 MARIE WINTER
Played by Maggie Millar
Snowy haired Marie Winter is introduced to us during episode 197 when Bea is transferred to a country prison. They quickly become enemies and Marie teaches Bea a lesson by drugging her soup with 'magic mushrooms' which causes Bea to hallucinate. It is decided that Bea is not suited to an open prison like this, so is transferred again not long after.
They briefly meet again in episode 245 when Marie is transferred to Wentworth just as Bea is leaving for her operation. Marie orchestrates a huge riot inside the prison, during which the building is wrecked and two officers are taken as hostage. She blames the riot on Sandy Edwards but is transferred out of Wentworth in episode 269 with Kate Peterson (who kicks up such a fuss about being left alone with her that Kate stays in Wentworth!).
Some time later she is transferred to Wentworth yet again but this time is into hard drugs and manages to smuggle some cocaine into the prison with her. She immediately takes over as top dog and manages to use Joan Ferguson as cover when she has more drugs being sent into the prison. Joan turns a blind eye to this as she is planning a take over of her own, in the form of becoming new prison governor - she needs as much negative press on Ann Reynolds as possible.
Marie also blackmails young officer Heather Rogers into bringing drugs into the prison in order to keep her family safe from harm. Marie starts another riot, on the orders of Joan to get Ann sacked. Marie sees this as an excellent opportunity to kill Myra Desmond who is locked in solitary. She takes Reb up to solitary with her to help take care of Myra, but Reb gets cold feet and refuses to help. Angry, Marie pushes Reb down the stairs where she is seriously injured. Marie is given a further two years added to her sentence for her part in the riot.
Marie's escape is a favourite with fans. She demands that Joan helps her to get out of the prison in style. After bashing Reb in the shower block, Marie escapes dangling from a helicopter which Joan has arranged, during an exercise period. The women look on in shock as Marie flies off into the distance, only to be caught in episode 479 and sent to Blackmoor.
