and when it does you know that it won't be pleasant don't you Tucker?!
Ann is driving home when she realises she is being followed by a large white van. It starts tooting and flashing so she tries to pull over to let it pass. It ends up forcing her off the road and she loses control and drives off the road. Her car rolls over several times and is badly smashed up. The white van stops for a minute and then drives off..........

Episode 755
Edwina is taken to Brumby's cell and told by Pat to make her bed. Cynthia arrives on the scene and tells Pat to sort Latham out while she takes care of Steele. Pat takes Chrissie off.
Edwina: What do you want?
Cynthia: That's no way to speak to the deputy governor.
Edwina (sarcastically): Congratulations. Who did you walk over to get that job?
Cynthia: That's not very nice Steele, you really ought to watch that tongue of yours or I might just cut it out.
Edwina: Yeah ok. But I know exactly how your mind works, I've been there remember.
Cynthia: Don't compare yourself with me Steele. You were stupid enough not to cover your tracks. I always cover mine.
Edwina: I was unlucky. I didn't realise I was being watched by the governor.
Cynthia: See now that's a mistake I'd never make Steele. In fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised if there was a new governor here very soon.
Edwina: Who?
Cynthia: Yours truly.
Edwina: You?!
Cynthia: Don't look so surprised Steele, that's where I differ from amateurs like you and Ferguson. I always come out on top!
Edwina: Well you'll be able to arrange a transfer for me then.
Cynthia: That might be arranged. I don't do anything for nothing though. Obviously I'll need you to do something for me before I can even consider it.
Edwina: Like what?
Cynthia: You're sharing with Tucker, and she made a big mistake in crossing me. I want her taught her a valuable lesson.
Edwina: You want me to bash her?
Cynthia: No. That pleasure will be all mine. You're just going to take the blame for it.
Edwina: No way!
Cynthia: Fair enough (starts to walk out of the cell), but think about it, if you do this for me I can see to it that you're put somewhere safe. If not, then there's no telling what the other women will do to you, especially if I have a word with some of them.
Edwina: OK OK I haven't got much choice then, when will you do it?
Cynthia: After lock-up tonight.
Cynthia leaves and Edwina starts making her bed. Brumby enters the cell.
Brumby: No way! I'm not sharing with you, you bitch.
Edwina: Well I don't particularly like it either, but we've got no choice.
Brumby: Just wait till the others find out you're back. (leaves cell)
Pat takes Chrissie to her cell.
Chrissie: A single cell? Can't I share with someone, I get bored on my own?
Pat: Sorry, we haven't got the room. We've had to transfer women here from D-Block while the workmen are here.
Chrissie: What, you mean there's men here at Wentworth?
Pat: Yes but you can't see them, the security gates are locked at all times now.
Chrissie: Oh that's a shame. Oh well, I suppose there's always the male officers.
Pat: Just make your bed Latham.
Chrissie: Ere, I hear old Fergo's on the run. Have they caught her yet?
Pat: No. Not that it's any of your business.
Chrissie: Well I hope when they do they throw away the key. That bitch gave me a really good bashing once you know.
Pat: I'm sure she'll be caught. Hurry up and get that bed made.
Pat goes out. Chrissie sits on the bed and says "This place isn't what it was."
Joyce is talking to Marty in the staffroom and tells him that she's sure Meg will be alright once she's had a few days to think things over. Marty admits he is worried about her as he hasn't heard from her since she went away. He asks Joyce if she's made up with Mervin, but she replies that she's getting a divorce. Cynthia enters at this point and goes to the coffee urn.
Cynthia: Divorced? I thought you and Mervin were made for each other.
Joyce: I'd rather not discuss it thank you.
Cynthia: Touchy aren't you?
Joyce (changes subject): I hear we've got 2 new arrivals.
Cynthia: Not so new I'm afraid. They sent Steele back.
Marty: You're joking?! Are they mad or what?
Joyce: I bet Mrs. Reynolds wasn't too happy about that.
Cynthia: No, but then she's too weak to do anything about it.
Marty: What is she supposed to do? She has to follow the rules the same as we do.
Cynthia: Of course.
Joyce: Who was the other one?
Cynthia: Oh some tart from Barnhurst called Chrissie Latham.
Joyce: Latham?!
Cynthia: You know her?
Joyce: I'll say. She was the one who killed Meg's..... (realises Marty is sat there and shuts up).
Marty: It's ok you can say it. She killed my father. I'll never forget that name. Mum seems to have forgiven her now though.
