PREVIOUSLY.......................................

Rodney has got his loan and is counting the money on his kitchen table. There is a knock at the door and Rodney goes to answer it. Two masked men with baseball bats are at the door and they force their way in. Rodney is told to change his story about Chrissie bashing him or else he gets an even worse bashing.

Masked man 1 (Mick): If Chrissie gets it, then so do you.

He sees all the money on the side and picks it up.

Mick: And we'll take that too, as compensation for damages already done to Chrissie's parole.

Rodney: No! I need that money. Please don't take it.

Mick: Shut up, and just remember what I said.

They take the money and leave. Rodney starts going mad.

Marty is in reception when Merle Jones enters. Marty is surprised, but pleased to see her.

Merle: Hello Mr. Jackson. Can I see Kath please?

Meg is talking about Wentworth again, and Tristian looks to be getting agitated.

Meg: Perhaps I should just let Erica have the job, but I feel I could really make a difference to those women. Judy's idea is.....

Tristian: Could you be quiet about Wentworth for 2 minutes.

Meg: I'm sorry, but it is a big step for me.

Tristian: This isn't how it was meant to be.

Meg looks over to the bar and her eyes remain in one spot.

Tristian: Meg, will you marry me?

Meg hasn't heard, she is too busy looking at a girl behind the bar, it is none other than Wentworth escapee - Cindy Simpson!.........................................

EPISODE 767

Tristian: Meg, did you hear what I said?

Meg: Will you excuse me for a minute.

Meg goes up to the barman working at the other side of the bar, who just happens to be the manager. Meg asks him about the barmaid, and he tells her she's only been there a week. He also says that if she doesn't buck her ideas up she won't last a second week. Meg then tells him that she is an escapee. The manager looks over at Cindy, who suddenly sees Meg. Cindy drops the glass she is wiping and runs out of the back door. The manager goes after her, followed by Meg. Tristian asks her what is going on and she tells him to call the police as there is an escapee there.

Kath goes to the interview room, where she hugs Merle and tells her she was really worried when she ran away.

Merle: I'm not going back there Kath. It's horrible, they all hate me.

Kath: I'm sure that's not true Merle, they were very worried about you - weren't they Mr. Jackson?

Marty: That's true Merle. The mother came here to see if you'd been here.

Merle: Well you mustn't tell them I've been here.

Kath: You've got nowhere else to go Merle. You'll end up back in here if you don't go back.

Merle: I'd rather be in here with you Kath. I hate it out there.

Kath looks at Marty in despair.

Cindy tries climbing over the back wall outside. The manager grabs her legs and she kicks out at him. He falls over. Meg yells at her to stop and Cindy tells her where to go. She gets over the wall, but falls the other side and hurts her ankle. Tristian has come out, and he jumps over the wall and grabs her. Cindy bites his hand and he lets go of her, she kicks Meg when she gets in her way and limps off as the police arrive and she has nowhere else to go. Tristian asks Meg if she's alright, as the police cart Cindy off.

Rodney enters Amanda's cell while she is doing her hair. He tells her that some mates of Chrissie's stole the money off him, and he wants her to find out who it was. Amanda tells him she's not finding out anything until she gets the money.

Rodney: But I haven't got it any more.

Amanda: Then you'll just have to get another loan won't you.

Chrissie has got another visit from Mick, and he tells her that Brenda wouldn't let him see Elizabeth.

Chrissie: Well nothing would surprise me from that bitch. Don't worry I'll get Derek to sort it. God I can't wait to get out of this dump.

Mick: Yeah well that might happen sooner than you think. I paid Rodney a visit last night. I think he'll be changing his story very soon.

Chrissie: Oh Mick I hope so.

The women are all in the dining room when Sheila walks in. She goes over to Su, but Su immediately ignores her and asks Kath how her visit with Merle went. Sheila shouts out that she's innocent, and they all start chanting "lagger, lagger, lagger, lagger.....". Marty tells them to be quiet but they get louder, then Sheila slams her plate down and runs out.

Karen: Are you sure she is a lagger?

Su: Positive. The cops found out something that only she knew, and we found 2 bottles of brandy that Adams was seen giving to her.

Chrissie: What are we going to do about it? That's what I wanna know.

Su: We send her to coventry.

Chrissie: Is that it? People have been killed for less than what she did.

Su: Nobody touches her, okay? She's had a bashing, she won't do it again.

Chrissie: You think so? Once a lagger always a lagger.

