Welcome (pic: Maggie Kirkpatrick)
"Prisoner for me was both a blessing and a curse. It was the longed for big break on the small screen, and the adulation that came with it was beyond my wildest expectations. It took me to the West End of London, and I know Ferguson continues to be an iconic character for viewers across the world in countless repeat sessions.

Escaping the spectre has been hard but my real passion has always been the theatre where the notoriety of television success has helped put a few bums on seats!

I still retain some strong friendships from my days on Prisoner - Carole Skinner and I have been best friends since the 1960s and remain so. Elspeth Ballantyne, Joy Westmore and Annie Phelan and I see as often as our busy schedules allow. I shall always be proud of being part of such a hard hitting show that at times pulled no punches and allowed us to see women on television as real - sometimes flawed - people, not just token wives or bit of added glamour.

My career has thankfully continued at a pace where theatre roles in 'The Shoe-Horn Sonata' (my favourite) and currently Madame Morrible in 'Wicked the Musical' are a far cry from my years at Wentworth Detention Centre! I shall always be grateful to the enthusiasm of the fans even though a quarter of a century has passed since I first entered that infamous reception area.

Good luck to Barry and Scott at 'On The Inside' for continued success. May they never end up in solitary!!

Best wishes
MAGGIE KIRKPATRICK (Joan 'The Freak' Ferguson)"