Cynthia: Your mother is far too forgiving for her own good. I hope you won't be so soft towards her.
Marty: I haven't got a clue how I'm going to deal with her yet. I've never even met her. It's not something I'm looking forward to.
Cynthia: Well if she'd killed a member of my family I'm not sure I could restrain myself from her.
Pat suddenly rushes in looking upset.
Joyce: Pat. Whatever's happened?
Pat: It's terrible news. The governor's been in a car crash. She's....she's.....
Cynthia: My God, she's not dead is she?
Pat: No, but she's in an awful way. She's in a coma. The hospital just rang, they wanted to know how to get in touch with her kids.
Joyce: Oh how dreadful. Oh it's just one thing after another. (Joyce starts to weep).
Marty: Come on Joyce, I'm sure she'll pull through, Mrs. Reynolds is a fighter. Oh no, how are we going to get in touch with mum? We don't even know where she's gone.
Rodney enters.
Rodney (joking): Christ, what's up with you lot? You look like someone's died or something?
Marty: Oh for once in your life Rodney give that mouth of yours a rest.
Rodney: Sorry. What's up then?
Cynthia (snaps): The governor's been in a serious car accident. Not that I'd expect you to have any compassion.
Rodney: Hell! What do you think I am? I do have feelings you know.
Cynthia: I'm sure you do. Somewhere!
Rodney: I suppose you'll be acting governor now then.
Cynthia: I suppose I will. I hadn't really thought about that.
Brumby is in the dining room telling the others that Edwina is back.
Sheila: You're kidding me? So they let the bitch back here then.
Lisa: Don't do anything stupid Sheila. You'll end up spending years in here if you kill her.
Sheila: Not if I can help it I won't. I don't intend to get caught.
Kath: Oh great, so someone else gets the blame. How very considerate of you.
Sheila: They can't blame anyone without proof.
Lisa: Since when have the cops needed proof.
Brumby: Well I've got to share with the bitch, I don't care what you do to her.
Kath: For heaven's sake Brumby, when are you going to wake up? You're going to end up spending the rest of your life in here if you're not careful.
Merle: You'd better listen to Kath, Brumby. She's really clever you know.
Brumby: Yeah really clever. She's in for killing her kid.
Kath (gets angry): You're out of line Tucker.
Lisa: Yeah why don't you go and sit with your mate Spencer.
Brumby: Ok then I will.
Brumby gets up and moves to a table occupied by Amanda and Cindy.
Amanda: What's up?
Brumby: I didn't like the company over there.
Cindy: Lucky us!
Brumby: Shut up Simpson. Anyway I need to talk to you Mandy.
Amanda: The name's Amanda, and what do you want?
Brumby: It's sort of private.
Amanda: OK Cindy, get lost.
Cindy gets up.
Cindy: Bloody hell. Nobody tells you nothing in this place.
Amanda: OK Brumby, spit it out.
Brumby: I need your help.
Amanda: That's a new one.
Brumby: The Leach is out to get me, and she really means business.
Amanda: What did you do to rile her?
Brumby: That doesn't matter. I just need your help keeping her off my back.
Amanda: There's nothing I can do about that one. The less I have to do with her the better.
Brumby sticks her fork in Amanda's hand.
Brumby: You'd better think of something, because if she gets me then I'll see to it that she gets you too.
Amanda: Ow. OK OK, but I don't really see what I can do.
Brumby: There's only one thing for it. We've got to finish her once and for all.
Wally turns up at the hospital with Joyce and Marty. Marty tells Joyce he's meant to be going on a date that evening but he's sort of glad to be getting out of it. They see Pippa and Paul walking around in the waiting area.
Wally: How is she?
Paul: Hi Wally. It's not looking good I'm afraid. The doctors have only given her a 50/50 chance.
Wally: My God.
Joyce (starts weeping): Oh poor Ann. Can we see her?
Paul: I'm afraid not. Not yet anyway.
Wally: How are you Pippa?
Pippa (fighting back the tears): If she dies without us making up then I'll never be able to live with myself.
Marty: We've got to think positive. Ann's a fighter. She'll pull through.
Paul: Thanks mate. I hope you're right.
Cynthia is on the phone in the staffroom.
Cynthia: She's still alive. What went wrong?.........I see, well it should give me time to get to Tania Layton anyway, and if she does pull through she'll have nothing on me whatsoever. She won't have a job either if I've got anything to do with it.
Kath and Merle are talking in their cell.
Merle: I wish you were still top dog Kath. I don't like that Amanda, she keeps trying to give me pills.
