PREVIOUSLY.....

Janet Walsh enters reception to find Sue Bailey there.

Janet: Right, what's been going on then?

Sue: Well I've only just got in myself. Officer Long didn't know who else to phone. Mr. Adams went off with the ambulance.

Janet: This is what happens when I leave Mrs. Reynolds to run things her way. Well there are going to be a few changes here I can promise you that.

Sue: I hardly think you can blame Mrs. Reynolds. Is there any news by the way?

Janet: Not yet, but I'm expecting it to be over very soon.

Sue: Oh?

Janet: Yes. I've agreed to reinstate Cynthia Leach as governor.

Grace is in the car with the policeman.

Grace: Have you managed to find Leach yet?

Policeman: No. She wasn't where we found Bradshaw, and she's not at her home.

Grace: Dammit, we have to find her. Bradshaw won't leave the house until he hears it from her.

Policeman: Have there been any more shootings?

Grace: No, he's agreed to hold off for a couple of hours while we find Leach.

Policeman: That's something I suppose.

Grace: It's not much comfort for them in there though, and then knowing they've got to go back and work under that sadistic bitch.

Inside Meg is comforting Joyce, who is still in a state of shock.

Meg: Can't you let her go, you've got enough hostages haven't you?

Sid: Shut up. I say if I've got enough hostages or not.

Ann: But you were going to let her go earlier.

Sid: She had her chance. Now just shut up the lot of you.

Joyce: I hope they throw the book at you, you bastard.
Lunges at Sid. Sid hits her round the face and she falls.

Greg: You miserable coward. That's all you're good for isn't it, hitting women.

Sid: I'll show you what I'm good for.
Opens window and starts shouting.

Sid: Okay there's too many hostages and they're doing my head in.

Meg
(whispers to Joyce): He's going to let you go.

Joyce: I don't care.

Sid
(to Greg): Over here!

Sid
(out of window): Okay, the next hostage will die in ten seconds if I haven't got what I want.

He points the gun at Greg's head. Karen screams.

Grace is about to get back on his megaphone when another shot is heard............................

EPISODE 763

Grace frantically tells Sid to cease gunfire as he's tried to contact Cynthia but she must have gone into hiding. He sees Sid come to the window.

Inside, Karen is frozen at the side of Greg's body, then all of a sudden she jumps up, grabs a chair and smashes it over Sid's head. He drops the gun and she grabs it. Everybody else moves in around Karen, apart from Joyce who is still leaning over Mervin's dead body and crying.

Sid: You wouldn't use that, you wouldn't know how. Now be a good girl and hand me the gun before anybody else gets hurt.

Karen: You bastard.

Then she shoots Sid and hits his arm as he runs outside.

Grace sees Sid is armless and tells the policeman not to shoot. Then he sees Karen following with a gun pointing at Sid. Grace calls out and Sid drops to the floor as Karen fires. The bullet goes straight into the chest of a policeman. He drops dead. Karen drops the gun as the other hostages come running out. Meg runs over to Karen and comforts her as Sid is carted off into a police car. Grace comes over and takes Karen gently by the arm.

Meg: Do you have to?

Grace: I'm afraid so.

Karen goes with him without saying a word.
Tristian comes over and Meg falls into his arms, crying. Ann goes back into the house and gently moves Joyce away from Mervin's body. Pat, Wendy and Marty are just outside looking dazed.

Sue Bailey has taken Chrissie's meal to her in solitary and is getting a hard time, as Chrissie is demanding to see the governor.

Sue: I'm sorry, but the governor isn't in at the moment.

Chrissie: Well the deputy governor then. It is my right you know.

Sue: Don't tell me what your rights are Latham. There's only Miss Walsh in at the moment, I can ask her if you like.

Chrissie: That bitch! I'll wait til Reyno gets back.

Sue: Fine, now we've got that sorted please eat your meal before I return.

She goes out and locks the door. Chrissie pulls a face and pushes her meal onto the floor.

Janet is in the governor's office when Sue enters and reports about Latham demanding to see somebody and being difficult.

Janet: That'll have to wait for now. I've just had word that the hostage situation is over.

Sue: Oh thank God. Does that mean Mrs. Reynolds will be returning as governor?

Janet: Not necessarily.

Sue: But you can't let that Leach woman back now after this surely?

Janet: Miss. Leach won't be returning. The police have arrested her in connection with the kidnapping. It would seem that Bradshaw wasn't so loyal after all.

Sue: So why won't Mrs. Reynolds be returning then if Miss. Leach isn't coming back?

