 SANDY EDWARDS
Played by Louise Le Nay
Very much a favourite with viewers, Sandy Edwards is a confident young woman who is sentenced to murder and brought into Wentworth at the same time as Dr Kate Peterson (episode 235). Immediately from her arrival we know to expect a very interesting stay from Sandy. She's been in prison before and takes the opportunity of her arrival to fool new prison officer Janet Conway into thinking she's been sent to Wentworth instead of Barnhurst!
Sandy quickly establishes herself as top dog during Bea's illness. Bea and Sandy become good mates and work together to keep some sort of 'law and order' among the other women. For the most part it works, until Marie Winter is transferred to Wentworth from Barnhurst. At this time, Bea has been taken to hospital to undergo emergency surgery and it doesn't take long for Marie to convince Sandy into starting a riot in response to the tightened security measures which Wentworth has been forced to take by the Department (episode 246). The riot is unsuccessful, and Sandy is sent to solitary when the prison is stormed by the officers.
During her time in solitary Sandy starts an affair with officer Steve Fawkner (who during the riot was taken hostage and ordered be stripped naked, apart from his underpants to cover his modesty!). They both make the most of Sandy's time in solitary and Steve often visits the cell during the night. In the meantime, Marie has taken over as top dog in H Block. When Sandy returns she finds out that Marie has taken over the laundry racket which was set up earlier. Sandy is not best pleased about this as drugs are now being sent as payment, instead of money. Her hands tied, Sandy is forced to back down but eventually Marie goes too far and when McNally (the head of the laundry racket) finds out that someone has been lagging to the authorities he kills Sandy's husband as a warning to her. It turns out that it is actually Kate Peterson who is telling tales to the police in return for favours.
It becomes apparent to Sandy and Marie that Kate is responsible for a lot of strange happenings in Wentworth. They both decide to take care of her and Sandy has the job of killing her, with the backup of Marie. However during Sandy's meeting with Kate at the garbage bins in the prison grounds, something happens and Kate returns inside instead of Sandy. We never find out if Kate managed to overpower Sandy or if she just escaped, but she is never seen again.
Possibly the real reason for Sandy's quick departure was because the actress who played her was heavily pregnant at the time and it was becoming difficult to hide her growing bump!