Kath: Does she now?! Well you make sure you tell her no, won't you Merle? That stuff is bad.
Merle: Yeah I know.... Kath?
Kath: Yes Merle?
Merle: If I do get out of here, can I still come and visit you?
Kath: Of course you can Merle. Have you changed your mind about wanting to get out then?
Merle: Well it might not be so bad. At least I wouldn't have Miss Leach telling me what to do, and I don't like these new rules.
Kath: That's great Merle. We'll talk to Wally tomorrow and see if he's done anything about it yet.
Meanwhile, we hear footsteps coming down the corridor, and then we see Brumby and Edwina in their cell. The door unlocks and opens. Cynthia walks in.
Cynthia: Tucker. I've decided to pay you a little visit, see how you're getting on.
Brumby: Please don't touch me. I'll do anything you want.
Cynthia: You will anyway. Steele is going to take the blame for this beating, and you'd better not say any different Tucker.
Cynthia locks the door and starts laying into Brumby.
Next morning, the officers have all been gathered in the staffroom by Cynthia. They are talking amongst themselves as Cynthia is yet to arrive.
Joyce: The poor girl was quite badly beaten. She's still in the prison hospital.
Marty: And you think it was Edwina?
Rodney: Well who else could it have been? Unless you're suggesting it was an officer.
Marty: Well it wouldn't be the first time an officer's beaten up a prisoner in the middle of the night.
Rodney: How's Latham settling in anyway?
Marty: Nice try Adams. I'm not going to treat her any different from the other women.
Rodney: We'll see. You haven't met her yet have you?
Joyce: I'm sure Marty is quite capable of dealing things his own way thank you Rodney.
Rodney: I was only saying..... Oh just forget it, everything I say is wrong anyway.
Cynthia enters, dressed in a suit.
Cynthia: Right. I've called you all here as you are no doubt aware that Mrs. Reynolds was involved in a car accident yesterday.
Pat: Is there any more news on her?
Cynthia: I've just called the hospital and there's no change I'm afraid, so we've just got to wait and hope. Right, as you probably have guessed, I'm acting governor until we know whether Mrs. Reynolds is returning or not. After that, well we'll just have to wait and see.
Joyce: Could you tell me if there's any news on my transfer to Helmslough?
Cynthia: I'm sorry, it's out of the question at the moment I'm afraid. We're too short staffed now what with this, and Mrs. Morris walking out.
Marty (mutters): More like she was pushed out.
Cynthia: Speak up Mr. Jackson. If you've got something to say then it's worth us all hearing.
Marty: It was nothing.
Cynthia: Well kindly be quiet then if you've got nothing to say. Now, about the attack on Tucker....
Rodney: It's obvious who did that if you ask me.
Cynthia: Well nobody did thank you Mr. Adams. There will have to be an enquiry.
Pat: Is Steele to stay in solitary then?
Cynthia: For now yes. I'll question them both this morning.
Edwina is in solitary pacing up and down. Cynthia opens the hatch.
Edwina: Is this your idea of getting me transferred?
Cynthia: Quit your moaning Steele. You're away from the other women aren't you?
Edwina: For now, but I can't stay in here for ever. Anyway, we had a deal.
Cynthia: I don't do deals with scum like you Steele. I've decided you'll be more use to me where you are.
Edwina: You rotten bitch. I'll tell the world it was you who bashed her.
Cynthia: Then you'll just have to be stopped won't you. Permanently.
Cynthia shuts the hatch and walks off, leaving Edwina shouting "You bitch!"
The women are working in the laundry when Cynthia enters and announces she is the new governor so they'd all better toe the line or suffer the consequences. There is a deadly silence then Kath asks how Brumby is.
Cynthia: She'll be alright. Your friend Steele made a right mess of her though.
Sheila: She's no friend of anyone's. Where is she now?
Cynthia: In the pound. Where you'll be if you don't get on with your work. I want no slacking from any of you. Security is going to be tightened here. You've had it too easy for too long.
Lisa: Bloody hell, security's already tightened.
Cynthia: OK you're on a charge for insorbordanation. So don't expect to get out for an extra couple of weeks Mullins.
Lisa: But I.....
Kath: Lisa, don't.
Cynthia: That's good advice Maxwell. Anyone else looking for a charge? Right, well back to work then. Spencer, I want a word with you outside.
They go out in the corridor.
Amanda: What's up?
Cynthia: I need another favour. Steele's got a big mouth which needs shutting.
Amanda: Why what's she saying? Wait a minute, it was you who bashed Brumby wasn't it? She said you were after her.
