Ann Yates has seen both sides of the bars. Initially working as an officer at Wentworth, Ann ended up on the other side of the bars due to her drug dealing. Sally Lee was her first victim of this crime, committing suicide due to withdrawal.
Surprisingly, even Bea smith has had dealings with Ann - Bea is let into Lynn Warner's cell on Lynn's first night so Bea can threaten her.
Ann is eventually caught doing deals with the inmates, after smuggling in contraceptives for Marilyn Mason.
After not being seen for a while, Ann bumps into Vera Bennett in a pub, and they end up back at Ann's place. Ann eventually introduces Vera to George Lucas, her supplier.
When Ann finally gets arrested for dealing she's sent to Wentworth, but a story is concocted about her being arrested for receiving stolen goods so the other women don't try to kill her in revenge for Sally. Of course the women eventually find out Ann's real reason for being inside and Bea sets out to get her. The two women fight for a moment in a cell, Ann pulls out a knife she's stolen and stabs Bea in her side and flees.
Running through the prison searching for somewhere to hide from the other women, Ann jumps into one of the driers and closes the door over so not to be seen. When searching the prison, Vera unwittingly seals Ann's fate as she closes the door to the drier - and with no lock on the inside to open it and not wanting to make noise so the women find her, Ann suffocates in the drier.