Su: Chrissie! You've been warned. Anybody who touches her - or speaks to her - will have me to answer to. Got it?

Chrissie: Yeah yeah.

Meg signs in at Wentworth. Wendy says she heard what happened, and asks if she's alright. Meg says she's fine, even though Tristian wasn't too happy about her coming back straight away. Just then Cindy is brought in by a police escort, and protesting loudly that she shouldn't have been caught. She sees Meg and goes for her. The policewoman pulls her off, and Meg tells the officer processing Cindy to see that she is placed in solitary. Cindy shouts after Meg that she will get her back if its the last thing she does.

Rodney goes to see Vic, and asks for another loan of two grand.

Vic: You haven't spent it already?

Rodney: I've just had some extra expenses that's all.

Vic: Well you realise the repayments will be double?

Rodney: Yes, but I'm pretty much guaranteed a promotion at work so I'll have no problem paying it back.

Vic: Plus interest of course.

Rodney: Do I get the loan then?

Vic: Yes you can have the loan. Come back this evening. I hope for the sake of your health that you can make the repayments.

Rodney looks uncomfortable at this.

In the laundry, Sheila is trying to talk to Su but she is having none of it.

Su: Hey Chrissie. Go and get the dirty sheets from the cells will ya.

Chrissie: Oh do I have to? Kath will go, won't you Kath?

Kath: You were asked. I've got to go and see the governor anyway.

Kath leaves the laundry.

Chrissie: Great, now we're another pair of hands down - and where the hell's Grandma?

Su: Well if you go for the sheets you'll find out won't you.

Chrissie: Oh leave off Su, my legs are tired.

Amanda: Too used to being on your back, ay Chrissie?

This raises a few laughs.

Sheila: For heaven sake, I'll take the bloody trolley.

Sheila pushes the trolley out into the corridor, and is muttering to herself. She then enters one of the cells and stops, with her mouth open.

Sheila: It's you. You're the slasher.....

Kath is in the governor's office discussing Merle. Marty is present.

Meg: I just don't see what we can do.

Kath: If Merle doesn't go back to the Watsons she'll end up back in here.

Meg: Judy Bryant and her partner have some flats available for ex-prisoners. It would only be temporary but I'll see if we can get her into one of those.

Kath: That would be ideal. I'm just a bit worried about her being on her own.

Meg: Well Lorna Young has just moved into one of them, she used to get on quite well with Merle. Perhaps they could share for a while.

Kath: It could be alright - if Lorna agrees. But I was thinking more long term.

Meg: Well it would be a start.

Kath: What do you think my chances of getting an early parole on compassionate grounds would be?

Meg: Well I don't know. I could look into it for you if you like.

Kath: Do you think I stand a chance?

Meg: Look, I won't make any promises, but leave it with me and I'll see what I can do.

Kath: Thank you Mrs. Morris. I just hope Merle doesn't get into any trouble in the meantime.

Merle is in a sweet shop when she picks up a handful of chocolate bars in front of the owner. Then she walks to the door with them.

Shopkeeper: Excuse me miss. I think you forgot to pay for those.

Merle: No I didn't. I wanted to steal them.

Shopkeeper: Just put them back and get out of my shop.

Merle: Aren't you going to call the police?

Shopkeeper: What for, you'll only get a slap on the wrist.

Merle: Nobody's going to slap me and get away with it. I'll bop him.

Shopkeeper: Just get out.

He ushers Merle out of the shop and she shouts "Pig!" to him.

Back in the laundry, and Grandma turns up.

Su: Nice of you to join us.

Grandma: Rack off. No young upstart tells me what to do.

Su: I wouldn't dream of it.

Chrissie: 'Ere, where the 'ell's Sheila got to with the laundry trolley?

Su: Who cares. The longer she's gone the better.

Karen: Are you really sure that she's the lagger?

Su: Positive. She's the only one that could have done it, and we found the booze that Adams gave her.

Amanda smiles as she works the sewing machine. Karen notices this and looks thoughtful. Just then Kath returns.

Chrissie: Hiya kath, how did ya go with Mrs. M?

Kath: Not bad. She's going to try and arrange an early parole for me, so I can look after Merle.

Chrissie: You lucky cow. How did you manage that?

Kath: She's only going to look into it. I haven't got it yet.

Chrissie: Well I wish someone would arrange it for me. I'm going to be stuck in here for years 'cos of that Adams bastard.

Su: I thought you said Mick was sorting that out for you.

Chrissie: Don't tell the whole world.