Cynthia: Shut up, if it gets around then you'll get the same.
Amanda: OK I won't say anything I promise.
Cynthia: So long as you don't. Anyway I want you to get hold of some of those 'special' drugs that you were dealing on the outside.
Amanda: You mean....
Cynthia: Yes, that's exactly what I mean, and you're going to give them to Steele.
Amanda: But she won't take drugs. Anyway she's in solitary.
Cynthia: Only for a couple of days. It should give you enough time to get the stuff in, and if she won't take them then just put them in her food.
Amanda: I don't know. They could kill her.
Cynthia: Well it didn't worry you on the outside, and you're not going to give her enough to kill her, just to make her very sick. You don't want the others finding out why you're in here do you?
Amanda: OK but that's the last favour.
Cynthia (grabs Amanda by the throat): I decide how many favours there are left Spencer.
Chrissie is on cleaning duty in the shower-block. Marty comes in.
Chrissie: Oh hello. The male officers have certainly improved since I was last here.
Marty: It's Latham isn't it?
Chrissie: Yeah. You can call me Chrissie though. (gets close to Marty)
Marty: Well my name is Mr. Jackson.
(Chrissie backs off)
Chrissie: Oh I heard you worked here now. You're Mrs. Morris's son aren't you? Hey does she still work here, she can help me get my parole. She's always been good to me.
Marty: No, she doesn't work here any more. I just wanted to see what you looked like.
Chrissie: Look it was a long time ago. I was a right bitch back then, I'm a totally different person now, ask anyone.
Marty: I'm sorry, I can't deal with this. (Marty walks out - Chrissie shrugs her shoulders and starts cleaning again).
The women are now at tea in the dining room. Lisa, Kath and Merle are sat together.
Lisa: I've had a gutful of that bloody Leach. She'll probably see to it that I never get out of here.
Kath: We're certainly in for a hard time while she's here. I wonder what happened to Mrs. Reynolds.
Merle: Yeah she was really nice.
Lisa: Well at least she was fair I suppose. Dammit. I can't even get to see Roy with the gates locked all the time.
Kath: It's not worth the risk anyway. You're better off keeping your nose clean until you get out.
Lisa: If I get out. One's things for sure though, I'm not having my baby being born in this bloody place.
Chrissie comes to sit at their table at this point.
Chrissie: Are you having a baby? I had my baby in here, until the bloody bastards took her off me. She's called Elizabeth, she's nearly 7 now.
Merle: Where is she now?
Chrissie: My brother and his wife are looking after her until I get out. I would have been out 2 years ago if it hadn't been for that bitch Bennett.
Kath: Are you from Barnhurst? I've heard about Miss. Bennett.
Chrissie: Yeah, but I was in here before that. Then I got transferred, and Bloody Bennett has buggered up my parole 3 times now.
Lisa: Well it's no better here now that Cynthia bloody Leach is governor.
Chrissie: yeah I've heard about her. She makes the Freak look like a puppy dog. I'm Chrissie by the way.
Kath: I'm Kath, that's Lisa and that's Merle. Oh and stay away from that bitch sitting over there.
Chrissie (looks over): Who is she?
Lisa: Amanda Spencer. She reckons she's top dog, but she's nothing but a pusher.
Chrissie: Drugs? I used to be into all that but I don't touch the stuff now. Cor, if Bea was here she'd soon put her down.
Kath: She used to be top dog didn't she? Tina and Jacko are always talking about her.
Chrissie: Yeah, queen Bea we used to call her, and she was. Nobody messed with her and got away with it. Barnhurst was never the same after she died.
(Chrissie goes quiet)
Sheila is talking to Tina, who is serving the food. She is telling her to get a message to Edwina saying that she's dead when she gets out. Tina nods and Sheila goes and sits down.
Marty arrives home and flops on the sofa.
Stu: Come on, there's no time for that. You've got to get ready.
Marty: I'm not going out tonight, I've had one hell of a day.
Stu: All the more reason to cheer yourself up. Come on, we're meeting the girls in an hour.
Marty: But I thought we agreed to cancel.
Stu: That was last night. It's all arranged for tonight, we're meeting them for a meal.
Marty: I'm sorry Stu, but I really should go and see Mrs. Reynolds.
Stu: You can ring the hospital and see how she is. Now come on, I won't tell you again.
Kath and Merle are in their cell again.
Merle: I hope Wally's in tomorrow. I want to ask him when I'm getting out of here.
Kath: Don't get your hopes up too high Merle, he may not be able to get you out.
