Following Judy Bryant's return to Wentworth as an inmate in episode 403, a replacement is urgently needed at Driscoll House to continue managing the running of it.
Initially mistaken by Wally Wallace as Mrs Dobbs, Ann reassures him that she'll be perfect for the job however when it is revealed that there has been a mixup with the names Wally wonders whether Alice is suitable at all to take over from Judy.
She comes down hard on the residents of Driscoll by enforcing a set of very strict rules and regulations which cause upset among the women living there. It also creates a problem for the working relationship between Alice and Wally, who considers leaving the house.
When Alice slaps a resident, she reveals to Wally that she has been the victim of an abusive husband so lost patience with Jody when she got hysterical about her own husband.
In episode 407, the drunken husband of new resident Clare Adams arrives at Driscoll House demanding to see his wife - armed with a gun. The gun is shot and Alice is wounded in the arm - she is not seriously harmed so returns to work immediately.
Wally sees this as a huge break in the ice and decides that it's time for him to leave, now that the residents have warmed to Alice's presence. The rules are relaxed and Alice begins to become a friend of the women rather than an enemy.
Off-screen, Alice later has a nervous breakdown and Myra Desmond temporarily takes over the running of the house in episode 429.