Su: Well the way you've been shouting your mouth off, I didn't think it would matter. Besides, nobody here's going to lag - right girls?

There is a chorus of "Right!". Amanda looks down at the sewing on her machine and smiles again.

Meg is at the governor's desk, eating a sandwich when there is a knock at the door.

Meg: Come in.

Erica walks in. Meg puts her sandwich down.

Erica: Meg. I'm so sorry about the other day. It was just that I was worried about what I was going to do, I shouldn't have taken it out on you. Of course you should apply for the position.

Meg: That's OK. Let's just forget it.

Erica: I am glad we've sorted that out. Whoever gets the job will........

Just then Janet Walsh enters without knocking.

Janet: Oh Mrs. Davidson, I didn't realise you'd be here.

Erica: That's OK, I was just leaving.

Janet: Actually you might as well stay. I've come to a decision regarding the governorship.

Meg and Erica excange glances.

Merle is running through the streets pretending to be Captain Marvellous, and almost knocking several people over. Just then she notices a brick on the ground, and with a glint in her eye she picks it up and is about to throw it through a shop window, when somebody grabs her arm. Merle turns round and sees that the person grabbing her is Marty Jackson.

Judy enters reception.

Wendy: Hello Judy, how are things?

Judy: Oh you know. Pretty good actually. Is Mrs. Morris in her office?

Wendy: Oh, she is, but the department head's in with her at the moment.

Judy: I'd better not disturb her then. Do you think it would be possible for me to speak to a couple of the women.

Wendy: I should think that would be alright. I'll get an officer to take you through.

Back in the governor's office.

Janet: I'm pleased to say that the governorship of Wentworth has been appointed to somebody in this room.

Meg and Erica await, anxiously.

Janet: The position has been awarded to myself....

Meg/Erica: You!

Meg: But, how can you take the job, you're head of department?

Janet: The department is having a huge shake up. There will be no need for a head of department any more. My new job is to look after Wentworth as a whole. However, each wing is to have its own governor and deputy, but any major decisions will have to go through me.

Meg: So the wing governors will have no authority really?

Janet: Yes. They will be responsible for the everyday running of their individual wing, but anything major will have to be passed through me. It won't be any different to before in that respect. I can be very reasonable you know, and I won't block anything if you can back up your request with a valid argument.

Erica: So who will be filling these new posts?

Janet: Well Mrs. Morris. I'd like you to continue running H-Block. You can appoint your own deputy.

Erica: Well done Meg.

Meg: Thank you.

Janet: Erica. I'm sorry, but the other governors have already been appointed. Thank you for your time.

Erica storms out, leaving Meg looking uneasy.

Meg: Erica really was an excellent governor.

Janet: She's let the department down on a couple of occasions. I'm sorry but I need my governors to be dedicated.

Meg: Yes but.....

Janet: I'm sorry Mrs. Morris, but there isn't time to discuss it now. There's something much more major happening that I have to let you know about.

Judy is talking to a couple of the background prisoners in the rec-room when Su and Kath walk in. Su goes over to Judy, while Kath sits next to Karen.

Karen: Are you sure Amanda's on the level?

Kath: Why, what makes you say that?

Karen: I don't know. It's just a feeling I've got.

Kath: Well I wasn't sure to start with, but believe me she's genuine.

Karen looks unconvinced.

Su: Hiya Jude. Is Charlotte not with you today?

Judy: No she's sorting out a job for Lorna Young. Mind you, it's not easy finding someone to employ an armed robber who's just served twelve years.

Su: How do you think she'll go?

Judy: Oh she'll get her something temporary. Let's just hope it leads to something full-time. Did you want to see Charlotte, you can always speak to me you know.

Su: Oh no. I was just making conversation that was all. I'll see you later.

Su goes back over to Kath and Karen. Amanda and Chrissie are with them now.

Chrissie: What I can't make out is, why hasn't he got me off the hook yet. Mick said he was really scared when he paid him a visit.

Amanda: He probably wants to make you sweat.

Karen: I think you should be careful what you say Chrissie. Walls have ears in this place.

Amanda: Oh, nobody here would lag.

Chrissie: 'Ere where's Sheila got to? I haven't seen her since she went for the sheets earlier.

Su: Roo's been pretty quiet too. You don't think they're plotting something together do you?

Kath: Either that, or she's gone over the wall.

Karen: She could have. We have been giving her a hard time lately.

Su: It's no more than she deserves. She could have got me and Mrs. Pringle in real trouble with her lagging.