Merle: He will. Wally's really nice.
Kath: Merle, you have got over this crush you had on him haven't you?
Merle: Yeah, but it might be different when I'm not in prison.
Kath: Oh Merle!
Marty and Stu walk into the restaurant.
Stu: There they are, over there.
Marty: I don't know how I let you talk me into this.
Stu: Well you're not backing out now. They've seen us.
They go over to the table. Marty and his date are introduced. She is called Sally, and is early 30's with glasses and dark brown hair. She is very quiet. Marty glances over to Spike as she kisses Stu, their eyes meet and she looks away.
Wally is at the hospital again with Paul and Pippa. The doctor comes out and asks to speak to Paul and Pippa. All Wally can see is the look of despair on Pippa's face, and he fears the worst.
The meal is a bit strained. Marty and Spike spend most of the evening looking at each other. Stu tries talking to Sally but it proves to be very hard work. In the end they all agree to pay the bill and leave. Stu invites Spike back for the night but she says she's going to take Sally home. They go off, and Stu asks Marty what he thought of Sally. Marty tells him she wasn't really his type and he'd rather find his own girlfriends from now on. Stu tells him there's no helping some people.
Wally asks Paul what the doctor said. He explains that Ann is still in a coma and the chances of her pulling through are quite slim. Pippa bursts into tears and Paul puts his arm around her. The situation gets uneasier when Cynthia arrives carrying a large bunch of flowers!
Sheila and Lisa are locked in their cell. Sheila gets a small package which has been taped under the sink and opens it up to reveal a pill. Lisa lectures Sheila for taking drugs in their cell. Sheila tells her to rack off, before swallowing the pill, then she suddenly goes funny and yells out in pain before collapsing on the floor. Lisa screams.
Wally tells Cynthia that nobody is allowed to see Ann, so Cynthia tells him to give Ann her best if she wakes up, leaves the flowers and goes. Wally stares after her not knowing what to make of her sudden visit.
Rodney is walking down the corridor checking the cells when he hears some banging and shouting coming from Lisa's cell. He runs to the cell and goes in to find Sheila lying on the floor.
Rodney: What happened Mullins?
Lisa (crying): I don't know, she just collapsed. Can't you do something?
Rodney: Wait here I'll get an ambulance.
Rodney runs into reception and tells Joyce to call an ambulance as Sheila Blake is unconscious in her cell. Joyce quickly phones for the ambulance and then asks Rodney what happened. He answers: "If you ask me it's drugs."
Next morning Cynthia arrives at reception and is told by Rodney that Sheila is in hospital, and they've found out she has taken drugs which were laced with animal medicines. Cynthia demands that they carry out an immediate cell search.
While Rodney and Pat are conducting the cell serches, the women are noisy and demanding to know how Sheila is. Lisa gets Amanda to one side and tells her that it's her drugs that made Sheila collapse and if she dies then she'll pay. Cynthia arrives on the scene and tells the women to shut up.
Cynthia: I won't tolerate this sort of behaviour.
Amanda: How's Sheila?
Cynthia: I didn't realise the two of you were so close Spencer.
Amanda: I care about all my girls.
Lisa: Yeah sure.
Cynthia: Shut up the lot of you.
Rodney comes out of Amanda's cell with a bag of pills.
Cynthia: Are these yours Spencer?
Amanda: Never seen them before.
Cynthia: Of course you haven't. OK Mr. Adams take her to solitary. You can explain to the VJ, Spencer.
Cynthia pays Amanda a visit in solitary later, and tells her she was stupid and she can't afford to have stupid people on her team.
Amanda: But I didn't know that stuff was laced.
Cynthia: It doesn't matter now, you were only top dog temporarily anyway. You've been demoted Spencer. I've arranged for Roo Morgan to be transferred here tomorrow, and she'll soon sort you all out.
Amanda: But what about my appeal?
Cynthia: Appeal? What appeal? You don't think you're ever getting out of here do you Spencer? You're going to stay locked up where you belong.
Amanda: You rotten bitch. You used me.
Cynthia: You catch on quick don't you Spencer.
Cynthia shuts the hatch and Amanda starts banging on the door. Cynthia walks off laughing.
Joyce arrives at the hospital to see Ann, and sees Trigger in reception. She is about to ask him if he's seeing Ann when she hears him ask the receptionist if he can see Sheila Blake.
Cynthia is at home when someone knocks at the door loudly. It knocks again, and Cynthia shouts "All right, all right, don't knock the bloody door down". She opens the door and Joan Ferguson is stood there.........