Janet: Apparantly there have been 3 deaths....

Sue: No! Not Mrs. Reynolds? What about Meg, and Joyce?

Janet: If you'd let me finish. I haven't been given any names as yet, that is all I know.

Meg and Marty are both at home, changed into their uniforms ready for work. Meg takes a quick mouthful of coffee, then Marty apologises for the way he behaved towards her earlier. Meg says that's ok, she's just glad that they're both safe. Marty tells her everything about what happened with Spike, and she promises not to mention it to anybody.

Joyce is sat at home, staring into space. Ann brings her a cup of tea and asks her if she'll be ok on her own as she has to go into Wentworth. Joyce nods and says she'll have to get used to being on her own now.

Rodney signs into Wentworth with a bandage on his head.

Sue: Should you be back so soon?

Rodney: It's only a bump, but I'm going to make all of those bitches pay for this.

Janet walks into reception and sees Rodney.

Janet: Mr. Adams, thank you for coming back so soon. Mrs. Reynolds will be returning soon, and I expect she'll want to speak with you when she does.

Sue: You mean she's alright? That's wonderful. What about the others though?

Janet: None of the officers were hurt, but Mr. Pringle was killed I'm afraid.

Rodney: I suppose that means Joyce won't be back for a while. As if we weren't short staffed enough.

Sue: You're all heart Rodney. Mervin's dead for God sake.

Janet: That will do, I won't have my officers fighting amongst themselves, and Mr. Adams as we're short staffed I suggest you get on with some work.
With that she marches out of reception.

Rodney: What's eating her? I only said...

Sue: Oh shut up Rodney I'm busy.
She turns her back to him and starts typing.

Rodney: What's the matter with everybody? It's not much of a loss to Wentworth is it?
He doesn't see Ann walk in behind him.

Ann: Mr. Adams! I will not have that sort of talk in my prison.

Rodney: Sorry Mrs. Reynolds. I was just letting off steam, I suppose you heard what that Latham bitch did to me.

Ann: Yes, and I'll see her when I've got myself organised. In the meantime I'd like you to get the women back to work, they've been locked up too long.

Rodney
(shortly): Yes Mrs. Reynolds.

Ann goes to her office and finds Janet in there, who is less than compassionate: asking when the rest of the staff will be back on duty. Ann gives her an earful and Janet leaves with her tail between her legs.

In the laundry, Roo is throwing her weight around and trying to get protection money out of Kath. Sheila is now back with them and she also refuses. Roo tells her she's got a short memory. Kath tells them to be quiet as they hear a broadcast on the radio and they learn all about the hostage situation and Mervin dying. Su is brought back in at this point and she freezes when she hears that Cynthia has been let out on bail.

Rodney catches Grandma wandering around the corridor.

Rodney: What are you doing here Chubb?

Grandma: Minding me own business. You should try it sometime.

Rodney: Right, you're on an insubordination charge.

Grandma: Piss off!

Rodney
(grabs her arm): Right you're coming to the governor with me.

Grandma: I ain't going anywhere with you, and get your bloody hands off me.

Grandma walks off, puffing on a fag.

Rodney (shouts): You'll get yours you stupid old bag!

Grandma sticks 2 fingers up to him.

In the laundry, Su tells Roo to get off the press. Roo can see she's in no mood for arguments so she lets her have it.

Roo: Who needs the press to be top dog anyway?

Su: You'd better make the most of it Morgan, 'cause when I've finished with Cynthia I'm going to get you.

Roo: Shocking what happened to your daughter isn't it?

Su flies at Roo and they start to fight.

Just then Rodney walks in and carts them both off to the governor. Kath goes to the press.

Kath: I'll keep this warm for when Su gets back.

Amanda: When Roo gets back you mean!

Sheila: Oh shut up Spencer, don't forget we still owe you one.

Kath: Alright, grab her.

Sheila and Jacko grab Amanda and take her to Kath.

Sheila: Let's see how she likes having her hand burnt in the press.

Kath: OK put her hand there.

Amanda: No!!

Amanda's hand is put under the press and Kath brings it down so it nearly touches. Amanda tells Kath she won't work for Roo any more and Kath brings the press up. They all start laughing as Amanda runs out, muttering: "You'll get yours, you bitches!"

Ann gives Su a rap on the knuckles after hearing Rodney's elaborated version of the fight. Then she lets her go.

Rodney: But Mrs. Reynolds, surely you're not....