Karen: We still don't know she lagged.

Chrissie: Oh not that again. She has to have lagged, and look how she was caught with that booze.

Amanda: Well if she has gone over the wall, the screws haven't noticed yet.

Su: Well we're not covering for her. If she has escaped, she's on her own.

Back to the governor's office, and Meg is shocked by what she hears.

Janet: You will be aware that Wentworth has been extended somewhat recently.

Meg: yes.

Janet: And you will have heard about the new 'Block J' which will be segregated from the rest of Wentworth.

Meg: I had heard something about it being the new isolation block.

Janet: Well the prisoners will be isolated, but it will house the most dangerous criminals - those for whom there is nowhere else to go. They will spend the largest part of their time in their cells, and will not be able to mix with the other prisoners.

Meg: It seems rather harsh.

Janet: It's largely for their own protection. Some of these prisoners will be child killers, some of them may be ex prison-officers. Anyway it won't be your problem, the block will have its own governor, who will be arriving next week with the first batch of prisoners.

Meg: Is it anyone we know?

Janet: He's an ex-Blackmoor officer called Les Murray. It should all run smoothly with him in charge.

Meg: Well let's hope so.

Janet: Oh there is one other thing. Joyce Pringle has gone on extended leave for a few weeks. She's gone away somewhere with her son until she decides about her future.

Meg: She'll be missed, but I think its probably best for her.

Janet: Obviously you'll have to decide on a deputy governor, but I'll leave that to you.

Roo catches Amanda alone in her cell and tells her she wants to know what the others are up to.

Amanda: I don't know anything yet Roo, I'm sorry.

Roo gets mad with Amanda and twists her arm behind her back.

Roo: I don't like people who string me along Spencer. You'd better tell me something now or I break your arm.

Amanda: I only know that the women have got it in for Sheila at the moment.

Roo: I'd already worked that much out.

Amanda: Well it was her who's been doing the stabbings, and apparently you're next.

Roo: You'd better not be lying to me.

Amanda: I'm not, now will you let me go.

Rodney comes in at this point and asks what's going on.

Roo: Nothing I was just leaving. I'll be seeing you very soon though Amanda.

Roo leaves.

Rodney: What did she want?

Amanda: Have you got my money?

Rodney hands over the money.

Rodney: It's all there, and you'd better keep it in a safe place. I'm dead if I can't make the repayments, and on my wage that would be impossible.

Amanda: Well you're sure of a promotion if you catch the slasher in action.

Rodney: Who is it?

Amanda: Roo Morgan. She just told me, and Sheila is going to be her next victim.

Rodney smiles at this and walks out.

Amanda: Sucker!

She hides the money in a shoe in her locker, but somebody is watching through the door.

Charlotte is in Meg's office with Marty, and they are discussing Merle.

Meg: I'm glad she's staying with Lorna now, I just hope she'll be alright.

Charlotte: Well Lorna seems to be getting on her feet. I don't think there wil be any problems.

Marty: Do you think there's any possibility of Kath getting an early parole?

Meg: I don't know. I'm not too hopeful, although I didn't let on to her. It's lucky she got off the murder charge after her last escape or there'd be no hope.

Marty: It will still be on her file though won't it?

Meg: Yes. I'll speak to my friend on the parole board tomorrow and see what she thinks.

Charlotte: From what I've heard, she never should have been locked up in the first place.

Meg: Unfortunately there's nothing we can do about that. Anyway leave it with me.

There is a knock at the door and Tristian enters. Marty escorts Charlotte out.

Tristian: OK. I'm going you ask you now while I've got your full attention.

Meg: What's that?

Tristian: Will you.....

Suddenly the phone rings and Meg answers it. Tristian leaves before Meg can stop him.

Amanda goes back to her cell and pulls her shoe out of her locker to check the money. She realises it has gone and throws the shoe on the floor in temper.

Su goes into her cell and sees Grandma has left her bed in a mess. She mutters "Stupid cow" as she picks up her cardigan. Then she opens the wardrobe door and shrieks as Sheila's body falls out - her throat obviously cut.

Roo is walking towards the library, but someone is following her. She gets to the library and realises it is in darkness. She reaches for the light, but somebody stabs her in the shoulder. Roo grabs the person's arm and grabs the knife off her, then stabs the mystery person. Just then the light comes on. Roo turns round and see Rodney has just walked in and is looking at the floor shocked. Roo turns round and sees Grandma lying on the floor with a knife in her chest...................................
