Crime: Embezzlement

Middleclass Clara is a businesswoman and a very talented cook. She first appears in episode 30, when Steve Wilson introduces her to Jean Vernon as a sponsor for a halfway house project. Clara returns to Steve in desperation, as she thinks she’s going to be arrested. She comes clean to Steve and tells him she’s embezzled $254,780 from her own business to pay for her charitable projects. She is taken to court and sent to Wentworth on remand in episode 31.

Clara makes an enemy with Noeline Bourke, after Noeline takes some her belongings in episode 32. In the following episode, Steve tells Clara that she is due to be released on bail, but Clara says she will be happy to stay in Wentworth until her trial. In episode 35, Clara announces that it’s her birthday and suggests having a party. After being informed that this would include a cookery lesson for the other women, Erica Davidson approves of the idea.

During the lesson, Clara gives Erica a list of ingredients that she’ll need for the recipes. Lizzie Birdsworth and Doreen Anderson smuggle some of the ingredients out of the kitchen to make a batch of booze. Once the mixture is made, Noeline demands a share of it. Erica and all the other women attend Clara’s party. After Noeline is found drunk in the laundry, Erica investigates who is responsible for making the grog. Clara takes the blame and is put into solitary in episode 36, but is soon released.

When Marianne De Vere agrees to finance the halfway house and donates a colour television set to the women, a barbeque is held in the prison grounds, which Clara is given permission to do the catering for. Unfortunately in episode 37, the new television is found smashed by none-other than Noeline.

After a while, some of the women begin to look upon Clara as their new top dog. In episode 39, Mr Goodwin (the visiting justice) arrives at Wentworth. He arranges for Clara to be transferred to the remand section in Fairlea prison. Clara is last seen saying goodbye to the women in the laundry.