Ann
(sternly): I've made my decision Mr. Adams. Now, as for you Morgan.

Roo: I was jumped on, all I was doing was defending myself.

Ann: And I suppose you did nothing whatsoever to provoke it?

Roo: That's right.

Ann: I understand you've been getting several visits from your solicitor lately.

Roo: So what?

Ann: A Mr. Bradshaw I understand?

Roo: Yeah, and?

Ann: And... this is the same Mr. Bradshaw who kidnapped O'Leary's daughter, held us hostage and then killed 2 people.

Roo: His private life's his own affair, got nothing to do with me.

Ann: It is when he isn't really a solicitor. I could have you done for accessory to a kidnap.

Roo: You can't do that! You've got no proof.

Ann: I've got all the proof I need, and one more step out of line and I'll do just that. Now get out of my sight!

Meg is in reception when Joyce arrives.

Meg: Joyce! What on earth are you doing here?

Joyce: I'm ok Meg, just don't fuss please.

Joyce walks into the corridor and stops to settle herself.

Meg gets on the phone to Ann and lets her know that Joyce has arrived. Ann can't believe her ears.
Just then Karen enters with a police escort, and Meg tells Ann she's got to go.
Meg processes her in and Karen answers all the questions quietly. She is there until her trial but has been charged with manslaughter.

Su meets Roo in her cell and tells her that she can keep the top dog position if she does her one favour.

Roo: It's mine anyway.

Su: Well let's just say I won't give you any more trouble.

Roo: What is it you want?

Su: Cynthia Leach's address!

Ann sees Chrissie in solitary and tells her she'll certainly lose her parole, and will almost definitely get a few extra months added to her sentence on top of that.

Chrissie: If that bastard had let me know that Derek had been to see me then none of this would have happened.

Ann: What are you talking about?

Chrissie: That Rodney bastard.

Ann: You mean Mr. Adams.

Chrissie: Yeah 'im. He wouldn't pass on the message that Elizabeth was ok, if he had, well I wouldn't have needed to escape would I? But I swear I never hit him Mrs. Reynolds.

Ann looks furious.

Joyce is in the main prison outside the cells. She breaks down crying and is overheard by Su, who takes the opportunity to offer Joyce a deal. Su says she'll make sure Cynthia owns up to her part in the kidnapping and Mervin's death, but she has to help her get out of Wentworth for a couple of hours. Joyce says no at first but is soon persuaded as Su reminds her how Mervin died.

Karen is taken to solitary for the night, by a non-speaking officer. Chrissie overhears her and tries talking to her, but Karen isn't in the mood for chatting and sits in silence.

Ann has got Rodney in her office and asks him if Derek Latham gave him a message to give to Chrissie. He gets all defensive and tells her that he didn't get chance to pass the message on before she hit him. Ann doesn't believe him and warns him that he's on his final warning. Rodney slams the door on his way out.

Su returns to the laundry and leaves Roo alone on the press. She starts folding some sheets, and doesn't argue when Roo puts her on the drier.

Sheila: So it's true then?

Su: What?

Sheila: You've let her take over. Just like that?

Kath: I thought we were supposed to be friends.

Roo: Can we have more work and less chatter from you lot please.

Sheila: Are you going to let her get away with that?

Su: She's the boss.

Roo bursts out laughing, then she gets Brenda to collect money from them all for protection.

Sheila: Well I'm not paying.

Kath: Neither am I.

Su: Just pay up.

Her mates can't believe it as she reaches in her pocket and produces some money to give to Brenda.

Sheila: I don't believe this.

Su whispers to her that it's only for now. Then she says everything will be taken care of in good time!
Grandma refuses to pay up, but Roo says she'll get her another way: it needn't be a bashing. Sheila looks at Su in a concerned manner.

Meg is in the staffroom, eating her lunch when Tristian walks in.

Meg: Tristian! I didn't expect to see you again, well not before the funeral anyway.

Tristian: I couldn't wait that long. I insist on taking you out to dinner tonight.

Meg: Well how could I refuse an offer like that.

Tristian: Great, I'll pick you up at about seven.

Meg: Great.

Tristian: How's Karen?

Meg: Not too good I'm afraid. I don't think Greg's death has sunk in yet, plus the fact that this place holds so many memories for her.

Tristian: Any chance I can see her?

Meg: Well she's in solitary at the moment, so she can't have visitors until tomorrow.

Tristian: Is that a good idea? I'd have thought she'd be better off with people around her.

Meg: We have to do it with all prisoners charged with murder. In case they try to harm themselves.

