Bookkeeper and Administrator at the local shoe factory, Barbara first appears in episode 300 interviewing Doreen Burns and Susie Driscoll for a job vacancy. Susie is not successful but Doreen is offered a job and starts straight away. Unfortunately for Doreen, when she sees a suspicious load of shoes being loaded into a van out of sight and starts asking questions, Barbara is instructed to sack her.
Barbara is made an offer she can't refuse when her boyfriend Phillip Langdon invites her to buy into a land deal. Barbara steals some money from the safe at the factory to fund the deal, with the plan of paying it back later. What she doesn't know is that her boss, George Logan, has problems of his own and decides to set fire to the factory for an insurance claim on the same evening that Barbara is raiding the safe (episode 303). The nightwatchman is killed in the fire and the police are soon looking for a murder suspect.
When Barbara realises that the fire has destroyed everything she thinks that she won't have to pay back the money she stole after all, but George has other ideas and plants some of the money he stole inside Barbara's house. When the police come to search the place they find the money and Barbara is charged with arson, theft and murder and sent to prison.
Barbara reveals all to the police and has the charges of arson and murder dropped but is still facing a 6 month sentence for theft. When Phillip brings in the papers on the land deal for Barbara to sign, she keeps a copy but officer Joan Ferguson confiscates them realising how useful they are and Barbara has no option than to do as Joan asks or her dodgy dealings will be made public.
Barbara's hands are tied as Joan is pulling all of the strings so she decides to turn the tables and arranges for Joan's house to be burgled so she can have a copy of something important and secret to Joan. The plan works and Barbara ends up in receipt of some very personal and revealing diaries written by Joan (episode 321), which hold some key information about the bashings she has arranged, the money she has raised and her affair with an inmate in her previous prison.
Bea Smith finds out what Barbara has so convinces her to trick Joan that the diaries are hidden in isolation - of course they're not, but Bea is waiting so she can kill Joan while the other women are causing a diversion with a series of small fires (episode 326). The fires get out of control and the whole prison is evacuated.
Barbara breaks into Erica's office, where the diaries are really hidden, in an attempt to save them from being burnt but she is overcome by the smoke from the fire and collapses - clutching the diaries in her hands. Barbara's dead body is later recovered from the prison and the diaries have been destroyed.
