Edith is first introduced to the series in episode 44, when she borrows some milk from her next-door neighbour, Wentworth inmate Joyce Martin’s aunt Madge.

She lives with her bed-ridden partner Horrie, but are due to be evicted from their home, which they eventually are. Rather than be parted by the Salvation Army, they decide to sleep rough, but Horrie doesn’t survive the night.

After becoming drunk, Edith smashes the window of a memorial home, leading to the first of her several arrests (episode 45). Once the police sergeant pays her bail, she moves into a boarding house with less than satisfactory rates and conditions, which Edith must agree to. Following this, she attempts to shoplift from a supermarket, but gets caught by the manager.

Edith’s given charity money by the police and released once again. With a threat of being thrown out of the house, Edith lashes out and smashes up her room with an umbrella, and even attacks her acid-tongued landlady.

The outburst results in Edith receiving a 7-day sentence in Wentworth for damaging private property and assault. Whilst in prison, Edith becomes good friends with Lizzie Birdsworth. In episode 46, Jim Fletcher shows his softer side as he tells Edith what to expect in Wentworth, and also allows her to move in with Lizzie.

Social worker Jean Vernon handles Edith’s accommodation for after her release in episode 48. In the following episode, Edith seems very reluctant to leave Wentworth, but governor Erica Davidson says it wouldn’t be possible for her to stay.

The night before her release, Edith sadly dies in her sleep. Jim puts forward the money to arrange a decent funeral.
