Steve FawknerSTEVE FAWKNER
Played by Wayne Jarratt

First Ep: 245
Last Ep: 316
Total Featured: 71 episodes
Close to: Meg Morris, Sandy Edwards, Wendy (Receptionist)
Current Status: Resigned, probably sailing the world

Fresh faced Steve arrives in episode 245 with the idea of earning enough money working flat out as a prison officer so he can fund the repair of his boat and a sailing trip around the world. Some obvious and overdue eye-candy for the female inmates, Steve causes a bit of a fuss when one of his first jobs is to supervise the women taking their showers.

No sooner has he arrived and he finds himself in the middle of a riot - episode 246. Steve and fellow new inmate Janet Conway are patrolling the prison when they hear the riot alarm sound. Not knowing exactly what action to take, they decide the best thing to do is hide until they can work out a plan. Steve manages to get word to the police via the telephone in the Governor's office, but the women notice the call on the switchboard and take him hostage. He is stripped down to his pants and locked in a cell.

He begins an affair with inmate Sandy Edwards, who he initially overpowers to help stop the riot but starts to make regular visits to her cell at night time (episode 250).

When Sandy disappears, Colleen Powell hears a rumour about Steve's association with her and threatens to have him sacked if she finds out he's abusing his position. He strongly denies any sexual activity with Sandy or any of the other women.

In episode 284, Steve is attending a fire in one of the cells. He tries the fire extinguisher but it doesn't work so he leaves it on the ground. The flames are getting worse and the extinguisher begins to leak. One of the sparks lands in the water and the whole thing explodes, throwing Steve back against the brick wall. The extinguisher was filled with alcohol by the women in an attempt to hide some illicit booze they had brewed. Unfortunately for Steve it almost costs him his sight but after some time off work he makes a full recovery and returns back to the prison.

Steve has an eye for the ladies and has a relationship with the prison receptionist Wendy, but she calls it off when she hears about his apparent affair with Sandy Edwards. Chrissie Latham tries to make a move on him but when he tells her he isn't interested, she tells everyone that he has raped her. Steve is about to get fired but Joan Ferguson gives him a false alibi and Steve is cleared when Chrissie admits she has made the whole thing up (episode 291) following pressure from Joan.

He doesn't stay friendly with Joan for too long and soon finds out that she's behind all of the illegal books and contraband being brought in for the women. Originally against Erica's wishes, Steve sets a trap for Joan with Meg and Colleen. She falls for the plan but when Barbara Fields reveals to Joan that she is being set up, Joan turns the tables and reports Steve, Meg and Colleen to Erica (episode 314).

Steve decides to resign from Wentworth and takes full responsibility as he can't see his fellow officers' careers ruined (episode 315).

On his final day he discovers that prison nurse Neil Murray is responsible for the recent prostitute killings and probably saves Chrissie Latham's life (episode 316).

He leaves Wentworth with a wink at the receptionist and a flash of his famous smile.
