Merle Jones MERLE JONES
Played by Rosanne Hull-Brown

First Ep: 625
Last Ep: 692
Total Featured: 66 episodes
Crime: Murder
Close to: Kath Maxwell, Rita Connors, Marty Jackson
Current Status: Assumingly still serving sentence at Wentworth

Transferred from C Block by Joan Ferguson in episode 625 to act as Kath Maxwell's muscle. Merle's low mental age is often the source of bullying by some of the other women who give her the nickname of 'Loony'. Although Merle doesn't behave her real age, her physical strength is often a major problem - she loses her temper very easily and can hurt others (and herself) without much effort.

Kath initially uses Merle as her muscle but soon realises that she's just a child and they become good friends, with Kath giving her a great deal of attention after the death of her own daughter.

Threatened with a transfer to a mental institution, Merle uses many chances but after an escape attempt with Kath goes wrong Merle has a breakdown and leaves Wentworth for a mental hospital. Kath is still on the run at this point (687) and can't live with the fact that she has caused Merle to be in the place that she fears the most. She turns up at the hospital in disguise to try and take Merle with her but Merle is so upset that Kath is found by the hospital staff and soon ends up back in Wentworth.

In an effort started by Marty Jackson, teacher Tom Lucas cuts through a lot of red tape and Merle is returned back to Wentworth too but has purposely forgotten about Kath.

Merle and Kath rekindle their friendship after a great deal of persuasion from Tom.