Tristian: OK well I'll visit her tomorrow then.

Meg: You don't want a job here do you? We really need a prison doctor here.

Tristian: Sorry but I'm just too busy with my own practice, and I'm not sure that I could cope with a load of sex-starved women anyway.

Meg laughs.

Inspector Grace is in Ann's office.

Grace: I understand why she did it, but at the end of the day one of my men is dead and somebody has to pay for that.

Ann: I realise that Inspector, but surely you could do something to help her.

Grace: Well I can't deny I'd probably have done the same thing in her boat, so I'll see what I can do. Maybe she'll get off on diminished responsibility or something.

Ann: I'd appreciate that Inspector.

Joyce meets Su in the corridor as arranged and tells her she's on kitchen duty. Joyce escorts her there and tells the officer on duty she'll take over now. She looks around the kitchen and remembers Mervin.

Joyce: I'm sorry, I don't think I can do this.

Su: You can't back out now, this is for Mervin remember?

Joyce nods. Su empties the bin and takes the rubbish outside. Joyce follows her. They get behind the skip, where Joyce hands her a bag. Inside is an officer's uniform, which Su hurriedly changes into. Su looks over and sees two junior officers heading towards the gate.

Su: This is it.

Joyce: Just make sure you're back in time. You've got 2 hours.

Su: Don't worry. Now I've got to go now, just make sure you don't lose it ok? For Mervin?

Su rushes to catch up with the two junior officers and manages to get out behind them.

Gate guard: See ya ladies.

Su nods as she gets out.

Joyce goes back to the kitchen and tells the four background prisoners that she's put Su on cleaning duties as she was insubordinate.

Rodney is collecting Karen's tray from solitary and tells her she's just a common criminal now and no better than the rest of the scum. Karen loses her rag and pushes Rodney against the wall. He tells her he'll report her unless she agrees to have sex with him. Karen spits in his face and Rodney goes off to report her.

Su goes to the address that Roo gave her and puts a note through the letter-box. Then she hides around the corner and makes sure Cynthia reads it. It reads: "Meet me in the old warehouse off Elizabeth Avenue ASAP. If you don't I'll see you go down for years. Sid." Cynthia looks around and then hurries back inside.

Ann tells Meg that Rodney has laid an assault charge against Karen. Meg can't believe she wasn't provoked and Ann says she is inclined to agree.

Ann: Oh damn that man. I'm just about fed up with him.

Meg: If we don't watch it we could have another Joan on our hands.

Ann: Heaven forbid!

Roo and Brenda lay in wait for Grandma in the shower-block. They grab her when she walks through the door and ask her for her protection money. Grandma refuses in no uncertain terms, so they decide to flush her head down the toilet a couple of times!

Ann tries to talk Rodney out of laying charges against Karen. He refuses and threatens to go over her head if she doesn't lay the charge. They end up having a slanging match and Ann tells Rodney he's a nasty piece of work, then tells him to get out of her office. When he's gone she gives out a furious "Damn!".

Cynthia cautiously enters the old warehouse. There are no other buildings around for mile, it really is a deserted spot. A rat runs past Cynthia and she jumps.

Cynthia (whispers): Sid, are you there? How did you get out?

Su suddenly appears from behind the door and shuts the door on them both. Cynthia looks almost pleased to see her.

Cynthia: Well O'Leary, the uniform really suits you, I suppose you've come to avenge your slut of a daughter.

Su: You bitch!
She pushes Cynthia to the ground.

Cynthia: Face it O'Leary. She begged us for the drugs, and she begged Sid to screw her!

Su picks up an old can she has been hiding, and chucks the contents over Cynthia.
Cynthia looks quite nervous now, as she realises it is petrol, and gets up and tries to get out of the door. Su gets a match out of her pocket and lights it. Cynthia tells Su she'll never get away with it.

Su: Who's ever going to know it was me? As far as everyone else is concerned I've been in jail the whole time.

Cynthia: You must have had some help.

Su: Ah yes, but I'm sure Mrs. Pringle won't say anything and incriminate herself.

Cynthia: You don't expect me to believe that.

Su: She hates you as much as I do, after what your mate done to Mervin.

The first match goes out and Su lights another one.

Cynthia: Please I'm begging you. I'll do anything.

Su: Too little, too late.

Su throws the match onto Cynthia and she starts running around in a ball of flames, soon the whole warehouse is on fire. Su gets out and bolts the door behind her, then she listens to the screams for a minute before running off..........
