Bill is first seen in the second episode, having breakfast with his prison officer wife Meg. They’re discussing Meg giving up her job at the prison and become a fulltime housewife and mother, when they discover their teenage son Marty hasn’t slept in his bed. When Marty eventually arrives home, he claims he spent the night with a friend from school. That evening, Marty announces he wants to move out and live with his girlfriend, Donna.
In the third episode, Bill interviews Chrissie Latham about which area of the prison she would like to work in. During this interview, Chrissie admits she has feelings for Bill and kisses him passionately. When Bea Smith returns to Wentworth after shooting her husband, inmate Franky Doyle triggers a riot, due to wanting to take Bea’s place in the role of top dog. During the riot, Meg is held captive for several hours.
After a while, Bill manages to persuade Franky to let Meg go. Bea, Franky and the other women begin to fight, while electrician Eddie Cook looks on. During all the activity, Bill is stabbed with a pair of scissors. After being rushed to hospital in an ambulance, Bill tragically dies in episode 4. The police interview Franky, Eddie and inmate Lynn Warner. Eddie reveals that he saw who stabbed Bill to Marilyn Mason, so the other women put pressure on him to tell them the truth.
Chrissie turns out to be responsible for Bill’s murder after being forced to confess by Bea. Meg, Marty, governor Erica Davidson and prison doctor Greg Miller attend Bill’s funeral. On a happier note, Bill’s role of social worker is taken over by Jean Vernon, who actually moves in with Meg a little later on in the series.
